THINK INFLUENCE
A city of ideas, creativity and
innovation
Canberra — our national capital — is young, vibrant and full of
surprises. It’s a city of ambition, innovation and potential. It has
unparalleled national monuments and attractions and world-class
facilities alongside world-renowned universities and centres of
excellence. It houses the federal parliament and our impassioned
democracy is evident in every corner of the city.
At the Canberra Convention Bureau, we are focussed on showing
the world how great our city is in the best way we know how; by
increasing the number of national and international conferences and
meetings held in the capital. To achieve this goal, we use our talents,
knowledge, networks and enthusiasm to invite organisations from
around the nation, and the world, to Australia’s “meeting place”.
We encourage great minds to join Canberra’s own remarkable
intellectual capacity to form new partnerships, exchange ideas and
culture, and advance the knowledge economy. We strive to change
perceptions and raise expectations of Canberra by showcasing the
city and leveraging success to help it reach its potential as one of the
world’s great capitals.
Canberra brings knowledge, culture and influence to any event, so it
makes sense to bring your colleagues here and promote your role, your
institution and our national capital.
The nation’s capital: the city for your next conference
By hosting a conference at your institution or at one of Canberra’s
inspiring national attractions, you put yourself, your institution and
your city at the centre of a prestigious and memorable event that
brings experts and leaders to Australia’s political and intellectual hub.
Canberra, Australia’s national capital, is where conference delegates
can be seen, be heard and be understood.
“To describe Canberra as a conference destination in just one word... perfect. I would definitely recommend Canberra to anyone who is looking to host a conference with a difference.”
Todd Redwood, Chief Executive Officer,
Australian Dental Association NSW Centre for Professional Development.
Individual and organisational
prestige
By hosting an international conference you enhance your reputation on
the world stage. It raises your academic profile before, during and well
after the conference is held. It puts you at the centre of a major event.
Hosting conferences allows more of your colleagues and students
to participate and leads to new citable publications, enhanced
reputations and higher ERA rankings. It brings world experts to your
doorstep, sparks innovation and exposes your institution’s capabilities
to an influential audience.
Hosting a conference offers powerful institutional and personal
publicity and prestige.
“Not only has each of the conferences I have organised been tremendous fun, but I’ve gained a good deal from it – conference organisation is an outreach and service activity that the universities value and I think it’s enhanced my career.”
Professor Don Byrne, Head of Department/Director,
School of Health and Psychological Sciences, ANU.
Canberra offers a number of free services that make it easier for you to
host a conference at your institution.
The Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG) includes
representatives from Canberra’s research and learning organisations
that want to see more high-level conferences in the city.
RALIG uses its networks, knowledge assets and collective weight to
attract conferences to Canberra. It promotes individual organisations’
and Canberra’s capability as a centre of excellence and knowledge
economy. This group is able to assist you with letters of support,
technical assistance, bid presentations and more.
The Canberra Convention Bureau is a not for-profit organisation with
the charter to promote Canberra as a conference and business events
destination. The service we provide is free and designed to support
and assist you as the conference host.
Canberra’s business events industry is small enough to work together,
but large enough to offer you fabulous variety and value. The Canberra
Convention Bureau can assist you with ideas and impartial advice
on which products and services can best meet your needs. We’ll
source quotes on your behalf and provide you with planning tools and
contacts that will assist you in staging your best event yet.
“I’m good at producing Olympic swimmers, but when it comes to running a conference, I needed expert help from the Canberra Convention Bureau – it’s one of the reasons we were able to achieve what we did.”
Bruce Mason, AIS — in relation his involvement in the successful bid
for Canberra to host the XII International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming in 2014.
Canberra makes it easy
Bidding for Conferences
The Canberra Convention Bureau can coordinate and produce a
custom-made bid for you to present to your organising committee
– including a business case demonstrating the benefits of selecting
Canberra for your event. We will even come with you and assist in
presenting the bid or present the bid on your behalf.
This free service assists with budgeting, letters of endorsement
from senior figures, the location of venues and accommodation, site
inspections, promotional material and more.
“The advice provided to us by the Canberra Convention Bureau was invaluable, and I am so grateful to them for assisting us to put together a conference that was both beneficial and memorable for our national and international delegates.”
Dr Madeleine Nicol, conference convenor of the 1st International Conference on Translational Medicine, and Public Affairs Officer, John
Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU.
