Overview
Woot Woot, you are off on vacation!!! Sometimes we get so caught up in packing our bags and getting
to the airport that we over look some important things that we really should do before we leave the
house.
To ensure you have a carefree vacation as well as homecoming we have compiled a list of some things
to do before leaving for vacation.
This is just an easy travel do-to list of all the things you should do at home before you leave the house
for that much-anticipated vacation.
vacation to housework.
the floors a good vacuum, get all the pet hair
and fluff off the floor, clean and change the bed
linen.
come home so you don’t have to do anything
(apart from unpacking).
or family, or arrange for a pet sitter to come
by.
these days that will look after your fur
babies for free in return for accommodation.
You will happier knowing that your pet is
well cared for.
collect your mail
mail whilst you are gone.
A mailbox busting with letters just screams
“we are not home”!!! If you can get any
newspapers or magazine subscriptions on
hold that is also a great idea!
Ensure all your bills are to date or
schedule them
whilst you are gone.
You don’t want to come home to any nasty
little late fees or even worse having utilities
switched off.
documents
tickets you may have.
send yourself an email or pop it into Dropbox
or somewhere similar that you will have
access to while you are on vacation.
If anything happen during your trip you will
have access to important numbers and a
identification of some kind.
Clean out your refrigerator
Don’t forget to add this one to your to do
list before traveling!
You don’t want to come home to off milk or
moldy left overs. So throw out any food that
will go off while you are away or give it family
and friends.
Also make a plan to use your food and drink
during the week before leaving.
Cook a meal and put it in the freezer
While you are organizing your fridge with the
step above go and make a healthy meal using the
food in your fridge, try to use whatever you can
before you toss it.
especially if the travel time is super long, and have
to cook a meal for the family or have to go
grocery shopping upon arrival.
This is something you can easily do a few days
before departure that will make your
homecoming so much easier. So prepare a meal
and put it in the deep freeze, that way once you
return from vacation dinner is already organized.
Put out your rubbish bins
You don’t want to come home to overflowing
bins so ensure you put out your rubbish bins
for collection day before you leave.
Better still if you are friendly with your
neighbors ask them to do it for you on
collection day rather than have your bins sit
out the front the entire time you are away.
It is no fun missing a trash collection day
when you have a big family, it will add up for
sure.
but you should put on your list of things to
do before going on vacation.
Save yourself some energy and money (and
avoid fire hazards) while you are away by
unplugging any appliances that don’t need to
be on while you are away (think tumble
dryer, toaster etc).
plants
plants that need attention regularly? They also
need caring while you are away.
So arrange for someone to come over and
water your gardens for you.
Clean out your Purse / Wallet
Take out all the cards that you won’t need for
your trip, the less things you have with you
the better.
vacation. If you happen to loose your purse
while you are on a trip, you won’t need to get
all those cards again.
traveling abroad
before traveling abroad.
Give your neighbor or friend a spare key
If you have a spare key hidden around the house
somewhere, put it away or give it to a friend of
neighbor.
In fact make sure that someone you trust has a
spare key to your house in case something goes
wrong and you need someone to get into your
home whilst you are traveling or heaven forbid
you lose your own key during vacation.
We ask our neighbor to check our house once a
week when we are away to see that nobody has
broken into it and nothing is out of place.
Ensure you have enough medication
If you or anyone in your family take regular
medication, ensure you have enough
medication to last your entire trip.
If you are preparing the house for extended
vacation don’t forget to get a script filled for
extra days or arrange a doctor appointment
if you need to get a new script. These things
might take a few days so don’t leave it to
the last minute!
This should be in your vacation travel
checklist because it is best that someone
knows where you are at all times, roughly
at least.
of your friends or family member will
know where you will be, or should be.
Ensure all your doors and windows are locked
Before you leave the house go around and
do a quick check that all the doors and
windows are shut and locked well from the
inside. This seems like a simple thing to do
but most people only shut the windows,
don’t really lock it (some windows have an
inside key).
house which windows are shut, and not
locked, is actually not so hard for a burglar
and we unfortunately had this happened
while we were away once.
Adjust the thermostat
adjusting the A/C or heat. The Environmental
Protection Agency recommends adjusting
in-home temperature. However, if you live in
conditions where your home could reach
triple digits and high humidity levels, adjusting
the temperature setting to 85 degrees F. This
will prevent the growth of mold and mildew
and should also preserve temperature
sensitive items such as artwork and wine.
Update friends and family
Some of us may need a vacation from our family
and friends but make sure one of them knows
your itinerary in the event of an emergency. In
addition, it’s a smart idea to download
emergency contacts in your phone. If you plan
on traveling abroad, enroll in STEP, the Smart
Traveler Enrollment Program. You’ll be updated
by the embassy in your destination country
about safety conditions such as a natural disaster,
civil unrest, or family emergency and it will help
you connect with loved ones in case of an
emergency.
appearances, but you must use them
cleverly. Scheduling lights to come on at the
same time, in the same room every night
could be a dead giveaway you aren’t home.
Consider when you would turn certain
lights on and off if you were home. For
example, set a timer to turn your porch
light on at dusk and off around bedtime.
Having your porch light on during the day is
a signal that no one is home
Spotlight intruders
himself? A glaring spotlight on intruders is a
great deterrent. Motion sensors are an essential
feature of home security, as they are often the
only thing that can detect and deter intruders. If you’re installing the sensors yourself, consider
the various locations a thief might use to enter
your home. Don’t forget places like basement
windows or the second floor and locations
where thieves will move past a sensor rather
than toward or away from it.
Before you hit the road, chances are you're so focused on not forgetting to pack your toothbrush and
making it to the airport on time, that you forget to button things down on the home front. Don't worry,
we've got you covered.
