THEWEEK@SAINTBENEDICT Dear Parents and Carers Welcome to another week at Saint Benedict. I’m sure many of you will have voted in last week’s referendum and we will certainly have some interesting times ahead given recent announcements and planned changes. On Friday morning I spoke to Year 7 students. One of the things I stressed with them was that here at Saint Benedict we are a very diverse school and many of the children who attend here come from other EU countries and further afield. I explained to them that this diversity enhances us as a school and that as a Catholic School everyone is loved and everyone is very much part of this community. The Catholic Church is a Global community and being in or out of the EU makes no difference to this position. I also explained to them that the portrayal by the media and the content of some political campaigns has focused on immigration but that many people who voted to leave the EU will not have done so on the basis of immigration. I did however add that it was important at this time that all of us, staff and students alike, are sensitive to one another; that some members of our community will be feeling anxious about the future at this time and that we should always be supportive of one another and not just tolerant but welcoming of every person, nationality and culture. As always we have had lots happening in school. On Thursday we welcomed children from our partner primary schools along with our own children from Year 7 who were involved in a poetry recital in the theatre. We had some wonderful performances from the children on everything from Roald Dahl to some of the children’s own compositions. A group of 40 of our Year 9 students enjoyed a trip to London last week to see theatre productions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Woman in Black. By all accounts they had a great time and really benefitted from the experience. Thanks to all staff who were involved with the trip. Myself and members of the Leadership team have been dropping into lessons over the past week or so, particularly to support those staff and students who are gearing up for next year’s exams (already!) The atmosphere around the school has been excellent and you’ll be pleased to know that the students have been working very hard and will be doing so right up to the end of term. On Friday night, Year 13 students enjoyed their prom and looked fabulous. It’s hard to believe where the time has gone and we gave them a really good send off. Year 11 have their prom this Friday evening at the Littleover Lodge Hotel which we are very much looking forward to. This Thursday is also Athletics Day (weather permitting). If students are competing they should wear their PE Kit. If not they should be wearing their house colours on the top half and uniform on the bottom half. You may not have heard but the National Union of Teachers have announced a strike on 5th July which is currently due to be the day where our Year 6 students join us for their Induction Day. Our priority on the day will be to keep the school open and running as normal however there may be some disruption which could result in some changes to planned activity both with the Year 6 event and the normal school day for some year groups. I will be discussing plans with senior staff and the local authority over the next few days as the action will impact across the City as it is Induction Day for all secondary schools. If we are required to make any changes we will write to you and post a message on the academy website so please look out for this. Kevin Gritton Headteacher ISSUE NO 17 27 JUNE 2016

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to another week at Saint Benedict.
