Meet Shirley Huss Shirley’s story began in Moberly, Missouri where she was born and raised. After her high school graduation, she attended college at Hannibal- LaGrange College in Missouri. In Moberly, she met her first husband, Elwyn Yeater, at church. After WWII, his Navy and later civil service career moved their family with four children to eight states before settling in Houston, Texas in 1962 with NASA. While assigned to New York City for a brief time during the early days of television, Shirley took advantage of the opportunity. She dressed the four children up and put them in a little red wagon to tour the television stations. Several times the producers would put her and the children on television. Her interest in TV continued when the family lived in Washington, DC. Shirley applied for and got a part in a television “Makeover Show” – one of the first of its kind. After getting the children off to school, she went to the studio and was back before they returned. During this time she had challenges. Her son got polio, and her youngest daughter had a serious illness. But through it all she was able to manage. After her youngest child went to college, Shirley took some college refresher courses and began her own career at NASA. A highlight of her 20 years at NASA was being the Executive Assistant to Deke Slayton, one of the original astronauts. at is a time in her life she looks back on with great pride. She worked on Apollo 11 and 13 and numerous other NASA space missions. Shirley met her second husband, Carl Huss, at NASA, where he was an aeronautical engineer. Carl welcomed her four children into his life. He and Shirley were married 21 years before he passed away from a heart condition. ey did a great deal of volunteer work at their church and in the community. Carl was the US representative to the International Space Committee, which caused them to travel extensively. ey enjoyed travelling – visiting all 50 states and continents except Antarctica. How did Shirley get to Franklin, Tennessee? She wanted to be central to where the majority of her family resided. Her daughter and her husband had started a music recording business called Star Song Records in Houston, which they relocated to Nashville. Within a few years another daughter and later her son moved to Franklin – so it was a good choice. Now with ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and “one on the way”, she enjoys the time with her family, whether on the phone or in person. Shirley is glad to be here at the Fountains of Franklin. She loves the décor, colors and especially her beautiful sunroom. She speaks highly of the other residents and feels the employees are very kind and helpful. Meet Sandra Yvonne DobbinsSandra had been working the last ten years at NHC in Franklin and felt it was time for a change. She wanted new faces, and a different atmosphere. Her future career choice was the Fountains of Franklin. Her dream is to keep working in Assisted Living because she loves it and feels that God has chosen her to be in the residents’ lives. It really shows with her spunky and upbeat attitude. When Sandra isn’t at the Fountains, she enjoys shopping, working out at the gym and being with her family in Columbia, Tennessee. Having three children and two grandchildren, she feels very blessed. Sandra believes that her career plan is all about being with people, and she loves being a Resident Assistant at the Fountains of Franklin. We are fortunate to have Sandra, and her many positive attributes are valued.
