Thursday, April 10, 2014 Arts & Entertainment The New Paltz Oracle 11B oracle.newpaltz.edu MUSICIAN OF THE WEEK: SARA SHAMEEM YEAR: Second MAJOR: Public Relations HOMETOWN: Nanuet, N.Y. WHAT’S YOUR INSTRUMENT OF CHOICE AND WHY? My voice. I figured out I could sing when I was in fifth grade. Whenever I sing, it makes me feel confident. I’m also trying to learn the ukulele. I’m in The Sexy Pitches and I was in “Urinetown” with The Miami Theatre Players. I’m also in vocal chamber jazz ensemble. WHAT ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH MUSICALLY? WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES? Joss Stone, Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé. WHO HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO LATELY? Allen Stone, Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN FOR THE FUTURE? I’d like to work in an art-based Public Rela- tions firm and I’d like to keep singing either professionally or on the side. Just remember that the reason you work on music is because you love it and it makes you happy. Don’t ever lose sight of that, otherwise it’s going to be considered work and music should never be work. ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING MUSICIANS? Opening Reception: Friday, April 25 KELLY NOVAK Relations DANIELLE STERNBERG Autism: A Constant Companion Fourth-year BFA photography Medium: 35 mm film printed chemically/shot and printed digitally I observe and document the everyday inter- action of families. I draw a comparison of family dynamics among the families photo- graphed, depicting those dynamics primarily through the use of space within a household and the direction and intent of gaze. I would like viewers to allow this sampling of family dynamics to inspire reflection on their own definition of family. Fourth-year BFA painting Medium: oil paint, ink, oil pastels I offer a visual interpretation of how I make sense of the world. As an individual with Asperger’s Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hy- peractivity Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I experience difficulty processing signals from my environment. To symbolize the resulting feeling of alienation, I have created two humanoid figures. I intend to leave the viewer with an understanding of the lived experience of an individual with atypical neurology. T
