Our maid, Jane, woke me at 3.00 this morning. The weather was very hot and dry and a strong wind was blowing from the west. I looked out

of the widow and could see the glow of a fire in the distance. It

looked far away so I went back to bed. Click here

The people of the city panicked! They fled leaving everything they

owned behind . Rich people escaped across the river in hired boats but most people just ran as

the fire raced across the city destroying everything in its path.

On Tuesday the fire was still raging out of control. There was nothing we

could do but watch and wait. The King ordered guards to patrol the

streets because looters were rummaging through the smoking houses looking for treasure left

behind or hidden. Click here

On Wednesday the wind started to die down, by Thursday evening the worst was over. The smell was terrible with the sky shrouded in a grey blanket of

smoke. Some of our greatest buildings had been consumed by the flames

including St Paul’s Cathedral. Click here

And so it is over! The city lies in ruins. Now, there is much work to be done. The King has vowed

that the city will be rebuilt bigger and better than before. Sir Christopher Wren has been asked to design the new London and make it the greatest city in the World. But who will build this new city,

where will we get the craftsmen, builders and workers from? Click here
