The Roman Invasion of Britain (43420 A.D.) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bb/Roman_Empire_125.png Although Julius Caesar had visited Britain in 55BC and reported that the soil was good, there was plenty of food and people that could be used as slaves, the Romans did not have a large enough army to invade and conquer Britain. It was 43 AD before the Romans, under the Emperor Claudius, were ready to conquer Britain—initially about 20,000 troops. Roman invaders introduced new developments in agriculture, urbanization, industry and architecture—even plumbing!

 HADRIAN!!!

(Emperor) Hadrian's Wall, completed in 128 A.D., was 73 miles long, and its width and height measured about 10 feet wide and 16-20 feet high. Other parts were made from turf and measured 20 feet wide and 12 feet high.

Around the year 197, Rome divided Britannia into two provinces, Britannia Superior and Britannia Inferior; sometime after 305, Britannia was further divided, and made into an imperial diocese (a kind of administrative subdivision). For much of the later period of the Roman occupation, Britannia was subject to barbarian invasions (Irish from the west, Saxons from the east, Scots from the north) and often came under the control of imperial usurpers and pretenders to the Roman Emperorship. Most Romans departed from Britain around the year 410. Romans went to public baths to: keep clean, take exercise and chill (or heat) with their buds. First, they exercised; second, they went into a steam room; third, they soaked in a hot room; fourth, they relaxed in a warm room; lastly, they jumped into a cold pool.

The Romans did not have soap, but used olive oil instead. They would recline on a marble slab in the warm room while a slave rubbed it into their skin. They then used a metal strigil to scrape off dirt, sweat, and oil.

The Romans built large bath houses over hot springs so they could swim in the “healing” water which came up from the ground.
