Seebeck Effect – Brief Background
In 1821 Thomas Johann Seebeck noticedthe deflection of the needle of a magnetwhen dissimilar metals were connectedand exposed to a temperature gradient.The deflection was caused by an inducedvoltage and resulting electric current.
This is the opposite of what Peltierobserved in 1834, when he applied acurrent across a junction of dissimilarelectrically conductive materials andfound the presence of heating and coolingat the juction.
These phenomena are respectively calledthe Seebeck effect and the Peltier effect.The conversion of temperature differenceto electric current and vice-versa is termedthermoelectric effect.

Thermoelectric technology
Moreover the Seebeck effect is used in energy production fromtemperature difference. The state of the art of this technologyis recently improving thanks to the interest raised in the field ofsustainable energies. Even if the common efficiency in energyproduction is not high enough to be considered a majortechnology in the power generation field, a large interest iscreated by its waste heat recovery potential. Furthermore, thechoice of the materials used can make the process moreefficient, maximizing the Seebeck effect. Other significant fieldsof application are related to systems where low powers arerequired, but a strong reliability of the power generatorrepresents a crucial-point.
The Seebeck effect is due to the fact thatwhen two conductors or semiconductors areconnected and one junction is heated and theother one is cooled, the temperaturedifference induces an electron/holes flow.If the pair are connected through an electricalcircuit, direct current flows through thatcircuit.
The electric potential difference generated bythe Seebeck effect is in the range of fewmicro-volts per kelvin of temperaturedifference. The Seebeck Effect has beenextensively used by thermocouple to measurethe temperature. Using a mathematicalrelationship that links potential differencegenerated to temperature difference it ispossible to measure the temperature in aprecise way.

Some Applications
The new technology can be applied to thethermal recovery of each system that has aconstant production of heat over 220 ° C, suchas solar energy or from the fumes ofcombustion processes at high temperatures. Itproduces electricity from the heat, with thegreatest possible efficiency.
Moreover, it has no mechanical moving parts,requires no maintenance and does not requireany supply of fossil fuels, solid, liquid orgaseous.
Applications, therefore, are limitless:
