• Only a narrow strip of land separates the Andes from the Pacific Ocean. This the Atacama Desert which is very dry, and supports few life forms.

Page 4: There were probably 25 to 100 million indigenous people before Columbus. Aztecs in central Mexico

• Every major city in Latin America has large numbers of extremely poor people, small numbers of very wealthy people, and an infrastructure that is hard pressed to meet the demands of its growing population.

• Most Latin Americans value leisure more than work. Latin Americans have a different concept of time. They do not feel pressured to do things on a schedule. They are often late for meetings and put things off until the next day. They do not believe life should be run by a clock, but life is to be enjoyed.

Pampas• The pampas are also well known as fields. They are

open areas covered by grass that are located in the south of Brazil, and in other countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, etc.

• The climate is subtropical, with warm temperatures, and constant rains during most of the year

• The soil in general is good and is used for agriculture.. The vegetation is mostly grass which the cattle eat.

• The main economic activity, however, is the cattle raising. The best cattle herds in Brazil are found in the Pampas. Brazil exports beef.

The Llanos• The Llanos are similar to the Pampas except

they are located in the northern part of South America. The region is flat and like the Pampas, grass grows there.

Squatter Settlements are found outside the large cities in Latin America. People move to the cities to find work.
