The Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton (CAFH) believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and abuse. By providing opportunities for children and youth to attend a variety of nurturing and motivating programs, leading to bursaries for post-secondary education, the Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton is offering the tools for children and youth in need to overcome their challenges, realize their dreams and become successful members of this community.

Your support not only ensures the continuation of these programs, it brings hope to children and youth for a bright and happy future.

Funds provided by CAFH are used for post-secondary education, after school recreational programs, summer camp, assisting youth in the transition to adulthood independent of the Halton CAS, providing homes for teens in transition and offering opportunities for children to experience typical childhood joys that enable young people to thrive.

Welcome from the PresidentDear Family & Friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton, I would like to welcome you to our Stardust Over the Rainbow Gala - ‘There’s no place like home’. This year celebrates our 18th annual Gala. Each year we look forward to reconnecting with so many of our wonderful supporters, some who have been attending our Gala since the beginning and for some this is their first, and we truly hope not your last.

The Foundation has been successfully raising funds for our children and youth in care and in our community for over 27 years. The funds we raise enrich and change lives by sending kids to camp, providing after school programs, bursaries for post-secondary education and providing support for homeless youth. The support you provide is essential in the lives of children and youth in need today, and helps provide them with a brighter tomorrow. It is your support and the support of those in our community that has helped us be successful.

To date the CAFH has been able to direct almost $5 million towards our charitable purpose. The proceeds from tonight’s Gala will contribute to the Foundation's commitment to raise $1.2 million by year end.

This event could not happen without the leadership of our Gala Committee Co-Chairs, Jodi Younger & Elizabeth Law, our Executive Director, Tina Blatchford, our volunteer committee, members of our Board of Directors, and of course our exceptional group of volunteers.

Enjoy all that tonight has to offer, amazing entertainment, fantastic food, silent and live auctions, lots of laughs and a few tears. Tonight you played a part in helping to improve the lives of our children and youth in need – ‘You’re the One.’

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone involved in making tonight’s Stardust Over the Rainbow Gala a great success!

Firstly thanks to our sponsors and donors who provide us with the means to coordinate a successful fundraiser, boosting the vital funds provided to the children and youth we support. Next our event volunteers and Gala committee who execute an amazing plan, creating a wonderful, fun and memorable experience for everyone in the room, your dedication is amazing. To our generous guests who bid high or spend lavishly, thank you, you’re the icing on the cake or possibly the ruby slippers, that enable us to reach our targets and truly make a difference in Halton.

Of course, last but definitely not least, a shout out to the young people who are involved in entertaining us at this year’s event, they have my utmost admiration. In sharing their talents with you we hope you will see just a snippet of the gifts they possess; the skills they are waiting to explore, refine and unleash on the world.

Together this is what we are creating, the opportunity to realize dreams – a true gift!

Thank you for believing in the work we do.

Sincerely,#TheirFutureInYourHand

On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of the Halton Children’s Aid Society, we welcome and thank you for attending the 2017 Stardust Over the Rainbow Gala—There’s No Place Like Home.

For every child, youth and family who receive our services, the theme There’s No Place Like Home resonates in their hearts. One of our main outcomes for children and youth is permanency. Every child and youth wants to go home, hoping things will improve. That is why we work hard to keep families together; thereby, providing services such as parental support, behaviour management training and admission prevention dollars. This intervention works as the majority of our children and youth (96%) remain at home or return home just as Dorothy did.

When remaining at home is not an option, we find forever homes through adoption, guardianship and kinship. Dorothy lived in a forever home with her Auntie Em and Uncle Henry and she was anxious to return to them. So it is with our youth who are transitioning into adulthood and leaving our care. In their hearts, they want to return home. If this cannot happen, we promote lifelong connections.

Tonight we celebrate our children and youth’s courage, intelligence, confidence and resilience. Your generosity provides opportunities to develop their strengths by supporting their education, talent development and finding that forever home—making lifelong connections.

Our children and youth thank you for your compassion, your understanding of what home and heart means and for helping them along the way as they follow their own journey on the yellow brick road.

Tonight we are delighted to present the ArtHouse Chorus of Voices to sing O Canada. Music, mime and movement classes are offered to students in grades 2-5 through the ArtHouse Chorus of Voices program. Under the direction of Sarah Zbogar, children learn life skills such as voice projection and public speaking through acting and singing in an affirming and joyous environment. This past month, the ArtHouse Chorus had the pleasure of learning an 800-year-old Spanish song which they performed with world-renowned piper Carlos Nunez and his band from Spain at a recent ArtHouse Gala. Tonight, they are very excited to be sharing a little piece of the Wizard of Oz musical which has been the focus of their study this term. ArtHouse levels the artistic playing field by providing accessible and innovative cost-free arts programs led by professional instructors for children and youth aged 7-17.

Child and Youth in Care Day in Ontario is on May 14, 2017.

In late March 2014, the Honourable David Onley, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario granted royal assent to Bill 53, an Act to Proclaim Children and Youth in Care Day. This Act recognizes May 14th of each year as Children and Youth in Care Day, acknowledging the enormous contributions current and former Crown and Society wards make, as well as the strength, bravery and resilience they show in the face of adversity.

Youth in and from care play an increasingly important role in influencing Child Welfare and how it works. They are involved in eer support and igve advice to their Children’s Aid Societies (CAS) on projects and programs to improve the lives of all children and youth in CAS care. More and more they are also helping to change provincial policies and even laws.

In November 2011, youth in and from care shared their experiences and stories growing up as Crown wards of the province during the Youth Leaving Care Hearings at Queen’s Park. The Hearings were the first of their kind in Canada and examined the challengegs that Crown wards face when they begin to age out of care at 18.

The final report of the hearings, My REAL Life Book, identified the difficulties these young people experience growing up in care including vulnerability, isolation, unpredicatability and aging out of care before they are ready. Written with the input of youth in and from care, the report called for fundamental change to better support youth as they transition form care. In fact, the creation of Children and Youth in Care Day was one of the key recommendations provided in the report. Since the Youth Leaving Care Hearings and the My REAL Life Book, youth have influenced change related to financial support, post-secondary options and extending services to older youth and young adults. They scored an important win in 2014 with the Aftercare Benefits Initiative, offering benefits to youth aged 21 to 25 who don’t have care through another plan.

Join us in celebrating our youth in and from care on this special day.

#TheirFutureInYourHand

Meet Sarah.*

Sarah is a tremendous young lady who the CAFH was able to support through the bursary program which is funded by your donations. Sarah recently graduated from Mohawk College. Sarah wrote to the CAFH: “Hi everyone, I just wanted to send a note to the Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton and everyone that supports the work of the Halton CAS. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to have completed my Educational Assistant diploma at Mohawk College. This has been a dream come true for me! I’ve completed many placements in various schools where I was actually given the opportunity to share a draft of my ideal curriculum which is aimed at making the classroom an inclusive and welcoming learning environment for all children. I can’t wait to be fully employed and begin my career working with children.

I was also very fortunate to be hired at the CAS summer camp as a “senior leader” during my summer break from Mohawk. It was a tremendous experience, working with children who have experienced some pretty exceptional circumstances yet, just want to be kids. We had a great summer and I learned so much working alongside some wonderful role models who do such great work with “our kids”.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has supported the Foundation by making donations or contributing to CAS in some way by supporting the work they do.

My dream for the future is to make one small difference at a time. I want to make sure that all children have the chance to attend school and get an education so that they are able to find their own special gift. Thank you for helping me get closer to my dream.” — Sarah

Dream CanvasThe DREAM canvas was inspired and created by Crown Wards from the Dufferin/Halton/Peel Crown Ward Education Championship Team (CWECT) to encourage other youth to never give up on their dreams, their hopes and their goals for who they want to be and what they want to achieve for their future. The canvas symbolizes the creativity, talent and beautiful dreams of a bright future that all our youth possess. It is a physical representation of the youth voice and an expression of hope, strength, determination and resiliency. It embodies a statement of courage for youth to pursue their dreams in the midst of every obstacle they face and is a call to youth to seek the help they need from caring adults who will guide and support them on their journey. It represents the diversity and freedom of expression for all youth in care.

Individual copies of the DREAM canvas poster are available for purchase tonight for $30 at Auntie Em’s Cottage.
