What is a theme, and what should it accomplish?

• Place for interactions– Seed for project ideas, grant applications– Synthesis, reviews– More..? We decide!

• Minimum requirements – Keep track of research frontiers!– Develop theme research plan

Page 8: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

It is not…

• …A department or any ordinary organizational entity– It’s a network

• …A funding instance for projects– Limited budget– Facilitate, support and fund start-up activities,

grant applications, syntheses papers, more..

Page 9: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Theme leaders

• Facilitate and coordinate activities

• Stimulate members’ engagements

• Link to other theme leaders and SRC management (when needed)

• Book keeping & reports

• Decide on priorities (if needed)

Page 10: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Theme work principles

• Engage as much as you want and can

• “Nothing in → nothing out”

• Theme helps to initiate projects/collaborations– Then carried out in parallel to other theme

activities

Page 11: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Funds (200,000 SEK/year)

• Distributed through an “innovation fund”

• Everyone can apply – 1 page principle

• Theme leaders decide on approval – with help of theme members and SRC management

• More about this on the last slide

Evening

• Dinner 18:30 at Haga Restaurang & Delikatesser (Hagagatan 18)

• Bowling at Svea bowling (Sveavägen 118) 20:40

• Sign up during the day– Choose among 3 dishes (meat, fish,

vegetarian)

Define ourselves

• John Forrester!

Page 14: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Discuss research areas and topics

• Open discussion– What is interesting?– Knowledge gaps?– What has potentials?– Add more questions– Move around questions?– More…

Page 15: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Summary day 1

• Research areas/questions suggested

• Initiated discussions

• Some theme basics

Page 16: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Goals for day 2

• Continue discussions!

• Find synergies & common interests

• “Seed” ideas for papers/projects/etc– Easier to do that today than later

• If possible, start to concretize ideas

Page 17: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Agenda day 2

• Yesterdays groups – main points

• Present ourselves (max 2 min) – put in context

• Rotating groups – come up with ideas (1 page/idea)

• Work with those ideas – make them concrete

Page 18: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

How to research our areas and topics?

• Project ideas

• Syntheses/reviews

• More?

Page 19: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

Concretisation!

• Choose task(s)

• Develop the ideas, make them concrete

• Write brief outline

Page 20: Theme Workshop 19-20 Feb 2008 knowledge, networks and natural resource management.

How should the theme operate?

• Projects – in parallel

• Communication/keep track of frontiers– How to organize ourselves?– Meetings (global/local/regional/IRL/virtual)?– Roles?– Invitations/guest lectures?– More?
