MIDI Concepts

MIDI is an acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface

MIDI is a set of agreed protocols and device connectivity standards established in 1983

Provides for a common interconnection of music equipment and other devices

Provides the framework for real-time capture and playback of musical data

MIDI devices transmit and receive messages that each device will interpret and respond to accordingly based on the MIDI protocol

MIDI Architecture

The MIDI architecture consists of channels, messages and program numbers mapped to ‘voices’

A voice is a sound featured in a sound module MIDI can be considered to have three distinct layers The device layer - hardware, cables, foot switches The communication layer - channels and messages The music layer - actual voices and sound quality of the

voices produced by hardware and software tone generators

The music layer is ‘what your hear’

MIDI Messages

MIDI messages transmitted on channels 1..16 MIDI can thus communicate with 16 devices Devices could include keyboard, sound module drum machine,

and DAW Channel 10 reserved as the drum channel MIDI can play several sounds ‘voices’ on a sound module where

the sound module is multi-timbral - able to play more than one sound simultaneously - each voice would be mapped to a particular MIDI channel

treble for an 88 note keyboard) where 60 = middle c Sharp or flat Velocity Pedal and foot switch information

General (GM) MIDI

An agreed set of protocols manufactures must implement The mapping of program numbers to voices (patches) Establishes 128 (0..127) mappings between program

number and voice type,e.g. program 0 = acoustic piano

The GM percussion map implements a standard drum kit mapped to keys ranging from B0 through to A4
