Family Recipe Corner

Maryland Crab CakesSubmitted by Pat Young’s family

2 lbs crab meat, preferably jumbo lump (sift through the meat to ensure all shells have been removed)3 slices of bread, crusts removed and torn into small pieces3 tablespoons mayonnaise¼ teaspoon dry mustard½ teaspoon of saltDash of paprika2 eggs1 tablespoon minced parsley

Mix together all ingredients (except eggs). Crack the 2 eggs over the top and lightly mix together. Form into patties and brown in a hot skillet brushed with olive oil and butter. Makes about 10-12 crab cakes.

Penny Press DayOn September 3, 1833, Benjamin Day began printing his daily newspaper The Sun in New York City, for which he charged one penny per copy. For this reason, September 3 is celebrated as Penny Press Day. Day’s small paper was groundbreaking for many reasons. First, it brought the news to the masses. Working-class families and immigrants could at last afford to be well informed. Secondly, it relied on advertising, not subscriptions, for revenue, which helped keep its cost so low. The invention of the steam engine also aided Day’s cause. In 1840, he could print 4,000 copies an hour; by 1851, he was printing 18,000. Day was also the first newspaperman to hire reporters to follow stories. Thanks to his ingenuity, Day became New York’s first great newspaper magnate.

New Faces and New Places.........

Jamie Bell our Activities Director has added responsibilities and is taking over guest services for our community. She will still be involved in the activities department as the director but she will be applying her skills in communications at the reception area, she will be working closely with Kelly and Louise in marketing. We would like to congratulate her on her added achievements.

Casey Owens is the Activity Assistant and does the activities in the DayBreak building. Casey is a certified activity aide and has been in the health care field for over 9 years. A Virginia native with one son. Casey is creative and we look forward to seeing her ideas at work!

Clarissa “Claire” Buggs has 10 years of experience in elder care. Claire is a Virginia native with one child. Claire is furthering her education in hopes of becoming an RN. Claire brings humor and love to everything she does and we look forward to sharing a laugh with her.
