LISTENING TO THE VOICES THAT ECHO

2014- Where did it go?As we look back over 2014, we are aware of so many examples in our parish communities of people living out our Deanery theme for this year being “Voices that echo the Glory of God through Prayer and Service”.

Our deanery program this year has included the continuation of revisiting the themes and documents of Vatican 2, with presentations from,

Fr Frank O’Loughlan on the topics of liturgy, Denise Lacey on Family and Dennis Fitzgerald on Social Justice. Our very well supported dinners this year at St John’s (Secondary College) Graduates Restaurant have listened to the voices of Fr Tony Feeney, speaking of his experiences of prayer and service in his years of priesthood and to Sr Columba on her service.

We had the opportunity for a retreat with Deacon Sang Ho (now Father Sang Ho) on the theme of Eucharist. Our Priests have continued to gather each Friday for lunch and our parish secretaries have shared breakfast meetings on several occasions. Our deanery council representatives and the executive have met to plan our activities. We have shared our parish activities through our deanery newsletters. We continue to operate and support the Cyrene Centre, offering a free service to those families effected by addiction.

Sadly, our major event, the conference with Anthony Gittens had to be cancelled due to unexpected circumstances which cut his time in Australia short. We are hopeful that we will be able to negotiate a return visit with him in 2015 as the interest that we received in our conference was very positive.

We thank our parishioners, priests and parish staff, the Archdiocese, and all those who have contributed to the deanery for their support over 2014.

May the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child bring peace, joy, blessing and hope to you, your family and your community this coming season.

We are aware of several new appointments which are of interest to our communities. We congratulate our newly appointed Bishops to the Melbourne Archdiocese in Terry Curtain and Mark Edwards. Both

of our new Bishops have strong ties to our deanery communities. Terry Curtain served as assistant priest at St Anthony’s, Noble Park from 1971-1974 and has now been appointed as Bishop to the northern zone. Mark Edwards is from the Oblate Order and has previously served in many of our parishes as a support priest. Many would know Mark as the priest who came to say Mass who memorised the Gospel! Mark has been appointed as Bishop of the Eastern zone. We congratulate and ask for God’s blessing upon these shepherds of the church.

We farewell Fr Michael Twigg as Principal of Mazenod College. Michael has been a good friend and leader to many in the college and parishes. Michael takes up an appointment in Brisbane. We will be welcoming as newly appointed Principal of Mazenod College Father Christian Feeney. We wish them both every success in their new appointments.

St Anthony’s and Resurrection communities have said farewell to Father Longinus Onyechesi who is taking up a part time assistant priest appointment at Heidelberg as well as part time studies in psychology. We wish him well. Replacing him will be newly ordained Father Sang Ho and we welcome him to our Deanery.

On Tuesday 21st of October at St Paul Apostle Parish, 28 people gathered to “continue the conversation” started earlier in the year in March regarding women’s issues, gender equity and their thoughts on what inspires change in This led to the October forum on the subject of Gender Equity: Inspiring Change organized by the parish Justice Peace Integrity in Creation (JPIC) group.

Three speakers spoke inspiringly about issues from varying perspectives: Karen Delvin (Managing Director, Bridges – an organization aimed at business and professional women) on the importance of inclusive decision making and the recognition of a collaborative approach between men and women around gender equity. Mark Rolfe (Husband, Father, Assistant Deputy Principal at a Regional Boys College) focused on five areas of challenge where changes should impact current and future attitudes on gender equity: familial structure, social change-addressing serious issues such as domestic violence, workplace challenges and leadership. Finally, Kumari Middleton (Co-founder Mayibuye, an organization focused on empowering young people through performing arts and life skills), gave a truly inspirational presentation from her international and local experiences and showed how resilience, determination and empathy with women have been a driver for her to change social norms.

Participants were encouraged to reflect on these presentations in small groups and discuss their learnings, challenges, opportunities and actions in the light of their own experiences. Our very able moderator Anne Astin then gathered all the threads of this conversation to challenge us to look beyond to personal, local and national opportunities for change. A more extensive report on the evening can be found on the St. Paul Apostle website www.stpaulapostle.com.au.

A traditional and authentic Nativity Scene has become very popular over the years. The creator and artist Wilson Fernandez has been building and creating the nativity scenes to capture the wonder and essence of Christmas and the birth place of baby Jesus for several years. It was Fr. Tad Ziolkowski, Parish priest who initiated and encouraged Wilson to do the nativity scene at the church. The display opens to public from 01-Dec-14 to 11-Jan-15. Open for viewing at all W/E masses or weekdays at 9.00 am.

Obituary- Father Leo Saleeba 4 August 1931 - 2 July 2011

Family, friends and colleagues gathered at Resurrection Church on Tuesday 19 July to celebrate a Memorial Mass offered by Father Brian Collins for Father Leo Saleeba who passed away on 2 July 2011. Father Leo was buried in a private service shortly following his death. Father Leo served the Resurrection Catholic Parish Community at Keysborough as Parish Priest for 15 years from 1984 to 1999. Father Leo also faithfully served the Melbourne Catholic Church in the parishes of Geelong, Dandenong, Collingwood, Wattle Park, Moorabbin, Bulleen, Bennettswood, Elwood, Kensington and East Geelong. Throughout his ministry at Resurrection, Father Leo was actively involved in many community groups and activities. He was a great supporter of the Interfaith Network, Rotary and other local

sporting clubs and organisations. He had a great love of the North Melbourne (Kangaroos) football Club as well as The Melbourne Storm and was a member of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. At his Memorial Mass, Vicki Russell, Pastoral Associate of Resurrection Parish, invited various family members and colleagues to place symbols of Father Leo’s faith life and community involvements on a memorial table. Several tributes were expressed by regional Bishop Peter Elliot, Monsignor Peter Jeffrey and by Father Leo’s niece, Justine, who represented Father Leo’s family. Father Leo was remembered as particularly serving those who were struggling with life. He had a strong commitment to social justice issues. Father Leo was a man with strong convictions and many recalled having long debates with him as they shared differing points of view. Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong, Roz Blades, who attended the service, remembered Father Leo fondly as someone who was very committed to the wider community and who was very encouraging of her as she entered into local government. Father Leo was honoured as a man dedicated to his priesthood and for his love and service of God. May he Rest in Peace. Vicki Russell

St. Johns College Class of “75” 40 Year Reunion

A Vista In Scripture

The recent church building projects in our deanery began with the development of St Kevin’s Hampton Park worshipping space. Parishioners are now enjoying the fruits of the labours of many as they gather in their Parish Church. Once settled, the building baton was then handed over to Resurrection in Keysborough for the building of a new church.Resurrection parishioners have been very excited watching the development of the new Church building. They have been active and generous in the fundraising and donor initiatives to make their dream a reality. From the turning of the soil on January 19 (which the mass going community all participated in) to now the final stages, we are looking forward with great anticipation to celebrating our Masses from mid December. The “official’ dedication ceremonies will be held in the Easter season 2015, the season when Resurrection celebrate their feast time. And finally, the baton is handed to St Joseph’s Springvale for the major building project which will see the development of their new place of worship. In times when many communities are experiencing dwindling numbers of church attendance, it is very encouraging to see that these parishes in our deanery are experiencing the growth and the subsequent need to accommodate our worshipping communities.

Passing on the church building baton!......
