TheBuzz Welcome Graduates! JANUARY 2012 WVSU ALUMNI & FRIENDS E-NEWSLETTER Congratulations and best wishes go out to the newest 165 Alums of West Virginia State University! Commencement was held on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the Civic Center in Charleston, WV. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Orlando F. McMeans, Dean and Director of the Gus R. Douglass Land-Grant Institute and Special Assistant to the President for Research and Public Service. He began his remarks with advice from his mother - the 3 “Bs” - Be Clear, Be Concise, and Be Seated. He went on the remind the students of WVSU’s land-grant history and the importance of that status. The December 2011 commencement student response was delivered by Russell P. McDonald, II, a Communications major from Indianapolis who was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. At 28, [WVSU Alumnus] Ric Cavender serves as a mayor of sorts for the venerable and increasingly vibrant East End. He’s executive director of East End Main Street, a nonprofit organization devoted to rejuvenating one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods.

vice president-branch manager of the Winfield office.

Fowler has 12 years of experience in retail banking. He has a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State University and an MBA from the University of Charleston.
