Aggie helps sustain agriculture in Africa

On August 2, after months of studying Swahili and learning variations of for-eign culture, one former A&M student will embark on a nine month journey across the Atlantic Ocean, to a remote location in eastern Africa to help sustain-able agricultural and income security.

Wilson Alarcon, who graduated in the spring with a bachelor’s in agricul-tural economics, said he has had his fair share of hardships.

Born in Torrance, California, at six years old his family moved to the re-mote mountain tops of Nayarit, Mexico off the pacific coast. During this time, he lived without a local grocery store where electricity or running water be off for days.

After nine years of living in this rural environment, his family — in search of a more stable environment — moved back to the United States and settled in their current San Antonio residence where Alarcon graduated from Tor-rance High.

Texas Hall of Fame names Blair to ballot

Just months after bringing A&M women’s hoops its first na-tional title, head coach Gary Blair was announced to the final ballot of nominees for induction to the Texas Hall of Fame by the Selec-tion Committee.

Blair is the winningest coach in A&M’s history, guiding A&M to a school-record six-straight trips to the “big dance” and finishing the historic 2010-11 season with a school-record 33 wins en route to the first No. 1 ranking in school his-tory. His nomination comes in his eighth season as head coach of the Aggies, in which he led A&M to the

Adrian O’Hanlon III The Battalion

sports

national title after the program’s first trip to the Final Four.

Blair is known for his friendly demeanor and southern hospitality off the court but his rugged coach-ing style has earned him an overall record of 596-242, a win percentage of .711. These rank him in the top 20 in career victories and the top 30 in winning percentage among cur-rent head coaches in women’s colle-giate basketball. His ability to win has made him one of only three coaches in Division I women’s hoops to take at least two different teams to the NCAA Women’s Final Four.

The Class of 2011 will be an-nounced in September with ceremo-nies taking place in early 2012 to en-shrine the class in Waco.

texasStudent imposter gets jail timeODESSA — The man who posed as a teenager to play high school basketball in West Texas has been sentenced to three years in prison after reaching a plea deal. Prosecutors said Wednesday that 23-year-old Guerdwich Montimere pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and three counts of tampering with government records. Montimere, whose trial was to begin next week in Odessa, had faced up to 20 years in prison. The naturalized U.S. citizen from Haiti came to Odessa as a ninth-grader. Playing as 15-year-old Jerry Joseph, Montimere was 21 when he played one season at Odessa Permian High and helped lead the Panthers to the state playoffs. Suspicions were raised after coaches at a basketball tournament said they recognized Joseph as Montimere, a 2007 graduate of a Florida high school.

Stars raise funds for Texas orphansHOUSTON — Celebrities including Justin Bieber, Ellen DeGeneres and Britney Spears are spreading the word about a campaign to help three Houston children seriously injured and orphaned by a deadly car accident earlier this month. Bieber and other celebrities encouraged their fans via Twitter and Facebook on Wednesday to donate to the “Show Your Hearts” campaign. The money raised from the campaign, which began Wednesday, will go to a trust fund set up to care for the children. The July 2 accident in West Texas killed the children’s parents and paralyzed 8-year-old Aaron and 9-year-old Peter, who are now being treated in Chicago. Their 6-year-old sister was also injured. The Houston Rockets on Wednesday also announced a campaign to raise money for the children.

nation&worldCourt rules on online bullying suspensionRICHMOND, Va. — A federal appeals court has backed a West Virginia school’s decision to suspend a high school senior grader for creating a web page ridiculing another student. A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond refused Wednesday to reinstate a lawsuit by Kara Kowalski. She claimed her fi ve-day suspension from Musselman High School in 2005 violated her free speech and due process rights. Kowalski created a MySpace page called “S.A.S.H.”. She claimed it was an acronym for “Students Against Sluts Herpes.” But a classmate said it stood for “Students Against Shay’s Herpes” and referred to a student who was the main subject of discussion on the page. The appeals court said Berkeley County school offi cials had authority to discipline Kowalski for online bullying.

Alarcon said he is thankful he experienced those struggles because he can relate to mil-lions of people throughout the globe living below the poverty line. The idea is this will help him assimilate into the diverse African population when he travels to Tanzania to help the community’s sustainable agricultural development through the Washington D.C. non-profit organization, 2Seeds Network.

“It’s going to be scary, but they do have running water out of a pipe, electricity and cell phones, so it’s not going to be as remote as I originally thought,” Alarcon said. “I’ve never been to Africa so this is going to be a new experience and the more I look into Tanzania, the more excited I am. It’s a really beautiful country and the people are famous for being hospitable and welcoming to foreigners.”

Currently in it’s second year running, 2Seeds Network is an organization that ca-ters to a “young generation” of postgraduate students seeking to help small communities throughout Tanzania with sustainable agri-cultural development and income security. If accepted into the network, these students will be assigned teams and placed in various loca-tions throughout Tanzania to oversee projects.

Alarcon will be a project coordinator for the Lutindi project, located in the eastern hills of Tanzania. He will be working along-side a recent graduate student from USC Berkeley, Megan Burton, on the nine-monthresearch stint.

Sam Bonsey, director of project develop-ment and co-founder for 2Seeds said that, this year there are approximately nine “unique” programs operating out of Tanzania -- Mago-ma, Bombomajimoto, Kijungumoto, Kwaki-liga, Tabora, Lutindi, Bungu, kariakoo, Ko-rogwe — and are all different in response to the needs of each individual area.

“Our teams work independently to assess the needs of the communities they live in, identify resources available, and develop their own local partnerships, and then identify their own local partners with whom to build proj-ects,” Bonsey said.

Alarcon heard about the network during his senior year through assistant professor of economics, Jonathan Meer, after recently completing a similar summer trip to Guate-mala where he taught a class on gardening to school children and helped create a self-sus-taining garden.

Meer taught Alarcon in two classes — Eco-nomics of Education and Public Economics. He said it was Alarcon’s initiative that caught his eye and was the reason Meer encouraged him to apply to the outreach program.

“I was very impressed with his academic abilities, his work ethic and his interest in broader problems,” Meer said. “I think he has excellent intuition for the sorts of issues that 2Seeds addresses.”

Alarcon said both himself and Burton are working hard to raise a total of $12,000

in funding to pay for their research because all projects are funded directly through the coordinators.

Bonsey said the reason team members pay for their own funding is to make the project their own, and realize that 2Seeds is as much a financial investment as it is a timely one.

“They get creative in their fundraising, and in doing so build a great sense of ownership over their projects. They also develop an ex-tensive and committed network of investors to whom they are accountable, ” Bonsey said, “Nearly all of our project coordinators are not experts in agricultural development, and that’s the way we want it to be.”

The pair have managed to raise 66 percent of their financial goal by spreading the word through digital media outlets including Face-book, Twitter and even a blog-site created for friends and family members to follow their progress in Tanzania.

“The more people see our progress the more likely people are to make a donation,” Alarcon said. “We have a long way to go to raise the money — over the coming nine months we are supposed to raise the rest of it.”

Alarcon’s brother, Edgar Alaracon, who is currently working on his masters of science in agricultural economics, hopes that his brothers “admirable” decision to study abroad will act as a stepping stone towards future globaliza-tion.

“I love Wilson and I’m going to miss him a lot, but I think it’s a great opportunity,” Alar-con said. “I think it is something he his pas-sionate about and he’s going to come back and share with us all of the fun and great things he has accomplished over there. It’s always inter-esting to learn and hear about other cultures and see how other people think and interact.”

Whatever fate has in store for Alarcon in Tanzania, he said his only wish was to make his project the best it can be, and help the people of Lutindi lead better lives.

“Last year the group in Lutindi tripled the harvest income by selling at the right time and had amazing results,” Alarcon said. “I want this mission to be even better and to be able to come back and show people positive changes.”

Charity Continued from page 1

event marked the first time two women head-lined a major MMA bout.

“I had just come off the Cyborg loss, so I was a little bit bummed,” Carano said. “I had a black eye that I was trying to cover up with makeup, and I picked [Soderbergh] up from the train station and we had an amazing four-hour talk — not really about anything but about life and experiences. And then at the end of it he said, ‘this either going to happen really fast or it’s not going to happen at all.’ And it happened.”

With the Ocean’s heist series and Traffic under his belt, Soderbergh saw the potential in Carano to create a legitimate female action star — a woman more lethal than G.I. Joe, Channing Tatum, or for that matter, any ac-tor out there.

“I felt it would be interesting and unusual if we created a female character who performed physically, for real,” Soderbergh said. “No doubles, no cutting away. The rule was it had to be real, the result is that the film’s fights are shorter than you’re probably used to seeing in movie. In a realistic fight scene, somebody’s gonna get the drop kick and it’s over.”

Tatum, the self-admitted gentlemen who was taught not to hit a woman, said he was reluctant to hit Carano when a scene called for him to smash her in the face with a

ketchup bottle.Carano would soon coax him out his

gentlemen ways.“She called me a female p-word and then

I had to do it for my masculinity. But then she hit me twice as hard and I didn’t want to hit her anymore. She pretty much kicked my [butt].”

It didn’t take long for the audience to un-derstand Carano’s fury, as Soderbergh’s foot-age showed an intense, fast-faced brawl in a hotel room between Carano and Fassbender as the two smashed and destroyed everything in their surroundings—ending with Fassbender’s submission and shot to the face.

Though protective measures were taken, Soderbergh said padding did little to cushion Carano’s punches and knees to the gut.

“She actually knocked someone out in re-hearsal,” Tatum said.

The fight scenes may come easier for Cara-no, but it’s the acting part that she said has really opened her eyes to the entire filmmak-ing process.

“I just stayed open to it. I had to learn a lot about acting. I got acting 101. It ruined mov-ies for me for a couple of months, but now I appreciate them even more.”

It’s too early to tell if Carano has the act-ing chops to compliment her fighting skills, but Haywire certainly earned the apprecia-tion of several fans in attendance. The ver-dict will be known when Haywire releases January 20, 2012.
