When the national leaders in classical, contemporary, and musical theatre are right here in Washington, why go anywhere else?

For nearly three decades, Washington has been one of the most dynamic centers of theatre in America—rivaled only by New York in the number of productions presented each year. With productions presented by over 80 professional theatres in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and enjoyed by audiences more than two million strong, Washington theatres have what you want to see:

■ Re-imagined classics and revolutionary contemporary work

■ Electrifying world premieres and timeless revivals with innovative twists

■ Rousing musicals, touring companies, and festivals

■ Inspiring children’s theatre and staged readings

■ The incredible talents of world renowned actors, directors, and designers

■ Diverse and exciting performance spaces in contemporary structures, historic playhouses, and intimate venues

Washington Theatre: It’s what you do when you live here; it’s what you do when you visit here.

we

are

6 | 2012-2013 theatreWashington Guide

The only organization dedicated solely to

promoting, representing, and supporting

Washington theatres, artists, and audiences

of all ages.

theatreWashington promotes Washington theatre with research and

dynamic marketing initiatives; brings critical arts education services

to our community by serving as a clearinghouse for the region’s 90+

theatre education programs; and continues to honor excellence on

area stages with the annual presentation of the Helen Hayes Awards.

theatreWashington represents Washington theatre with proactive

and reactive advocacy services—as we recently did to increase

the District’s arts funding budget—to help progress important

issues and quell those that could be damaging to our thriving

theatre community.

theatreWashington supports Washington actors, designers,

technicians, administrators, production personnel, theatre leaders,

board members, and audiences with personal and professional

resources such as peer networking, emergency financial aid, learning

opportunities that address the growing economic, technological, and

logistical complexities of the theatre and web-based communication

systems to help them make essential connections.
