TOSA GOLD COAST OLYMPIC ORGAN
HAS A
NEW STORAGE PLACE
Graham Scarr has been a “Busy Boy”……. building a new Riser for the Olympic Organ at Maher
Hall.
Following the resurfacing of the floor at Maher Hall we found that the console housing was leaving
scratches on the floor when the organ was being moved from the rear to the front of the hall.
After talks with the Senior Citizens Club, the committee decided to relocate the organ on the stage.
The Speaker Boxes will be redesigned in the near future.
The committee thanks Graham for all his work on the organ. This rehousing of the organ was a
“big” undertaking by Graham……….!!!

Christmas in July Luncheon 2018
Musical Notes – Christmas In July – 1st Half
After a fabulous relaxed lunch, it was time for some music. Graham Scarr opened the proceedings for us,
with the bright and breezy 1920 Jolson hit “Avalon”. He then treated us to a lovely arrangement of a
Christmas favourite, “Mary’s Boy Child” …this song has been recorded by so many, but it was first a hit
for Harry Belafonte in 1956 and holds the record as the first hit to sell over 1 million copies in the UK
alone. This was followed by Gershwin’s “Someone To Watch Over Me”, and to finish up his bracket, a hit
from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Sunset Boulevard” …” Just One Look”. Well done Graham!
Our Guest Artist George Harvey then treated us to a couple of Christmas classics accompanied by our
very own Bill Schumacher. “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “The Christmas Song – Chest-
nuts Roasting on An Open Fire” were sensitively performed by the duo. Just beautiful!
Brett Kavanagh, (TOSA Q’s Secretary, and TOSA Gold Coast member now) had come down from Brisbane
to celebrate Christmas In July with us….so naturally we asked him to play! The Beatles classic
“Yesterday” was his opener, followed by a great arrangement of the “Theme From E.T” the movie. A
lovely grand performance fitting for the piece! The 1967 Tom Jones classic “Delilah” was his next choice,
and to finish up a fabulous bracket he invited me to join him on the Clavinova for a duet of the beautiful
and haunting “Windmills of My Mind”.
Brett also told the audience about our performance on the Christie the previous Tuesday for the Christa-
delphians Conference. We had the opportunity to show 800 people just how fabulous the Christie is in a
45min concert. Many had never seen a Cinema Pipe Organ before…and others hadn’t seen her for so
long they remembered the Christie being White and Gold! A great opportunity for us to showcase the
organ to a wide and varied audience from all over Australia and international visitors…and it was very
well received!
To finish the first half, and take us into afternoon tea, Jim McDonough and Bill Schumacher then led us
in Jim’s traditional Christmas Carol Sing-a-long. We journeyed through Jingle Bells”, “Away In a Man-
ger”, “Silent Night”, “O Come All Ye Faithful”, “The First Noel” and finished up with the “Aussie Jingle
Bells” …...... in a rusty Holden Ute! Well done gentlemen…..everyone was in fine voice….and thank you
Jim, we always look forward to your Christmas Carol sing-a-long, wouldn’t be a celebration without it!

Christmas in July Luncheon 2018
Musical Notes July 2018 2nd Half
After a lovely afternoon tea….an enlightening game of “Thankful Scattegories” …. many happy raffle win-
ners…and a “Song Titles Quiz” …we were ready for some more music!
Pam Webb graced the Clavinova with a special medley of songs with an “Aussie Country Christmas”
theme. Beginning with “Home Among the Gumtrees”, she moved through “When the Children Are
Asleep”.” Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas”.” Daddy’s Little Girl”. “The Fairy On The Christmas
Tree”. “Dungaree Doll”. “Baby Face”. “Rock-a-bye my Baby” … “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby”. .” Little Curly
Hair in a Highchair” ...” Little Man You’ve Had a Busy Day” ... “Little Drummer Boy”.. ” Favourite Things”.
.”Teddy bears Picnic”. .and ”Wedding Of The Painted Doll”. “Old Man Emu’, “Skippy” and “Six White
Boomers” made an appearance, then on with “Christmas Tree” …” Little Sir Echo” …” Hitty Potty Miss”
(yes, that’s the title of the song?!) …and “All I Want For Christmas Is my Two Front Teeth”. To round out
her story, we had “Mr Sandman” …” Let’s Put Out the Lights and go to Sleep” ….” Celebrate” ….and a big
finish with…. “Joy to The World”! We always love Pam’s very clever musical stories, and today’s special
one was no exception. Thank you, Pam, well done as always!
George Harvey, our Guest Artist for the day then treated us to some beautiful vocals (accompanied by
yours truly). Starting with a special Billy Joel song that had appeared in the “Legends” show on the Chris-
tie last year, the very moving “And So It Goes” featuring the Olympic and George’s beautiful voice. “Jingle
Bells”, in swinging Michael Buble style (well originally Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters style) was
next, with me playing the part of all 3 Andrews sisters. Then we were treated to the gorgeous Tom
Jones/David Foster arrangement of Christmas classic…. “Mary’s Boy Child” …one of my all-time favour-
ites! To finish up his bracket, George chose Sinatra’s very moving “My Way” ….and had you all singing
along! Thank you, George, wonderful as always. We are so lucky to have you come along and share your
talents…. please come sing for us again soon!
To finish up the day, I played a request on the Olympic. I was asked to play “The Holy City” … and far be it
for me not to honour a request. Quite a fitting ending to our lovely festive “Christmas In July” celebration!
Thank you to all who came along to celebrate the day with us, members and friends all had a ball and
went home with a bit of Christmas cheer and goodwill in their hearts.
