HARD REPORTLou Gramm, "Ready Or Not", Atlantic. Howinstantly
massive is it, you ask? How does theweek's #1 point increase grab
you? Try 41 playjumps after only a week. Would you believe 11powers
and 61 heavies? You want phones? We tallyup 13 top 5 mentions,
including WKQQ, WRCN,WWCT, WAOR, WBCN, WONE and KFMX. KQWB's
TyBanks isn't alone when he comments, "I like it betterthan
anything on the last Foreigner album"... Withreaction like that,
you'd best believe your listenersare ready and willing for more,
with the title track thesmart call. Find it in the dark.
More On The Picks...
Barbusters, "Light of Day", Epic.Be late on "Light" and you are.
What could be easierthan Joan Jett covering Bruce from the
upcoming
,chael J. Fox film, especially in light of her recoltsuccess
with "Roadrunner"? As WEBN's Curt Garyputs it, "We're wearing Joan
like a cheap suite, andit's a perfect fit"... And considering how
much actionthe advance cassette picked up, this one really
can'tmiss. It's a formula Midas would envy.
Esquire, "Up Down Turnaround", Geffen.Could this be the start of
a whole new format --"Music Of Your Wife"? The first 12" picks up a
#99debut behind 15 adds, but we suggest you turn yourattention to
what we think is the album's obviousstandout. We've heard comments
on "Sunshine" andthe Greg Gillispie favorite "To The Rescue", but
whynot start with the one that most closely resemblesYes's
catalogue classics? Give it the singalong testand you'll agree.
The Gregg Allman Band, "I'm No Angel",Epic. Here's the double
shot album pick after lastweek's "Angel" accolades, if only to
re-emphasizewhat a comeback coup this represents for Greg. Asnoted
by WIBA's Jack Mitchell, "Gregg just blew meaway. 'Angel' is easily
the best record of the week"....WEGR's Kelly Cruise concurs,
"'Angel' is one hell ofa record"... And as fast as this one's gonna
fly, let'shave a little depth action, adventurers! "Can't
KeepRunnin'" is the best new original, with the blues segat the end
of side 2 also pretty cool. The Saints, "Just Like Fire Would", TVT.
It'strue. Somehow Steve Gottlieb of TV Tunes fame gothis mitts on
what has to be a big big winner fromDown Under. This acclaimed cult
band (well, that'swhat the bio sez) has come up with one of those
rareradio songs that practically promotes itself. We lovethe early
Graham Parker vocal feel, and doesn't itsound like Brinsley backing
'em up? Hear it on thenew Hard Cassette Sampler, or the Network
mailer.Either way, it's a great song.Robin Trower, "No Time",
Crescendo. 93stationt. iater it's still building like the hammers
'ohell. Call it impressive plus performance from a littlelabel that
could. Robin's up at 7 (WQFM, KBCO,KLOS, KRQR, KSJO), heavy at 16,
and top 5requested at the likes of KOME, WCMF, WGTR, andWHCN. The
above translates to a 34-29 HardHundred move and 35-30 Lp progress.
With activeairplay and audience response matched only by majoracts
and labels,"No Time" has more than earned apiece of your airtime.
No Risk at this stage.
ALSO NEW THIS WEEKNew Push tracks:Paul Simon, "Boy In The
Bubble", WB. 25current reports tells us most of you are
basicallywaiting for the green flag. That special promo CDyou'll be
receiving this week should serve thepurpose. "Graceland" is a
musical and socialphenomenon of the first order, probably the
adultrock classic of the last six months --so actaccordingly.
Bob Geldof, Love Like a Rocket", Atlantic. You've got to hear it
on the radio to appreciate thosechunky Clapton riffs and the
overall listener appeal ala KROQ's heavy airplay I noticed in LA
last week."The World" was fine holiday stuff, and especiallywell
timed in that regard, but in terms of killer airsound, raw rock and
roll attitude and Bob's imageand profile, this one's the real deal.
You've got aserious airtime investment to date, and one ofpopular
music's most selfless citizens could sure usea little more support
on this all important project. It'snot as if the song alone doesn't
deserve it.
The Cutting Crew, "Died In Your Arms",Virgin. We first heard it
on the by now famousVirgin "Veritable Suckaaaahhhs" sampler, and
liked itso much we copped it for ours!! Right after GreggAllman, no
less --cut 2, side 1. You'll flip for the worldclass vocals and
melody, not to mention the 10ccarrangement. Got to be the best
positioned pop/rockcrossover on the street, one we expect the new
labelto bring in quickly.
Big Dish. "Slide", WB. This smooth and languidlove song has a
cool groove that should cross nicelywith serious rock/pop/new
alternative action --and italso has a one week head start as an
import add atWLUP. A ladykiller deluxe.
Tapetalk: By now you should a have receivedvolume three in our
Cassette Sampler series, andalthough we've made note of things just
out (Allman,Saints, Cutting Crew, Stranglers, Tina, Vinnie, and
China Crisis), we want to hip you to a fewmore items you can expect
shortly.... Enigma's newband Wenesday Week does a great job of what
Iyou might call neo-California pop on "Missionary".High marks for
the electrified acoustic guitar and andclean girl -group vocals...
also pay special attention toRobyn Hitchcock's "If You Were a
Priest". Youmight have seen the big spread on Robyn in the
lastRolling Stone. He will cross to mass appeal, and"Priest" has
already gone to #1 New/Alternative. He'san artist you should know
about.... If you're in themarket for some solid 18-24 male targeted
crunch, dial into Atco's new act Reckless and their track"Nitty
Gritty". They're obviously big AC/DC admirer, and this is totally
believable garage stuff....As alongtime fan of Patty Smyth's voice,
I've beenhoping she would come up with material to matchthat first
Scandal Lp, and she comes through inspades on her upcoming release.
Scam a tape fromyour Columbia rep and check the first single
"NeverEnough", the gorgeous "Called to Heaven" and herkiller cover
of Danny Wilde's "Isn't It Enough"....You'll have Andy Taylor's "I
Might Lie" (MCA) in aweek or two and we expect that one to fly on
theradio....and we're hoping to talk Bill Bennett out of anadvance
of the Damned's cover of Love's "AloneAgain or". Smashola.

through with 25adds, nine increases, and charts to match:Underlined
50-35 on the Hard Hundred, 29-23 AlbumImpact. Now current on 80

Karen Simmons echoes "We'repleased to be able to go five cuts deep.
We've neverbeen able do do that with Winwood before"...and

Stevie Ray Vaughan , "Willie The Wimp",Epic. Nothing be stopping

Julian Cope, "World Shut Your Mouth",Island. Has Island done an
incredible promotionjob on this artist or what? And just wait til
you hear"Trampoline"! The latest great white Cope pushesthe "on"
column to 108, with 14 adds and 6 increases, and you know 19 heavies
spells serious pluscredibility. Double bulleted 43-38 HH, 33-28
album.Top 5 calls include WMAD, KABL, KORX, KQWB,CILQ and WTKX.
Santana, "Veracruz", Columbia. The second halfof the label's one
two punch pulls in 54 first weekers, with WPLR, KOME, KSJO, KKBR,
KFMH, and WMDKthe early heavies. KFMG's Michael Davis says,"Santana
continues a great tradition. 'Veracruz"makes me want to jump on a
plane and join theparty"...from WEGR's Kellycruz, "It's a 3.5
minutevacation". WWCT's Phil Manicki feels "Carlos soundsas crisp
as ever. Add that killer hook and you've gota big smash"... New at
#48.
Deep Purple, "Call of the Wild", Polygram. The 80-57 advance cops
the Monster Move honorsthis week, further substantiation of our
claim that"Call" kicks "Attitude"'s ass. Ditto the 18-23 dip forthe
latter as well. WOUR's Tom Starr advises, "Even ifyou don't have an
attitude problem, 'Call Of The Wild'is the tune on the record".
It's #6 Most Added with17, now on 41, upped at KAZY, WBAB, and
KTYD.

Concrete Blonde, "True", IRS one of Ourfavorite new contenders

KVREupping play. The 46 station count makes for apromising #82
track debut and #47 Lp showing.WHCN's Kim Alexander says, "last
week I braggedabout playing it non stop at home. This week we
put"True" on the radio. The lyrics are such a great pickme up"...
WHJY's Glenn Stewart says, "If 'new music'is this year's buzzword,
there is no reason to ignoreConcrete Blonde. It's a haunting melody
that will addtexture to any upscale AOR."... and from WPDH'sPam
Brooks, "It has the kind of quality about it thatmakes the tune
stay with you'...
Eric Clapton, "Miss You", Duck/WB. I guessall we can add to the
obvious here is the fact that thelatest push track is now on just
half of our reportingstations. It's got 13 new, 30 heavies, 2
powers, and 8increases. KDJQ's Ron Garrett says, "Eric must
havetaken some fun vitamins or something. He certainly ishaving fun

;TEAR D REPORTDon Dixon, "Praying Mantis", Enigma. Two?Three
months later? And still going strong. Let thenumberos do the
talking: New on KSJO, KOME,WZE d and WOOJ... Upped at KFOG, WBCN,
WRXK,WHMD and KVRE.... and, top 5 requested at WDVE,WDHA, and WQBK
where Bobby Welch sez, "It'sbeen our most requested song for the
last twomonths". Or, how about this from WAOR's KarinSimmons,
"Don's comical lyrics are working very wellwith us"... So why's it
only on 64?Vinnie Vincent, "No Substitute", Chrysalis. We've found a
surprising number of programmerssimply haven't taken the time to
listen, so we've madeit easy. It's right there when you cruise side
2 of ourlatest sampler. You'll want to get familiar with addweeks
like this: WXRC, WFYV, KICT, KQDS, WWZUand five more, and KLAQ and
KDJQ increase. FromKOOS Mike Keller, "for crying out loud, it's a
tender, crunching ballad. It's early but it's working"... In
short, when the fast selling debut Lp, in Chrysalis historyoffers up
a super wide demo power ballad, the wiseguy puts it to work. New at
#81.
Crowded House, "Don't Dream It's Over",Capitol. Capitol's Ace
long term belief andpromotion continues to reap major divs. New on
9,upped on WBCN, WWCT, KRIX, KSTM , KJET and 4more, heavy on 9 and
power at 4. WLAV's DaveLange warns, "I can't believe everyone is
blowing thisrecord. Top 40 is going to play it first in 70% of
thecountry and it's a great song"... WQBK's Bob Welchechoes, "We've
had a market exclusive but it lookslike other AOR's are gonna get
beat on this one. TooBad. It's a great song with great hooks"...
Underlined55-52.
Brighton Rock, "We Came To Rock", Atco.Yeah, we like that WBCN
add. Very nice. Also new atWAPL, WOUR, and WIXV. Already on KNCN,
KRNA,WTPA, WAQX, WDHA, WHJY, WMGM and KISS, whoincreased play. 21
adds to date bring it on at #100.
China Crisis, "Arizona Sky", A&MI'll confess I found the
hook to be unbelievablymilquetoast even after a couple of passes.
And thenthat crystal clear CD did me in. It's mellow, but itworks.
New on WLAV, WBCN, WONE,WWZU..Increased at KESI, WLIR, CFNY, and
KZOQ,and top 5 requested at KBCO. Watch it build.
Hank Williams, Jr. "My Name is Bocephus",WB. .. And you
questioned our front page mentionlast week? Hah!! Check this from
WAAF's RussMottla, "A completely reactive AOR record. We'realready
getting phones on the record and it seems tobe reacting as fast as
anything we've added in thelast six months." Also new on KQRS and
WKLS, twoof the tougher adds on the circuit. And wait til
MTVhammers that Van Halen video, folks.Pseudo Echo, "Living in a
Dream", RCA. Nowhere's a reaction record if we ever heard one.
Thepast four weeks have brought in raves to spare and a40 station
add total, so expect to see those phonesfill in shortly. This week
WLIR, WDHA, WWZU, KRIXand KSTM up play, with WFYV increasing play.
Keycalls to date: WAAF, WHJY, WCCC, KZEL, KLPX,WPLR, WNEW, WDHA,
KROQ, KNCN, KGB and WLIR.Underlined 86-80.
Colin Hay, "Hold Me", Col. The Loop leads theway with an
increase into heavy, with additional upsfrom KSQY, KSTM and KZOQ.
11 adds takes the totalnow playing to 72, with CHOM, KTAO, WIOQ
andWPLR also heavy. The Track pulls up 56-50, beingthe Lp in at
#41.
NEW AIRPLAY ANALYSISGenesis, "Tonight", Atlantic. And who
arrangedthat Michelob commercial into the live Genesiscutaway from
Cleveland on the American MusicAwards the other night, eh? Judy?
Danny? Vince?Come on, fess up. Meanwhile, back on the radio,
therecord sprints 24-17, with 10 adds, 12 ups, 9 powers,35 heavies,
and 5 top 5 mentions.
Bruce Hornsby, "Mandolin Rain", RCA. 122now playing and 30
increases is basically all youneed to know here. 15 powers and 67
heavies makefor a 13-6 HH underline, turning the album around 5-4.
Currently top 5 at KYYS, WPYX, KZRR, WLNZ,WZYC and WBYR.
Iggy Pop, "Real Wildongoing add count climbsWRXL AND WPDH
severalat WBCN, KLOS and KGBsecond track is a minute
Child", A&M. Iggy'sto 88, with WIYY, WPYX,new notables...
Increasesare further proof that theaway from breaking big.
Underlined 42-39. Be sure to catch him on thePretenders tour,
too.Boston, "Can't Cha Say", MCA. You'll probablypower 'em ail
before it's all over. This report has"Cha" climbing 20-15, with 101
to date, 10 increases,6 powers and 47 heavies. Top 5 phones:
WMGM,WRCN, KICT, KRQU, WZZO, WIMZ and WHEB.
REO Speedwagon, "That Ain't Love", Epic.Your basic electric
start hit machine blows in with a19-13 underline and sure-fire top
10 play a givennext week. 5 list power, 29 say heavy, and 15 moveup
in play. Now on 121 reporting stations, withWKLS, KOME and WAOR
leading in requests.
Tina Turner, "What You Get Is What youSee", Capitol. Now if Eric
Clapton can take the timeto lug that Strat down to the studio, and
crank outthat patented liquid riffs (when he'd probably ratherbe
hanging out over at Gerrity's place or playingtennis with Puvogel)
the leeeeaest you guys could dois LISTEN to this 12". Image
Schimmage. This numberrocks, as you'll find with one pass. It is
not, repeat, not pop glitz. New on 12.
Triumph, "Just One Night", MCA. Wouldn't itbe a hoot if a ballad
finally put these troopers overthe top? More than a few we spoke
with this weekexpressed that sentiment, and you've got to
respectthis track's made for TV remix--thick as a brick.Already on
WHJY, KLPX, KISS, KOME, KGB, KSHEand a dozen more, debut #88.
KBC, "America", Arista. It sure looks poised forpaydirt to us.
KLOS, WDIZ, WBCN, KLPX, KRIX andKZEL headline the week's 16
increases, and adds atWDVE and KTAO moves the total playing to 119.
Notethe one position push into the top 10.
World Party, "Ship of Fools", Chrysalis. Eventhough we're
looking at a 12-8 crusher song move, our printout shows play at only
129 of 181 reportingstations. Get with it!! Everybody should be hot
andgetting hotter here. Take a hint from 14 powers, 23increases,
and 17 --count 'em --17 top 5 mentions. Bea shame if they had a
platinum party and you missedthe call.
Rob Jungklas, "Make It Mean Something",Manhattan. 91 current
reports on the third trackfrom an album out close to how many
months? If it'sgone this far, it'd be downright cruel not to see
itthrough. The adds continue, with WKLC, WKQQ,KTYD, KEZE and WIBA,
as WMGM, KGB, KKDJ,WBCN, WONE and WAQX increase. Underlined
37-33.

HARED REPORTKZEW CHANGES
Eight -year KZEW/Dallas vet John Rody is out.Originally hired as
a newsman and partnered withJohn LaBella (no typo--DeBella says "I
get hismail, he gets mine"), Rody had been the morning hostat the
Zoo since LaBella went to CHR WTIC/Hartfordlast year.
Dallas radio fixture and honest -to -God attorneyKen Rundle is
filling in.
PD Dennis Anderson tells NOISE, "I've hiredhim on as a 'staff
announcer'. Now just what dayparthe winds up in, I don't know. But
he's such a greatutility player, he's doing mornings."
Anderson is looking for a morning show. "Thereare six high
profile morning shows in this marketand everything I read tells me
that 'shock' isn'tcutting it. I want an adult approach to AOR. I
wantsomeone who is in touch with the world, and cankeep it topical
without the buttons, buzzers andbells."
Anderson notes that most of the syndicatedprogramming on the
weekends has been yanked, butMike Harrison's "Rock Connection" has
beenadded. The difference between the station's soundnow and a
month ago? "It's much more familiar.Nowhere near as broad as it
was."
His tower was hit by a military jet ten days ago(KZEW is at 60%
power on AC KVIL's stick), andAnderson hopes to be back at full
power next week.
New owners Anchor are looking for new digs forKZEW and AM KRQX.
"I'm sure it'll be palatial,"cracks Dennis. "Like Surf City. Two
girls for everyboy."
INDUSTRIAL NOISE
DIGITALISAccording to Reuters, Japanese companies are
likely to ship digital audio tape (DAT) players, a rivalto CD
technology, to the US market for sale in Marchor April.
First DATSUN. And now, DAT without the SUN.The record industry
is less than crazy about this.
Labels see a bootleg nightmare complete with a guyin a hockey
mask with a meat cleaver. No deadteenagers in this movie --just
lots of 'em knockingout knock -offs.
"Here we go again," says one label VP/Promotion,alluding to past
industry efforts to curb the transfer ofmusic without compensation.
"This new technology isnot going be a good thing for us."
Cliff Schultz, Natl. Sales Dir. EMI adds, "They'vestill got the
record button on those machines, andeveryone'il be able to record
CD's to DAT. Theproblem is everybody's living room is starting to
looklike a stereo store. Or the Power Station."
Labels fear consumers will use digital tapes andplayers to
pirate CD's. The industry has pushed hardfor the insertion of
computer chips that would makecopying recordings difficult.
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!Manufacturers seem unlikely to comply
with record
Industry wishes. The capability to record would beone of the
DAT's big selling points.
NOW HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY?!CD makers are also worried that
digital cassettes
will cut into their sales just as they're starting toshow a
profit. Over 3 million CD players were sold inthe US since their
introduction in 1983. And accordingto Industry estimates, compact
discs bring In morerevenue than do album sales.
So what prompts these people to make thesemachines? SATAN? No,
church lady, that's not it.
The need to introduce an attractive new consumer -electronics
product to boost a slumping market is
pushing the Japanese to go ahead with marketingdespite continued
opposition.
"They're being very careful about this, because thefeud with
software makers is still very much inexistence," said Darrel
Whitten, a Bache Securitiesanalyst.
YOU OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURESMN tells NOISE they have a a VJ slot
open. Turn
down your pacemaker and read on."The staff is down one, and
we're looking for
young face with a working knowledge of rock & roll,"says
Executive On -Air Nanny Steve Leeds. NewYork. Skyscrapers and
eveythin'. Just the way Ipitchured it. Here --hold this...
Send your 3/4 or with VHS tape to: MN, 515 W.57th St., NYC
10019, Attn: Steve Leeds, Director ofOn -Air -Talent.
Jobnapper's textbook: Lots of times a CREATIVEtape will get you
places a slick production house tapewon't. Show them something
different.

SINGLE PICKS
BIG DISH "SLIDE" (WB) A surprise of theweek --surprisingly
mainstream that is. "Slide" is aone -listen close for the mellow
-minded. They'vebrought romance back to rock with song
ingredientsthat make this subtle smash one to grab early.
THE MISSION U.K. "WASTELAND"(POLYGRAM) Just what import
orientedprogrammers knew all along, as evidenced by anearly chart
showing --one half of the Sisters reformedare well on their way to
an Album Radio party. Don'tbe fooled by the slow start, it breaks
out of the greyvia Wayne Hussey's moody, intense vocals and
theband's shady rhythm tactics.
VENETIANS "SO MUCH FOR LOVE"(CHRYSALIS) The Venetians made a
briefappearance in '86 with the "Calling In The Lions" Lp,and the
reappearance of this single is well in coming. It's dance appeal is
a given, but a guitar -smart hooksounds better the second time
around.
PETER HIMMELMAN "11TH CONFESSION"(ISLAND) This track may be the
sleeper to wake themasses for Peter's impressive solo project.
Thosewho knew him from Sussman Lawrence, (a band fromMinneapolis
who released some fine material lastyear), will find versatility to
be his strength --andhere's a soft, mid -tempo encounter you'll
want tomake room for.
Also New....THE CREEPERS "MISERABLESINNERS" (LAST TIME AROUND)
Afterseveral listens, I realized that Marc Riley has a strongsense
of using music that makes one want to hearmore of his teasingly
clever songs. You'll find morethan one favorite right off, but
"Honest Lies" isoutstanding for its simple, sad but brilliant
theme....More manic is "Chocolate Box", (dark humor), and"Baby's On
Fire" is the buzz track on the Lp--lend anear. This is truly the
rise of Marc Riley, not the Fall.
CHARTSTARS
LOS LOBOS "BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON"(SLASH/WB) Those Lobos are
through the roofand on to higher air -planes with an album that
hasprogrammers adding, increasing and praising it all theway to 1*
this week. On the HH front, it kicks in a25-20* on "Shakin'" with
album airplay honorsmoving it to 12* Impact. We've got 143 reports
on thesingle, and it's far from finished building yet....
CONCRETE BLONDE (I.R.S.) Yes, it's "True"that helped the mega
-move to 24* this issue. Withthe total playing number at a healthy
46 stations, youcan rest assured that next week's progress will be
arepeat performance.... New at CFOX, KKBR, KORX.WHCN, WHJY, WONE,
CHEZ, KFMQ, WBCN and more.
PSYCHEDELIC FURS "HEARTBREAK BEAT"(COLUMBIA) Number two status
on the trackschart (first week) is no small feat. It's been
workingfor Doug Clifton, KBCO, "since last year", and
we'veexperienced an early break at radio since thedomestic release
last week.... Joe Blood, KEZO, feels"This is the one that will
break them wide open"....Dave Lange, WLAV, says "This is their
mostaccessible record yet." Dig in the the 10* debut, with48 adds
this week!

the death of Hollywood Fats due toa heart attack in December.
MARGO BUCHANAN, who has sung backingvocals with Tina Turner,
Dire Straits and the Pet ShopBoys, has signed a solo recording
deal.
THE STYLE COUNCIL, who have a new albumcalled "The Cost Of
Loving" just being released, alsohave completed a new film called
"Jerusalem". "It's a33 -minute almost documentary. It's got a
storyline toit and a quite sketchy kind of acting to it. We're
justtrying to put some of our ideas across in a dramaticsense,"
Paul Weller says. "It is a lot easier for usdoing a film because we
had more or less totalcontrol over the film, we were involved in
editing andthe whole presentation.
David Foster is to produce at least one song forformer Who lead
singer ROGER DALTREY.
Albums from NANA VASCONCELOS andCOURTNEY PINE will be the first
releases on thenew Antilles/New Directions label being introduced
byIsland Records. Vasconcelos' album was recordedbetween his tours
with Don Cherry and Pat Metheny.Pine has performed with Art Blakey,
Elvin Jones andCharlie Watts. Several other album releases
arealready planned.
GENE LOVES JEZEBEL are in the studio inEngland working on a new
single, but they plan tocome to the U.S. and record a new album in
May,probably in Los Angeles.
THE SMITHS will soon have a sort of greatest hitsalbum out,
called "The World Won't Listen". The Lpincludes 16 tracks,
including "Panic", "Ask", and"Bigmouth Strikes Again". The album
will alsoinclude the previously unreleased track, "You JustHaven't
Earned It Yet, Baby", which was recorded lastfall.
Prices of music videos are continuing to fall to recordlows in
England. Hour-long music videos are nowcarrying a list price of
$15, with shorter clipcompilations and videos selling for less than
$10. Inaddition, there are plans to begin releasing videosingles,
with one or two cuts, for $7 or so, about theprice of a record
album in the U.K. It's too early totell if similar price drops can
be expected in the U.S.
STEWART COPELAND is working on an opera forthe San Francisco
Opera Company.
Robin Millar, most notably Sade's producer, is puttingtogether a
new record label which should be inbusiness by the spring. Millar,
who heads the PowerPlant Studios in Willesden, England, probably
will callthe label Scarlett Records, "my daughter's name andalso an
oblique reference to my political leanings."He says he already has
two acts "brought to me byproducers who felt they were far too good
for recordcompanies," but he declines to name them.
- "Top Of The Pops" continues to wield a great deal ofinfluence
on record sales in England, and recent
shows have had massive impact on the charts. Salesof the Genesis
single, "Land Of Confusion", and the
MUSIC NEWSalbum, "Invisible Touch", doubled after the
bandappeared on the program. And the Pretenders sawsales of their
new album increase by 150 percentbecause of the group's TOTP
appearance, bringingthe Lp from the 30s in the chart to the top 15.
RobbieNevil, Iggy Pop and Paul Simon are other artists whohave
benefited recently from the program's Thursdaynight airing.
A new album from PATTY SMYTH, called "NeverEnough", is slated
for release in late February.
BILLY JOEL has been honored by theCongressional Arts Caucus for
"his outstandingcontribution to our cultural legacy." Joel received
theaward at a luncheon in Washington. The caucus ismade up of
almost 200 Congressional members whosupport the arts. Congressman
Thomas Downey ofNew York called Joel "a model and inspiration
tostruggling young musicians."
The brother of CLARENCE CLEMONS, sax playerfor Bruce
Springsteen, is also a musician. But, he'snot as well known. That's
because he's director ofthe 2nd Marine Division Band at Camp
Lejeune, NorthCarolina. He's a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, and
has been a bandleader since August. "Clarencewas so much bigger" in
high school, WILLIAMCLEMONS says. "He was on the football team,
andI was able to excel by playing in the band all thetime." William
says Clarence taught him how to play, but the two were never
competitive.
And now, the latest music news LIVEFROM LONDON, courtesy of CFNY
and ourexclusive reporter, LEE CARTER. Lee canbe heard on
CFNY'sMagazine" program and on "Live FromLondon" aired Wednesday
evenings.
The British music industry trade, "Music Week", intheir lead
article this week sees the latest revolutionin digital technology
as The Compact Disc Video. TheCDV will go on sale to the British
public in the fall, inorder to fully capitalize on the Christmas
market. Themanufacturing of it is a joint venture between
Phillipsand Du Pont. "Music Week" project the CDV ashaving an
impact as great as the cassette tape;combining digital sound with
Laser -vision qualitypictures, which the top brass of the music biz
wereable to view for themselves at a special privatereception in
London this week. The two proposedformats of CDV will be Lp and
single. The single willbe a 5" disc, the same size as the current
CD's,containing a video of six minutes and twenty minutesof music.
The Lp will be a 12" disc with an album'sworth of music with
coordinated pictures. Of greatsignificance, according to Maurice
Oberstein, ChiefExecutive of Polygram Leisure U.K., is that the
CDVsingle will retail for less than $8, which he believeswill at
last pull in the teen market so far unscathed bythe CD boom. But I
wonder whether they, or theyuppies who've just invested in standard
CDmachines, will fork out the moula for new ones; theprice of the
machines is the only detail significantlymissing from the analysis
put forward so far.
No CDV's for THE STYLE COUNCIL yet, but theyhave nevertheless
decided to release their latestalbum in a rather curious format,
here in the U.K.Instead of the conventional Lp at 33, "The Cost

cite improving the quality of the music for this move."The

Further details are coming in about International AIDSDay on 1st
April. It is now known that the followinghave pledged their
support: Peter Gabriel, SimpleMinds, U2, The Pet Shop Boys, Alison
Moyet, ThePsychedelic Furs, The Communards, Holly Johnson,Paul
Weller, The Blow Monkeys, Aswad and SwingOut Sister. However, a
pledge of support does notnecessarily mean a promise to perform and
it alsoremains to be seen which of these artists will beplaying the
big Wembley show and which will beinvolved in the other, smaller
concerts up and downthe country during the same week.
LEVEL 42 are back. After funking away since 1981,no one was more
surprised than they to suddenlybecome one of the hottest groups
from L.A. toMontreal last year. They have a new single out on2nd
February called "Running In The Family" with anLp to follow in
March to coincide with a British tour.
When I interviewed ANDY PARTRIDGE of XTC formy CFNY Sunday show,
he bluntly stated that he wasunhappy with producer Todd Rundgren's
editorialdecisions for their last Lp, "Skylarking". Now theband
have basically crammed all the songs that Todddidn't like onto the
B-side of their latest 12", "TheMeeting Place". The tracks all deal
with violence:"Terrorism", "Let's Make A Den", "Find The Fox"
and"The Troubles".
The Cult's BILLY DUFFY has apparently beenauditioning to play on
Mick Jagger's next Lp. Billysays, "Not everyone gets the chance to
play fivesongs with Mick Jagger and Jeff Beck." To which, this
week's "Melody Maker" quipped, "Frankly, noteveryone would want the
chance to play five songswith Mick Jagger and Jeff Beck!"
I asked JULIAN COPE this week whether he wasexpecting "World
Shut Your Mouth" to pick up asmuch as it has in North America. "It
has a certaincrassness which I realize that the Americans
couldappreciate. My wife, being from New York, said,"Yeah, that's
got a kind of bullishness about it thatthe Americans will like.
It's a typical isolationiststatement. Even if it's seen from the
point of view ofa big country perhaps telling everyone to get lost,
Isee it as telling everyone to get lost from my point ofview, as a
personal statement, but I can see howthese lyrics get drawn up to a
world level veryeasily." Julian also revealed to CFNY listeners
and"The Hard Report" that his Lp is now completelyrecorded after
six months and is to be called "SaintJulian". "We spent a lot of
time getting it right.During "The Teardrop Explodes", you'd get
thesebusinessmen who would come in an do things likerelease the
singles that the group didn't want to.After a while, I overreacted
and did things like justleave tours and go home. Now if someone's
messingme around, I just tell them and they stop." Cope'sabout to
start his U.K. tour and, indeed, I hope tocatch his show later this
week. His unique space -hopper microphone technique is in good
order (asseen in the "World..." video) and his new band seemsuper
tight, judging by a recent live TV performance.
Also around town, THE JESUS AND MARYCHAIN made their return at
The National Ballroomwith their ever familiar chainsaw sound. They
alsoperformed a special session for John Peel's radioshow. Little
change in evidence with their newsongs, although they are in their
slower vein, a la"Just Like Honey".
FRANKIE are at the tail -end of their tour andwhether Holly's
leaving or not is becoming irrelevantas in truth, the group are
going through their finaldeath throes creatively. Not that they
haven't triedreal hard, but the adrenalin that pumped when"Relax"
and "Two Tribes" smashed into the U.K.scene is just not there.
The film that THE POGUES went down to Spain toshoot is nearing
release here. It's the third featurefor director Alex Cox ("Repo
Man", "Sid And Nancy")and is called "Straight To Hell". It's a
spaghettiwestern spoof, loosely satirizing the classic films
ofSergio Leone, which Cox shot in a miraculous threedays on a
minuscule budget of $1.5 million. The plottakes place in a
fictional town called Blanco and aswell as The Pogues features Joe
Strummer, GraceJones, Elvis Costello, Dennis Hopper, Dick
Rude,Courtney Love and Sy Richardson. Alex told"Sounds", "It's the
story of this horrible town wherethe townspeople are worse than the
outlaws. It's fullof lynchings, gratuitous sadism,
cannibalism, perversion and all kinds of good stuff!"....
Meanwhile,The Pogues are in the process of rehearsing newmaterial,
without Cait, of course. Some tracks they'vealready cut are with
their senior Irish idols, theveteran traditional folk group, The
Dubliners. Thecuts will appear on a forthcoming double Lp. But
oneof the tracks, "The Irish Rover", will be available as asingle
in February.
Kirk Brandon has re-formed a new version of his oldgroup, THE
SPEAR OF DESTINY. They're aboutto release a single and album and
will be touring theU.K. in April. The single, with no release date
yet, iscalled "Stranger In Our Town". The new line-up ofSpear Of
Destiny is Kirk, the guitarist Stevie B., SteveBarnacle on bass,
Pete Barnacle on drums and VolkerJansenn on keyboards. The Lp comes
out in April.
The plans for WEA in 1987 were outlined at theirsales conference
this week. Despite the decline oftheir star boy Howard Jones, WEA
U.K. had theirmost successful year in 1986 and hoped to repeat itin
1987 through such acts as Hollywood Beyond, MattBianco, Echo And
The Bunnymen, Fuzzbox, NickKamen and Red Box. In addition, WEA
havepromised to make more CD's available and to performmajor
marketing campaigns for Simply Red, NickKamen and Paul Simon.
IN BRIEFThe HOUSEMARTINS are on the brink of visitingNorth
America. Says Norman Cook, "We'll probablybe hounded by the moral
majority - should begreat!".... SIMON LE BON impersonates Al
Jolsonin the new Duran video for "Skin Trade".... Guesswho SHIRLEY
(from Pepsi & Shirley and ex -Whamfame) is talking about, "I
remember the first time Itook him out he was sweating so much, his
T-shirtwas completely wet. Luckily we were going downcountry lanes
so there wasn't anything serious to hit.I told him to turn right,
indicate and change gear. Sohe went straight for a bush. We were
okay, but he

NEW RELEASES
A band who've been getting a lot of hype here thisweek are The
Christians, purely on the basis of theirdebut single, "FORGOTTEN
TOWN". Their soundreminds me slightly of the L.A. band
TheUntouchables, but somehow with all the ska sparkleremoved. Look
out for The Christians on IslandRecords.... Blowing my mind at the
moment is asingle by a very promising young band called TheBible
with "MAHALIA". Fifteen years ago, one ofAmerica's greatest gospel
singers, Mahalia Jackson, died. And as further evidence of how
deeply eventhe youngest British bands revere American blackmusic,
The Bible have written this absolutely beautifultribute to her,
which if it were not for the fact that it ison the independent
Backs label I would otherwisepredict a worldwide top ten hit. It
will remind one alittle in style of Nick Heyward's 1983 hit
"WHISTLEDOWN THE WIND", but I think it's a lot morepolished and
moving than that.... The Smiths newsingle "SHOPLIFTERS OF THE
WORLDUNITE" is now out. It's another slower and moodiersong made
extra special by Johnny Marr'sextraordinary overlaid guitar work
that genuinely addsa new dimension to The Smiths' sound. Unlike
someof the last Lp's heavier cuts, it also contains amemorable hook
that sinks in after a few plays.Unhesitatingly recommended for
anyone who isspinning The Smiths at present.
CHARTS
Knocking Europe off the top spot in the Hot Metalcharts is the
veteran Irish axeman Gary Moore with
"OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY". Strongcontender in the top ten is
Gary's old cohort PhilLynnot with the memorial single "KINGS
CALL"which is such a splendid record, I've been spinning iton my
own show for the alternative station CFNY - itis a record that
should cross all boundaries.... Also"FACE THE DAY" by Great White
comes straight inat 5. "LIVE MAGIC" by Queen has bumped KateBush
off the top of the CD chart, but Kate continuesto reign the home
-video and national Lp charts."THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT" by Deep
Purpleenters the Lp charts at 10.
TOP 40 SINGLESNew Entries: 40. "LOVE IS FOREVER" by BillyOcean.
39. "BEHIND THE MASK" by Eric Clapton.35. "YOU SEXY THING" by Hot
Chocolate .
Climbers: Up 8 to 26 The successful soul sound ofVesta Williams
with "ONCE BITTEN, TWICESHY". Up 9 to 24, a pure piece of
harmlessbubblegum by Taffy, "I LOVE MY RADIO". Up 14 to23 "IOU" by
Freez. Re-released and only half asgood. Up 12 to 16 "WALKING DOWN
YOURSTREET" The Bangles. Their Lp "DIFFERENTLIGHT" finally entered
the top 10 after 30 weeks onthe chart. It made a similar
breakthrough in the U.S.after 50 weeks on the chart! It's the
biggest sellingalbum ever in the U.K. by an American girl group
andat 300,000 copies is quite an improvement on theirprevious Lp
"ALL OVER THE PLACE" whichpeaked at number 86! Up 17 to 15 "DOWN
TOEARTH" by Curiosity Killed The Cat. A lot of hype(Andy Warhol
directed video, etc.) and precious littleexperience. This is hooky,
satiny and smooth. Up 16to 14 "THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE" by Siouxsie
AndThe Banshees. Rapidly emerging as their mostcommercially
successful sound since 1983's "DEARPRUDENCE", ironically also a
cover.Recommended to ALT and CHR. Up 18 to 13 "RAT INTHE KITCHEN"
by UB40. Fab! Up 17 to 12"SOMETHING IN MY HOUSE" by Dead Or
Alive. The formula still works well for Mr. Burns. Don'targue with
success. Add it! Up 13 to II"WASTELAND" by The Mission. As
stressedbefore, their audience here is a perfect crossover ofgothic
and metal. Saw them perform last week.Magic. Up 18 to 10 "REAL WILD
CHILD" by IggyPop. Iggy Pop, Julian Cope, the wild and
eccentricmaking a comeback? More of this please. Up 6 to 9"IT
DIDN'T MATTER" The Style Council. Thestandard Council sound that is
obviously keepingtheir fans happy. After 4 weeks at number one
JackieWilson is bumped by another dark horse "JACKYOUR BODY" the
apparently extremely cool, but tome totally inane, latest funk
sound from Steve "Silk"Hurley. Entire Lyric: "Jack your body.
Ja-ja-ja-ja-jack your body." More musings next week. Cheerio.

PaRD REPORT RADIO COMMENTSRad Messick, WDIZ, Orlando
To eliminate confusion and to set the recordstraight, WDIZ has
signed Jeff PollackCommunications to consult the station, along
withBurkhart/Abrams/Douglas and Elliot. We're looking toreach all
time new high goals in 1987 and are tryingto draw upon as many
different resources as possibleto reach our expectations and
dominate the market.WDIZ has been here 16 years and keeps getting
betterevery year. There is no reason why we shouldn't bethe #1
station in town. We're pulling out all the stopsin '87.
Russ Mottla, WAAF, WorcesterWhat a great month for new music!
Let's start the
list with a completely reactive AOR record, HankWilliams, Jr.
with Van Haien, "My Name IsBocephus". We're already getting phones
on therecord and it seems to be reacting as fast as anythingwe've
added in the last six months.... I also love theJulian Cope, Pseudo
Echo, and folks, ConcreteBlonde's "Still In Hollywood" is the
reactive firsttrack from that album.... WAAF is happy to
presentBruce Hornsby And The Range for a Valentine'sDay show at the
legendary Orpheum Theater inBoston. They still buy their power from
the subway --the sucker runs on DC.
Loris Lane, KFMX, LubbockI want to give big thanks to Frank
Palombi from
Capitol for helping us with the Iron Maiden show. Our backstage
winners were ecstatic. Thanks, too, toBruce Dickenson (better luck
next time on the soccerfield), Vinnie Vincent and Bobby Rock for
dropping bythe studio. Maiden puts on an incredible show thatleaves
you wild eyed and reeling. The special effectsthemselves are worth
the ticket price.... There is ahuge buzz on the phones about the
new SammyHagar single.... Meanwhile, I'm still pushing forCrowded
House and Concrete Blonde.
Brian Taylor, WAPL, APPLETONWith Rick on vacation, it's like old
home week on
the telephone. A pleasant change to again be hearingMcGathy's
jokes and Danny Buch's hockey sagas....Bon Jovi continues to
outdistance anything else onthe air right now. After selling out a
large concertdate in two hours, Bon Jovi fever is
runningrampant.... Just when you thought MN was on theskids, it's
interesting to note the positive effect that ithas had on a couple
of new acts, particularlyEurope and World Party. The retail and
requestnumbers show that the added exposure hasreinforced my
playlist in the market, long before theCHR competition gets the big
holler. Let's hope theHip Clip of the week does the same for
JulianCope.... Sammy Hagar's vocals have become anAOR staple.
That's why it's nice to have some freshnew vinyl to throw into the
recipe.... The Santana didnot strike me as being quite as obvious.
However, certainly an artist of this caliber teaming up withanother
veteran like Buddy Miles deserves to beexposed.... Also on the new
music front, we're givinga shot to Brighton Rock. Following on the
heels ofsuccess from bands like Cinderella and Bon Jovi,Brighton
Rock has the looks, the raw -edged sound, and, of course, the
management to go a long way.Good luck to Steve and the band for a
successfulcareer.... And now that it's official, congrats and
bestof luck to the Good Doctor, Barry Lyons.
Erin Riley, WMMR, PhiladelphiaJanuary is always the time for
fresh new sounds
and there is a lot of them around. I like the JulianCope record
more every time I listen to it. It has agreat rock and roll
attitude.... Another guy with a greatrock and roll attitude visited
Philadelphia last week,Iggy Pop. I think Iggy summed it all up when
heleft the stage after his encore saying "Thanks forhaving me. I
know I'm strange, but thanks for havingme anyway." Iggy put on a
killer show opening for thePretenders. He still does some heavy
gyrating, butat least now he does it with his clothes on.
Trulyinspiring.... Another band that's always a fave with meis the
Psychedelic Furs. They toured throughPhiladelphia in between the
recording and release ofthis new album, and we were treated to many
of thenew songs. I distinctly remember "Heartbreak Beat"among my
favorites.... For those of you who want toplay the Bruce Willis
record but are at a loss forwhat to play, I strongly suggest
"Jackpot". It's thesong he did last night on the American Music
Awards. It's got some terrific harp playing, and it's impossibleto
keep from dancing when you hear it.
Ron Diaz, WYNF, TampaThe powerful, rhythmic sound of the
Spoons
"Bridges Over Borders" has me testifying. I like theway this
song is structured. It builds to a wildfrenzied hook, then follows
through with greatinstrumental breaks.... "Shakin Shakin Shakes"
sureis fun stuff. Nothing fancy, just sing along and danceyour ass
off to it. This type of music is happening ina big way and this is
another fine example.... The newStallone flick won't be the one
everybody will betalking about at the Cannes Film Festival, but
"WinnerTakes It All", the soundtrack piece from Messrs.Hagar and
Van Halen, is all right with me. Sammyon guitar, Eddie on bass, and
Giorgio Moroderbehind the knobs --what the funk is happeninghere/II
With the incredibly huge success of BonJovi, it's time for another
track --"Never SayGoodbye". It's already generating calls. It's a
greatrock ballad from an album that looks like it's headedfor ten
Gregg Allman's no angel, but the boysure can wail. I had a chance
to listen to Gregg'snew material a few months ago and was left with
avery strong impression. And after hearing "Angel"again, I believe
my first impression was right. This isquality stuff.
Christina, WPLR, New HavenSales on Robert Cray, Georgia
Satellites and
Europe have really kicked in.... Colin Hay isstealing the
phones.... Bob Geldof and Bon Jovimust think alike. Instead of
Tommy and Gina, it'sTerry and Julie. "Love Like a Rocket" is
a...gosh...it's a really good song. Have you listened?....And
Santana's "Veracruz"? Love it!! Is this coolfunk or what? Funny,
though, it hasn't startedraining.
Steve Becker, WKFM, SyracuseFirst of all, love them Giants!!
Syracuse went wild
because of the connection with Joe Morris, who wentto Syracuse
University. Let's see if we can repeat fornext year. Are we talking
dynasty?.... I want to sendout some kudos to Diamond David Lee
Roth, alongwith Paul Childs and Jeff Criden, for his
excellentpromotion and concert. Dave can always have thekey to the
city in this town.... Musically, LouGramm's "Midnight Blue" is
scorching on theairwaves. The guy may be from the next town over
inRochester, but the way this guy sings we'll considerhim a native
son, too.

we didn't add Iggy Pop this week he would becalling A&M's
J.B. Brenner home." Iggy's "Real WildChild" is open because I was
afraid that the home Mr.Big was referring to was Baltimore. We must
