In today’s crowded yachting market, buyers are desperate to find the best of the deals whilst sellers are fighting just to get their yachts seen.

But the presence of so many superyachts for sale or charter on the market doesn’t mean buyers and charterers are finding the right yacht at the right price. Today, the history of a yacht and the reasons for its sale or charter are two factors playing a crucial role in the process.

Equally, a flooded marketplace doesn’t mean sellers need to feel pressured into selling their yacht at less than its real worth.

That’s why working with an informed, experienced and results-driven brokerage house like YPI makes a difference. You are not alone. Expertise, market intelligence and well-honed negotiating skills help clients get the right result – and often the chance to visit the very best yachts BEFORE they come to the market.

So, for those already in the mood for some yacht shopping, we are pleased to present this unique selection of some of the world’s finest…all available through YPI.

And for those happy with their existing yachts? Enjoy every moment of pleasure she brings you and your family…but look after her. Consider the benefits and savings to be enjoyed by having her managed. Look into chartering your yacht – a busy charter season keeps the crew in great shape and can generate some excellent revenue.

well-maintained yachts always sell – that’s guaranteed peace of mind and pleasure all wrapped up in one!

Enjoy our YPI Selection and I wish you and your family another great year of yachting.

In 2009 the demand for charter nose-dived, bookings were in decline, there were more charter yachts on the market than ever before and stories of rates being negotiated down by as much as 40% or 50% abounded. Fortunately, 2010 saw an increase in the number of charters around the world and brought an end to the panic price reductions of the previous year. however, it was still a far cry from the pre-crisis years of 2007 and early 2008.

Booking habits have also changed. while pre-crisis many charters were booked anything from two months to a year ahead of time, many post-crisis bookings are last minute – some even calling up just days before they want to go.

“we want the best for all our customers,” explains YPI head of Charter, Fiona Maureso. “If they are owners offering their yachts for charter, it’s all about having a clear understanding of their expectations as well as their flexibility. For clients looking to book a charter, we are keen to convey the message that the sooner they start planning, the greater the choice of yacht, destinations and dates they will have. It’s not just about getting the best deal, it’s also about peace of mind, knowing they haven’t had to compromise and that their charter will invariably be more successful as a result.”

The greatest danger for charter clients in the past couple of years has been the tendency of some yacht owners to try to reduce running costs by cutting back on crew or maintenance budgets. YPI Charter has been monitoring this carefully. “we have steered

our clients only towards yachts we know are well-run and properly crewed,” explains Fiona. “we are proud that the owners of yachts in our fleet understand the importance of this philosophy.”

News of a bad charter travels fast and at a time when charter clients have an impressive array of yachts to choose from, a yacht’s reputation is paramount. “It takes years to build client trust,” concludes Fiona, “but just one poorly managed charter to lose it. That’s something we at YPI Charter work hard to avoid and our track record stands as testimony to our success.”

2010 in some ways heralded the kick-start to the yachting market that observers had been patiently waiting for since the end of 2008. whilst volumes remained similar to 2009 – around 190 yachts launched in 2010 compared to 197 in 2009; 54 new-build contracts signed in 2009 and again in 2010, 205 yachts sold in 2010 compared to 194 in 2009 – the overall sales revenue generated in 2010 (based on asking prices) was up on 2009 by over 38% finishing just under EUR 2.5 billion. Some of the revenue increase was attributable to a handful of large yacht deals but the general feeling is that well-maintained, quality yachts are selling and for prices a little more consistent than the panic numbers of 2008 and 2009.

The team at YPI Brokerage, YPI Group’s specialist sales and new construction division, which incorporates the successful YPI Sailing, forecast that 2011 could be the last time we see the huge price shifts witnessed over the past few years. “There’s still room for manoeuvre,” explains YPI Group CEO, Bertrand vogèle. “But many of the yachts placed on the market just ahead of the crisis or in the early part of it, have now bottomed out. Many of the best deals have been snapped up or the yachts themselves withdrawn from sale.”

with an average of 30 superyachts coming to the market every month, the choice of yachts for sale has never been greater, but most brokers stress the need for prudence. “we track the history of all yachts on the market,” explains YPI Broker, will Allen. “Some represent genuine deals we are keen to ensure our own clients are made aware of, but some have been around for a long time or need an awful lot of work on them. That’s not to say they can’t be great deals, but the work needs to be better factored into the price and right now what sells a yacht is its price or its pedigree.”

For those wishing to sell, quality yachts are selling and buyers are keen not only to seek out the best deals in terms of price but also in terms of the uniqueness of a yacht. “Sailing yachts have enjoyed a renewed level of interest over the past three or four years,” explains head of YPI Sailing, will Bishop. “And whilst the number of sailing boats purchased in the 40–70 metre mark is still way below that of the motor yachts, the choice and the quality right now is unparalleled.”

when it comes to building new, confidence in the well-known and proven yards has grown. “It’s a good time now to consider a new-build,” explains Sales and New Construction Broker, Matt Albert. “The second-hand market has more choice than ever but the best yards have restructured, re-organised and come back with some amazing offers not out of desperation but because they see this as the new way forward.”

So it seems the aftershocks of September 2008 may still be resonating for buyers and sellers alike, however, the portfolios have been re-arranged, the wheat sorted from the chaff and those with a genuine passion for yachting have much to gain by getting in now whilst those last remnants of uncertainty linger on.

YPI INTELLIGENCE:A NEW YACHTING MARKETThe traps and the treats of the yachting business today. After the upward swing of 2010, the superyacht market (yachts above 24-metres) seems to be settling into a new status quo. As the cries of “never to be repeated” and “unique opportunity” still rally, the teams from YPI Brokerage, YPI Management and YPI Charter join forces to guide you through the traps and the treats of a new yachting order.

Conceived as a world cruiser for an experienced yacht owner, WILLIAM TAI was built with no expense too great and no detail too insignificant. Her relatively reduced draft and balanced ketch rig, with twin engines, is an ideal cruising configuration.

WILLIAM TAI is now in the best condition since her launch and a new owner can be confident they will own a unique vessel of undisputable quality and grace. She has been extensively upgraded throughout during a recent comprehensive refit period.

• Finalist at the 2010 World Superyachts Awards • Recent multi-million-Euro refit at Royal Huisman

Length: 47m (154ft 2in)Build: Benetti, 28 months from signingGuests: 12 / Cabins: 5Crew: 9Price: EUR 28,000,000

The AMELS 177-YN458 with 650 gross tons of volume and 12 guests in six cabins has all the characteristics of the ‘perfect’ sized yacht. The striking design drawn by Tim Heywood and interior styling by Laura Sessa are absolutely stunning.

YPI Brokerage are delighted to have sold AMELS Hull 458 acting on behalf of buyer and seller, both being private clients of YPI.

• Outstanding 19-metre long sundeck • Peerless AMELS quality

The modern, dynamic style of the new IMAGINATION 47M line heralds the future image of large Benetti superyachts. The exterior design by Stefano Natucci gives fluidity whilst the highly sophisticated François Zuretti interior is both light and airy.

The 47-metre optimised hull entirely in aluminium provides excellent performance and a long range. Meanwhile, the bulbous bow enables the yacht to reach high speeds of circa 23.5 knots.

• Optimised aluminium hull • Innovative new design from Benetti

ShIPYARD FOCUS:

FEADSHIP

A FEW WORDS FROM BAS NEDERPELT:DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARkETING“Feadship is the best choice for owners who do not want to compromise on comfort, quality, safety or detail and who value the possibility of customising their yacht. Time and time again, Feadship have proven to be a solid investment and continue to have a high re-sale value even through economic downturns.”

how times have changed.

“Over the past two years there have been fewer orders for new builds as a result of lower overall demand, the number of pre-owned yachts on the market – not to mention the number of new yachts being offered for sale whilst under construction. That being said, there is still a strong demand for true custom yachts of high quality. More reputable builders have a better chance of securing orders than shipyards that are weaker and less professional.”

Feadship, the Netherlands-based co-operation between the two shipyards koninklijke De vries Scheepsbouw and Royal van Lent and De voogt Naval Architects, has always been synonymous with the highest levels of craftsmanship. with combined roots dating back to 1849, its claim of ‘quality without compromise’ has real pedigree to sustain it.

In the 1950s, Feadship conquered the American market and over time new markets opened up in the Middle East and beyond as word spread and clients of discernment naturally came to these Dutch masters to realise their dream yachts. But Feadship has never been satisfied with past laurels and has remained at the forefront of the industry by continuous innovation in both technology and design. Indeed De voogt regularly conduct brain-storming sessions in order to stay ahead.

Recent developments have included the introduction of two custom-series options, the SL39 and F45, which have brought Feadship quality into a new area of the market. Meanwhile, the ultra efficient axe-bow hull shape has been spectacularly incorporated into PREDATOR. Feadship has also embraced the challenge of meeting the demands of eco-conscious owners. Their latest Future Concept, BREATHE, which incorporates a natural ventilation system and ‘intelligent propulsion’ system, imitates some of nature’s finest ideas and leaves one... well, breathless.

Greater speeds, reduced fuel consumption, lighter interiors, higher ceilings, new-generation technologies... the primary requirements of clients continue to evolve; but whatever direction the design of superyachts takes, Feadship, with its foundation of a 200-strong global fleet, and unique vision for the future, will be there and leading from the front.

DESIGNER FOCUS:

ZURETTIFRANçOIS ZURETTI: ThE ADDED vALUE CLIENTS GET FROM USING ZURETTI INTERIOR DESIGNERS.

Some major projects in the works for Zuretti:> 62-metre motor yacht: art deco contemporary, MY SOFIA.> 42-metre motor yacht: classic style with colonial inspiration, MY JOHANNA.> 40-metre motor yacht: contemporary and zen, close to minimalist.> Two mega yacht projects (confidential).> The conception of the ‘Benetti Class’ series including: Tradition 32-metre, Classic Supreme 40-metre, Crystal 42-metre, vision Supreme 50-metre and semi-custom yachts Imagination 47-metres.

For each range we elaborate two interior styles: classic and contemporary.

I don’t think I’ve created one particular ‘style’ but I take steps to successfully complete a project by listening to the client and catering to their wishes. It is important that the style is present, whether it’s classic, contemporary or minimalist and that it provides the client with the emotion they are striving to achieve. From there, our involvement becomes technical and detailed. we create the interiors within the budget supplied by the client and the naval shipyard and we elaborate technical drawings and specifications that allow an accurate calculation. This way we simplify the process and avoid misunderstandings.

I design and follow up on all our interiors and take part in every coordination meeting with the shipyard and, because owners put their entire trust in my capabilities, I am able to make the necessary decisions on the spot.

Over the years we have completed more than 50 custom yacht interiors, ranging from 30-80 metres. As a result, the Zuretti brand continues to be a strong selling point for the promotion and the sale of a yacht.

1. What is the importance for you to work as a family-run business?

we can hold a board of directors meeting each and every time we have lunch or dinner at home! But it is not just that, of course. To us ‘family’ are also the members of our staff who put all their passion and energy into what they do. A product based on these values is an extremely competitive one.

2. What makes Fipa Group stand out compared to other shipyards?

It is quite naturally our ability to produce custom products, offer a range of varied products and the fact we have a large number of clients who have given us their trust over the years.

3. What is the biggest change you have noticed in your clients since 2008?

The number of younger clients has dramatically decreased. we have kept the older clients, those with more solid and stable fortunes.

4. What are the major projects that your group is currently working on?

There are several including: CBI 52, MAIORA 47 and AB 166, which we consider an “avant-garde” project, filled with technical and aesthetic innovations. we are also focussing on the restyling of smaller models.

5. What has been your biggest success?

Each and every boat coming out of our shipyard is a success. They all are a success because they have all been completed based on the clients’ specific requirements. All of these boats are different from one another yet they are the result of careful study and research and much effort. when I see them perfectly arranged on the trawler ready to leave our premises for their christening, I always experience the same feeling: an immense joy that can still make my heart swell with pride.

EXUMA EThEREALAmbassadors of the ‘green tech’ philosophy, the Owners of ETHEREAL wanted their yacht to be the quietest, most eco-friendly vessel afloat. They commissioned Ron Holland to design her highly efficient hull shape and favoured a hybrid electric-diesel propulsion system. They also installed lithium-ion batteries that are charged when the yacht is under sail, allowing ETHEREAL to run her systems using stored electrical power.

The Owners are delighted with their innovative yacht, her stability, grace and the quiet pleasure of sailing on her. Conscious of the need to preserve the ocean environment, they are helping to create Marine Protected Areas around the world. Having enjoyed their first year cruising Europe and the Caribbean, they are now planning to explore more of the world’s oceans, integrating their use of ETHEREAL with their work on marine conservation.

ETHEREAL will be available in the Pacific during Summer 2011.

50m / 164ft / Perini Navi, launched 2010Charter rate from: EUR 175,000 per week.

Voted ‘Green Yacht of the Year’ and awarded the ‘Green Plus Platinum Certificate’ at the 2010 Monaco Yacht Show, EXUMA is the first motor yacht to be launched from the Perini Navi shipyard. Her striking Philippe Briand hull design ensures optimum performance whilst limiting her fuel consumption to just 250 litres per hour at 12 knots. Using fuel with a low sulphur content and marine-friendly anti-fouling paint reduces her environmental impact further still, as do her innovative onboard recycling and garbage treatment systems.

Designed and equipped for exploration, EXUMA is venturing out into the most beautiful and remote areas of the world. Her itinerary for Spring/Summer 2011 includes the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Mexico and Baja California, Cabo San Lucas, French Polynesia, Bora Bora, Fiji and Tonga.

YPI MANAGEMENT:

WHEN EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING

A full list of YPI Management services is provided overleaf. For more information Telephone: +377 99 99 97 97 / Email: [email protected] / www.ypigroup.com

Growing up near Palermo on italy’s southern coast, Marco Lo Cicero was never allowed to play on the road at the back of his house. The beach and the Mediterranean lying at the front, however, meant he didn’t much care. A PADi qualified diver at 16, italian Coast Guard engineer at 19, captain at 25 and veteran of over 13 vessels, 31-year-old Marco now works as Assistant Yacht Manager with the team in YPi Management. “Marco’s life passion is the sea and boats,” says head of YPi Management, Franc Jansen. “he also has a very analytical mind, which is invaluable given the vital technical support he provides for our team.”

Marco supplies information on everything from isM and isPs to audits, drills and flag states for all YPi Yacht Managers, including captain of almost 30 years, Stephen Heads. With a degree in Engineering science from Warwick University in England, stephen was managing multi-million-dollar civil engineering projects around the world at the age of 25 before a trip to Antigua Race Week changed everything. “i was asked to captain a 65-foot sailing yacht for Transatlantic delivery,” he explains. “No mean feat with only a Davies sextant and a Casio watch to guide me back then. Before i knew it, my engineering experience got me a job as Mate Engineer on another yacht and then i started getting more captain work managing yacht refit operations and new-builds…it was great.”

Thirty years is a long time to be at sea and the extent of stephen’s experience is obvious. “You can’t be taught the sort of things you pick up at sea,” he says.

“i worked with a number of management companies over the years – the best understood what i needed and delivered…the worst tried to tell me my job.”

Providing a full yacht management service means providing support and know-how on all aspects of yachting. YPi Management has four specialist marine accountants, a wealth of legal and insurance talent, new-build and refit specialists and published Naval Architect and Designer, Lisbon-born, Paulo Bernardes-Silva. “My interest in boat design started at the age of seven when i was sailing with my father,” recalls Paulo. “he would convert fishing boats and put saloons into them. i loved what he did.”

Determined to become a Naval Architect, Paulo headed for England hot on the trail of his yacht designer idol, Tony Castro. “When i first met him it was like talking to the Pope,” he smiles. Paulo won the chance to work with Castro before gaining still more experience in sail-making, yacht fitting and CAD draftsmanship through a wide variety of industries including Oil and Gas. A fully accredited Naval Architect with the Royal institute, Paulo had his own successful design business until Palmer Johnson came knocking. “They wanted me to set up and run their new state-of-the-art design office in the UK,” he explains. “That was an amazing experience

which eventually brought me to YPi and its new-build, refit and design work.”

Two of YPi Management’s senior figures come from a country well renowned for its luxury yacht building – holland. Divisional head Franc Jansen and Yacht Manager Patrick Renar both graduated with top qualifications in marine engineering and ship navigation from the highly respected maritime university in Flushing. Both went to sea as engineers on some of the most technically advanced luxury cruise liners of the time, and both qualified as Technical superintendants – commercial shipping’s equivalent to yacht managers.

“As engineer on tankers and cruise ships, i was responsible for the maintenance of deck machinery, engine room equipment and safety material on vessels fitted with state-of-the-art diesel electric propulsion,” explains Patrick. “Then i went into commercial management overseeing the technical operations and maintenance of three Ro-Ro vessels and car-carriers before eventually joining the Lloyds Register.” in the 11 years Patrick worked with Lloyds he was Plan Approval surveyor, carrying out classification (hull, machinery and electrical) and statutory surveys; senior Consultant Marine Engineer with the company’s globally respected consultancy department and both Engineering Design Appraisal surveyor and senior surveyor. “We provided technical advice and design appraisals for marine machinery and piping systems using stress analysis techniques. We evaluated system torsional, axial and lateral vibration

characteristics and studied shaft alignments for marine propulsion systems – all experience and know-how invaluable in private yachting today.”

Franc worked his way through the ranks on cargo and cruise ships picking up an impressive Msc in Maintenance and safety Management along the way. After seven years at sea he went ashore as a Technical Manager for the offshore industry. Working for RiNA, he was an Onboard surveyor, surveying ships and testing and certifying complex marine equipment. But it was his time as Technical Manager for a series of London-based shipping companies that really gave Franc the know-how and expertise to run commercial ships efficiently and effectively. he was responsible for ship repair operations all over the world and supervised a series of important new-build projects across Asia. it was this invaluable experience that eventually led Franc to private yachting and YPi. “The skills we learned from such a highly disciplined industry as shipping are in very short supply in private yachting,” admits Franc. “i believe yacht owners deserve the same level of competence and professionalism, especially today.”

The YPi Management team is one of the highest educated and most experienced anywhere in the world. “And that’s the way it should be,” Franc concludes proudly. “Because that’s the real secret behind successful yacht management – it’s the people: their experience, marine discipline…and of course,” and now he smiles, “their love for messing about in boats.”

YPI CREW QUALiTY CREW.

PROPERLY VETTED.

The first step is to understand exactly what the client is looking for. “It is not enough to know what post a yacht owner wants to fill,” explains Laurence. “For the placement to work in the medium to long term we like to understand a bit more about the crew and what problems or situations the owner may be trying to resolve.” For Laurence, a professional recruitment consultant from the highly competitive medical industry, this type of logic is almost second nature. “So many in the yachting industry honestly think that recruiting crew is just about having some yachting experience and going through the Cvs. when you’ve seen the costly crew turn-over we’ve seen, you’d understand the flaw in that logic.”

For Laurence and her team of trained consultants successful recruitment is about finding the right people with the right skill-set, personality and outlook for each specific post. “You can have three experienced captains in front of you and yet only one is suitable for that yacht,” explains Laurence. “That’s why it’s so important to talk to candidates.”

with YPI Crew, the filtering process doesn’t end with the Cv, it begins. “Successful crew placement is a two-way process…both sides need to benefit. we like to get to know our candidates outside of their credentials – to find out what interests and skills they have, what types of people they get on with and how they see their own careers developing.”

with owners searching for ways to maximise the return on the time and money they invest in yachting, Laurence is adamant that quality recruitment makes the difference. “Our clients are not just paying us to read a few Cvs and pass on notes,” she says. “They rely on us to filter candidates with reference and certification checks, as well as police profile checks if necessary. They even ask us to help out with the interview process itself. In short,” she concludes, “owners trust us to get on with the job because they know we go the extra mile on their behalf.”

And that, we believe, is a reputation well worth guarding.
