JUSTbrilliant GUIDES jbg the welcome to yarra valley and dandenong ranges
Apr 02, 2016
Explore the Yarra Valley and its refined wines
and local produce. A hop, skip and a jump and
the majestic forrests and fern glades of the
Dandenong Ranges offer the perfect getaway
from it all.
Once upon a time, the Yarra Valley was a valuable source of timber and, in 1859 when gold was discovered at New Chum Creek, settlers rushed to the area in search of their fortunes. These days, the Yarra Valley is renowned for its world class wineries and lush hinterlands. It’s a place where visitors can relax and completely unwind.
The Dandenong Ranges was first explored in 1839 by the botanist, Daniel Bunce, who on arrival to Melbourne was attracted to the distant mountains 40 km’s away. Bunce set out with a party of Aboriginals to explore the area known as Corhanwarrabul meaning ‘the creek of the kangaroo’. Bunce and the rest of the party climbed to the top of what is today known as Burke’s Lookout. Once harvested for its timber, the Dandenong Ranges is now celebrated for its beauty and tranquility.
This guide provides information on wineries, markets, parks and attractions in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges region. Enjoy, relax and unwind.

yarra glenSituated amongst the Yarra Valley’s finest producers, Yarra Glen is the place to sample fresh regional produce at local eateries and producers. Drop into the Yarra Valley Grand Hotel, a historic boutique hotel with ornate charm: comfy lounges throughout, a beautiful dining room, a huge bistro area and sunny beer deck. The pub focuses on supporting local music and so bands play here three times per week.
Alternatively, visit Yarra Valley Dairy where you can taste and buy sumptuous handmade cheeses. For more details, please visit www.yvd.com.au.
healesvilleHealesville, 14km’s east of Yarra Glen, is a picturesque town boasting an array of things to see and do. Families can visit the Healesville Sanctuary, which protects some of Australia’s most unique species. Situated on Badger Creek Road, it’s open 9am–5pm 7 days a week.
For art lovers, be sure to check out TarraWarra Museum of Art located at 311 Healesville-Yarra Glen Road. For more information on current exhibitions, please visit twma.com.au/exhibitions.
toolangiApproximately 19km’s north of Healesville, Toolangi is probably most famous for the historical fact that it was home to the famous poet, CJ Dennis. Dennis was fascinated by the area and was subsequently inspired to write such classics as ‘The Moods Of Ginger Mick’. The Singing Gardens was named after the last poem that the poet wrote. Today, visitors are made welcome at The Singing Garden where there are four acres of garden that lead to the fresh Yea River to meander through.
warburtonLocated 34km’s from Healesville on the banks of the Yarra River, Warburton was founded as a gold mining and saw milling centre in the 1860s. This quaint township has a busy events calendar. For more information, please visit www.warburtoninfo.com/warburton_event_calender.html.
For more information on wineries, parks, markets and attractions in the Yarra Valley, please refer to our sections on these within this guide. For further information, visit www.experienceyarravalley.com.au.
Welcome to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges
Today, the Yarra Valley is one of the world’s finest wine producing regions. Taking advantage of the rich soils, high rainfall and warm summers, the area is a haven for wine producers and wine lovers alike. Over 50 wineries are open for tasting and sales, which is probably one of the reasons why the area is Victoria’s most visited wine region. There are plenty of other great things to see and do in the Yarra Valley so take advantage of all that’s on offer.

olindaOlinda is a popular destination for visitors and when you arrive in this quaint little village you’ll understand why. Surrounded by some of the most stunning gardens in Australia, visitors are privy to a number of private and public gardens open for tours. The National Rhododendron Gardens, situated on The Georgian Road, are spectacular; opened 10am - 5pm daily, with free entry there’s no excuse not to visit.
sassafrasNot far down the road from Olinda you’ll discover Sassafras. Sassafras is the shopping precinct of the Dandenong Ranges with shops offering antiques, retro clothing, giftware, homewares and specialty bathroom products. Miss Marple Tea Rooms, one of the oldest icons in the area, serves Devonshire Teas so make sure you stop by and spoil yourself.
emeraldSouth east of the Dandenong Ranges, and just over 15km’s from Sassafras, you’ll venture upon Emerald. Home to Emerald Lake, Emerald is a bustling township boasting a number of great restaurants, cafés, picnic areas and antique shops. You can also do a spot of trout fishing at Emerald Lake Park. If you are over 18, you will require a recreational fishing licence, which is easily purchased for around $25 at most tackle shops. You can also check out and marvel at the ingenuity of the Emerald Lake Model Railway situated at the corner of Emerald Lake Road and Elizabeth Court. Emerald is the major disembarking station for Puffing Billy, a historic steam train built at the turn of the century. Now a major tourist attraction, Puffing Billy still traverses the mountain district running every day of the year except Christmas day. Call 9757 0700 to book a sentimental journey for you and the family along this 24.5 km operating museum.
Visitors marvel at the unspoiled beauty of the Dandenong Ranges as the hills come alive with the many artists, quaint eateries and boutique shops that the area boasts. The walking tracks, gardens and general ambience of the region offer a natural retreat from the busyness of life.
Welcome to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges
the dandenong ranges
olindaOlinda is a popular destination for visitors and when you arrive in this quaint little village you’ll understand why. Surrounded by some of the most stunning gardens in Australia, visitors are privy to a number of private and public gardens open for tours. The National Rhododendron Gardens, situated on The Georgian Road, are spectacular; opened 10am-5pm daily, with free entry there’s no excuse not to visit.
sassafrasNot far down the road from Olinda you’ll discover Sassafras.
If you are over 18, you will require a recreational fishing licence, which is easily purchased at most tackle shops.
Call 9757 0700 to book a sentimental journey for you and the family along this 24.5 km operating museum.
cockatooA further 8km’s east of Emerald sits Cockatoo. Cockatoo, which was devastated in the Ash Wednesday fires (16th February 1983), was founded in 1875 as a farming town and, today, remains a small community of friendly locals. Although this is a small place, the genuine, hospitable nature of the locals will make you feel welcome. There are a multitude of drives around Cockatoo and some good walking tracks are found off Bailey Road and Wright Road. From Cockatoo, you can drive north west to Macclesfield and try your hand at trout fishing.
gembrookGembrook, said to be the gateway to the country, is a tranquil township. Located 7 km’s north of Gembrook, Kurth Kiln Park stretches across to Hoddles Creek and is full of interesting sites. There are also many walking tracks here suitable to fill an entire day. Another noteworthy place in Kurth Kiln Park is Ship Rock Falls, located near Beenak Road on the Launching Place – Gembrook Road.
Visitors marvel at the unspoiled beauty of the Dandenong Ranges as the hills come alive with the many artists, quaint eateries and boutique shops that the area boasts. The walking tracks, gardens and general ambience of the region offer a natural retreat from the busyness of life.
