Vol. CXV No. VI August 2017 I t is August at the Milford Yacht Club, and the sailing season is in full swing. The jun- ior sailors are attending regattas at neighboring clubs, after having successfully host- ed the annual Optisail Regatta on July 26, 2017. Our membership can take pride in the efforts and accomplishments of our junior sailors. Many of the Opti sailors are involved in the end of season competition to win the prestigious Dicker Award. The Dicker is awarded to the winner of an Opti series in the name of the late F.H. “Dick” Hovey, P.C., long-time Junior Sailing Master. The new adults participating in the Summer of Sailing program are enjoying their new found sailing skills. It is a wonderful program organized by Fleet Captain, Doug Jones, P.C., but run by many of the seasoned sailors of the Club. It is a great opportunity for the new sailors to learn and get the sailing bug. The PHRF sailors begin the month with the Milford Invitational Boardman Cup regatta on August 5, 2017. It is a well-attended event, with great competition between area clubs. August also brings the annual MYC Club Cruise and Rendezvous. This year ’s event is hosted by Tina and Bud Franke at Brewer Essex Island Marina from August 18th through 20th. Saturday night ’s Island Sunset Party will feature entertainment provided by the Caribbean steel drum duo, Steel Dreams. The Island Sunset Party is also available to those that want to come over land and meet the cruisers at the marina. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate, on behalf of the membership, Josh Revkin and Eivind Melleby, for winning the 2017 Star World Championship. The Championship took place in Troense, Denmark, in a series that concluded on July 8, 2017. Josh and his dad, Dr. James Revkin, were both active in the Star fleet at MYC. Josh recently relocated, but his dad, Jim, remains a member of the Star fleet. Again congratulations to Josh and Eivind and we all wish them success at the 2017 SSL Finals, in Nassau, Bahamas December 4th through 9th. I also want to thank all of the MYC volunteers that help keep all of the sailing programs running and bringing great fun to the Club. Finally, on behalf of the Milford Yacht Club family, I want to congratulate longtime member and volunteer, Nell Moll, for receiving the first Distinguished Citizen of Milford Award from Mayor Benjamin G. Blake on July 27, 2017, for her tireless efforts in working behind the scenes for the City of Milford. Remember, there is plenty of season left! 2017 Milford Yacht Club Invitational
Challenge for the Boardman Cup Saturday, August 5th
The Milford Yacht Club’s premier big boat event is just around the corner and is celebrating its 31st anniver-sary. All members are invited to join the sailors and enjoy this great racing tradition. The tradition began in 1986 with the Milford Invitational Regatta. The idea to add the challenge for the Boardman Cup was con-ceived by then Rear Commodore, Ed Becker, the PRO for this year’s event. At the time, MYC purchased many of its trophies from the Boardman Silver Company in Meriden, Connecticut. The company’s generous owner was an MYC member and R.C. Becker approached him about creating a magnificent pewter trophy for this new facet of the race. The challenge and the cup were named for its donor.
A blow-out post-race party will feature live music by Sidekick, food, drink and merriment. $5 Dark n’ Stormys
All Members Welcome $15.00++
