Two landmark exhibitions of private collections of Japanese art-the Powers Collection, shown at Harvard's Fogg Art Museum in I970, and the Burke Collection, exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in I975 - provided early inspiration and much needed scholarship. These exhibitions both presented encyclopedic collections of Japanese art. But Messrs. Barnet and Burto found that their own interest centered on a uniquely Japanese aesthetic, often summed up in a single word: Zen. "Zen Painting and Calligraphy:' an exhibition organized in I970 by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and featuring major loans from Japan, played a key role in broadening their taste.
