Poster commemorates the successes of the 369th Infantry Regiment, aka the Harlem Hellfighters, an all-black unit from New York that was the first American unit to engage the Germans on the battlefield. The unit served 191 days in combat, more than any other. The two figures in front are probably Corporal Henry Jackson and Private Needham Roberts, the first Americans to receive the French Croix de Guerre for heroism in war (196 other members of the unit received the award). They engaged the Germans in hand-to-hand combat when their ammunition ran out.. The unit was also credited with introducing jazz to the French.

Edith Louisa Cavell: British nurse famous for the generosity of her care: saved the lives of all who suffered, regardless of what side of the war they served on. She helped 200 Allied soldiers escape from German occupied Belgium. She was caught, convicted, and executed by firing squad on October 12, 1915. According to popular myth, she fainted before the execution and was shot by a German officer.

“The voice climbs/grows from the ravaged land, the destroyed orchards, the burned factories, the annihilated villages, the collapsed or gasping walls, the moving solitude of the ghostly cities. The voice is neither ripping/harrowing nor poetic nor shocking; it is a sort of silent or tenacious thing that nobody had ever suspected: the claim/demand to make right [Droit is another polysemous terms].  The decisive reality [or “key truth”) of facts cries out for reparation/repair.”
