Why this old tale?

Hänsel und Gretel was first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812, but

versions of the tale go back to 17th Century Italy. Stories of child

abandonment are thought to have originated in the medieval 1300’s

during the Great Famine, which actually drove desperate starving people

to leave their children in the woods. But today the idea of leaving your

kids to fend for themselves in hope of a better life seems...well, simply

unfathomable.

As we worked on this story over the past few years, we struggled to

justify this fundamental plot point. Then, one day last summer, our

Director of Latino Theatre connected the dots for us, pointing out that this

is still happening today with thousands of unaccompanied minors from

Central America being sent up alone to the U.S. on trains in hopes of a

better life. It is still happening today, in fact.

Desperation also took hold of Appalachian miners during the great

depression. The coal companies owned everything leaving little for the

miners and their families to survive on.

The reason we decided to tackle this centuries-old story is because it

reflects the resilience of the urban youth we work with every day. Most of

us already know that Hansel & Gretel survive their ordeal, but we thought

real life kids would benefit from seeing other kids as empowered

survivors. While today, Hansel & Gretel would likely find their way home

with their Breadcrumb GPS App, modern kids still face many challenges.

And however plugged in they may be, most kids at some point feel all

alone. Even old classics still serve a purpose. That’s why this old tale of

Hansel & Gretel. That’s why.
