1985
with the patented synchronous serial interface (SSi), Sick-STeG-mann Gmbh created an interface which established itself as an undisputed standard in industrial environments.
The new standard The revolution
1996
with the innovative universal hiperface® interface, Sick-STeG-mann set another global standard in 1996: There was now only one interface on the speed controller for all applications and only one type of signal line between the speed controller and feedback system.

The HIPERFACE® interface is known for its compactness, speed and precision – the installed base is globally present. In order to better serve customer require-ments our engineers kept just a single goal in mind: to make a great system even better. They looked for areas where improvements could be made, simplified or accelerated. The result: HIPERFACE DSL®. This digital servo link interface enables an entirely new architecture for the servo drive with completely new options, as it is now fully digital instead of hybrid (ana-log/digital).
With SSI and HIPERFACE® we have suc-ceeded in setting new industry standards. HIPERFACE DSL® fulfills all requirements to establish itself as a premium system.
The digital evolution
2011
hiperface® goes digital: with hiperface dSl®, tech-nology leader Sick presents a purely digital protocol that uses a minimum of connection cables between the frequency converter and motor feedback system.

The original – single cable technology with hiperface dSl®
Thanks to the innovative and interference-free HIPERFACE DSL® protocol, communication can be achieved using just two wires that are integrated into the motor cable.
hiperface dSl ® overview
The absence of motor feedback connections achieves significant cost savings and distinctly increased performance.
Controller-side, analog devices become superfluous, and implementation is made easier through the use of an fpGa or aSic. This leaves only one connector for connecting the servomotor, including power, communication and the temperature sensor.
The absence of motor feedback connections allows for design freedom motor-side, which is extremely important in the case of small servomotors.
For the entire system, these advantages mean reduced cabling, lower space requirements and unparalleled performance.

Your benefits as a result of HIPERFACE®
• optimum market penetration, as it is implemented worldwide
• analog signals (sine and cosine signals) can be picked up externally
• Enables an external safety concept
• easy commissioning thanks to the electronic type label
This information is transmitted by HIPERFACE®
• commutation
• absolute position
• Speed
• data from the electronic type label
The HIPERFACE® interface is supported by numerous drive man-ufacturers, thus offering broad market coverage. By this hybrid interface, it transmits both analog and digital sensor values.
The speed measurement is performed using high-precision analog sin- and cosine signals (process data channel). The digi-tal absolute position is transmitted via the parameter channel.

moTor feedback SySTemS wiTh hiperface® inTerfaceS for direcT driveS
with this design the motor and machine speed is identical, therefore there is no loss of torque due to a gear mechanism, ball joint spindle or other coupling.
Main advantages of direct drives:
• Extended service life – low mainte-nance
• increased immediacy
• precision and repeatability
• compact design
• Energy efficiency
Source: ina — drives & mechatronics
increased immediacyThe drive system is more immediate and dynamic because the control circuit requires no elastic coupling elements. ball joint spindles limit or dampen torque transmission and speed and therefore are subject to structural limitations.
for this reason, dynamic linear direct drives with their time-saving potential in production cycles offer an interesting alternative for customers.
Extended service life – low main-tenanceconventional drive systems with servo-motors and gears or ball joint spindles are subject to wear, meaning that the drive system requires regular mainte-nance and servicing.
because direct drives contain no gear mechanisms within the drive train, they are extremely low-maintenance. This leads to a significant reduction in mainte-nance time and costs as oil changes for gear mechanisms becomes a thing of the past.
The past years have shown a clear trend towards direct drives in the field of electronic drive engineering.
Today companies are forced to take en-ergy efficiency into greater consideration for production in order to ensure com-petitiveness, as energy costs are playing an increasingly significant role in the cost structure. in doing so, they are faced with the challenge of finding the right balance between dynamic performance and productivity. This task can be ideally realized with the help of direct drives.
Sick, the innovative provider of industri-al automation products, recognized this trend towards direct drives very early on and developed a range of bespoke motor feedback systems: • Motor feedback systems SEK90,
Sek160 and Sek260 for torque-mo-tors
• Motor feedback systems TTK50 and TTk70 for linear motors
These motor feedback systems are equipped with the industry standard hi-perface® interface and are compatible with the world's leading drive systems.
WhAt IS A DIRECt DRIvE?
a direct drive is a system whereby the motor (actuator) is directly fastened to the moving part (for example a rotary table).

Energy efficiencyThe development of efficient, ecologi-cally-sound systems is an increasingly important matter today. a direct-drive system saves energy costs due to the fact that transmission losses are practically eliminated.
compact designThe overall system is extremely compact with direct drives due to the fact that the range of components and moving parts is limited. This leads to two distinct ad-vantages: easy handling for the machine engineer and simple integration for the end user.
precision and repeatabilitydirect drives offer improved precision and repeatability compared to servomo-tors with gear mechanisms or ball joint spindles. Gear play can be compensated for with a complex mechanical structure, however, this often leads to higher devel-opment and construction costs.

In applications which do not require absolute motor feedback systems, incremental motor feedback systems with commutation tracks are used.
The direction of the current is reversed using the commutation tracks, which guarantees equal rotational movements..
at a constant torque as regards the input shaft and clockwise rotation. connecting sig-nals A and B creates an output signal, which has a varying-sized cycle duration tx1...tx4.
The difference is determined by: • The pulse/pause ratio tolerance of the individual channels
• The tolerance in the 90° phase shift between a and b
• The frequency.
The times tx1...tx4 should ideally be equal to 1/4 of the cycle duration T.The typical output frequency of the encoders is defined in such a way so that the maxi-mum time tx is less than 1.5 x T/4.

pGT-11-S: The universal visualization and programming tool
There was a very clear motivation behind the development of the innovative svip®: we wanted a single programming tool which supported all existing and future motor feedback systems. By developing this 'one-for-all' tool, we managed to achieve just that. svip® is ideal for use with our systems and replaces all previous programming tools.
The svip® supplements the familiar functions of predecessor programming tools by offering additional and improved applications for programming and analysis. what's more, the svip® has a single standard user interface for all tasks.
• Oscilloscope function – for qualitative signal analysis• Presentation of histograms, e.g., temperature• Reading out and saving of E2prom content• Enables synchronization of analog signals and the absolute position of HIPERFACE® products.
