was gradually overtaken by pop rock, beat, psychedelic rock, blues rock and folk rock, which had grown in popularity.

• Teenage music dominated commercial radio, but other groups were becoming dissatisfied with the current radio offerings.

• Both the Australian music charts and Australian bands were heavily influenced by American and British music styles throughout the 1960s.

• The sixties was a decade in which music festivals flourished, especially at the end of the decade. The Monterey Pop Festival took place in 1967, and featured some of the most popular rock musicians of the time and was one of the first heavily attended rock festivals. Many of the most popular acts of the decade had their first major American appearance at this festival like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and The Who.

Fashion in the 1960s• slim fitting and featured bold geometric

shapes. Colour was also a key concern - the conservative greys, browns and pastels of the 1950s were replaced by bright, wild hues. In contrast to fashion trends of the past, these garments were mass-produced and affordable.

• Clothing styles and fabrics were inspired by non-Western cultures, such as Indian and African. Natural fabrics and tie-dyed and paisley prints were also popular. Many people handcrafted their own clothes and accessories and personal items were often decorated with beads and fringes. Bare feet or leather sandals were typical hippie fashion and flowers and peace signs became symbols of the movement.

Woodstock• was a music festival, billed as

"An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music". It was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre (2.4 km²; 240 ha, 0.94 mi²) dairy farm in the Catskills near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel, New York, from August 15 to August 18, 1969. During the sometimes rainy weekend, thirty-two acts performed outdoors in front of 500,000 concert-goers.

• Woodstock has been idealized in the American popular culture as the culmination of the hippie movement. - What started as a paid event ended being free with over 500,000 attendees or flower children. Although the festival was remarkably peaceful given the number of people and conditions involved, the reality was less than perfect. Woodstock did have some crime and other misbehavior, as well as a fatality from a drug overdose

Surfing in the 1960s• The influence of the movie Gidget and the

influence of surf music in the early 60’s surfing became a sub culture and commercial enterprise. ‘The Surfer’ magazine began in 1960 and board shapers began to experiment.

• By the 1960s, surf culture had become a full-fledged industry, comprised of music, movies, magazines, mass produced boards, clothes and gear, that exported not just surfing, fashion, and an image—one arguably disproportionately linked to Southern California. Nascent surf scenes popped up, and embraced not only the sport, but the accoutrements of music, vocabulary and style as well. In places such as the United Kingdom, where surfing began as early as it did in California and Australia, the surf craze also took hold, crowding the beaches and incorporating cultural practices derived from California.
