Acts 2: 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Baptism by fire is not the work of the Holy Spirit we should be focusing on.

Acts 1: 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 1: 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Acts 1: 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Jesus’ words focus more on the GEOGRAPHICAL nature of the Holy Spirit above the miraculous DISPLAY of the Holy Spirit.

The focus of the Holy Spirit, according to Jesus, should be upon His outward spiral:

Four People Groups in Acts: 1. Jerusalem—Jews 2. Judea— “God Fearers” 3. Samaria—Samaritans (Half breeds) 4. Ends of the Earth--Gentiles

Four “Pentecosts” in Acts: 1. Jerusalem—Jews (Acts 2) 2. Judea— “God Fearers” (Acts 10-

Cornelius) 3. Samaria—Samaritans (Half breeds)

(Acts 8) 4. Ends of the Earth—Gentiles (Acts 19)

The most important characteristic of the Holy Spirit has to do with the AUDIENCE He is pouring himself into.

The nature of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament has changed through the work of Christ in the New. In the past, the Holy Spirit worked only

through select individuals. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit is available

to EVERYONE.
