Shhhhh
Please do not spread the word as to how scrumptious the garden Club’s Pot Luck lunch was. We do not want any more people to come because there would not be as many left overs that we were able to purchase at extremely reduced prices.
My only complaint is that I did not win the raffle of Vicki Cardiff-Kinder’s beautiful handiwork. Perhaps next year I Vicki donates again.
Thank you Garden Club for an enjoyable meal time even though I did eat too much.

Stray Goats
There are some 10 meat goats that have escaped and have been roaming the Windellama area for several months. These goats have made multiple visits to our property on Nerrrimunga Creek causing considerable damage. The NLIS tag number was identified and a representative of the Department of Primary industries assisted in tracking down the owner who had not registered the purchase in the NLIS database.
I have contacted the owner and find that there appears to be a lack of resolve to recover the goats and that they may be available to anyone who would like to collect them if found.
If anyone comes across these goats and is interested in taking ownership of them, please contact me with the NLIS tag number and I will put you in contact with the owner to facilitate this.
This is a reminder to us all that land owners have a responsibility for their stock and there are consequences that also impact others if they do not undertake this responsibility.

ALL PROFITS TO ROTARY CHARITIES & LOCAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Editor’s Note: Telstra’s representatives asked me to forward this article to them for factual verification before printing. The parts in italic are the alterations suggested by Telstra.
On Sunday 20th August there were four representatives from Telstra present at the markets to answer community questions and concerns about the mobile reception tower which is situated at the corner of Oallen Ford Road and Windellama Road, opposite the Windellama Hall. The tower was presented as commissioned on 28th June and three levels of government, Federal, State & Local were on location for the photo shoot.
It is fair to say, that since then, there has been a level of disappointment throughout the community at the mobile signal performance generated by the tower. Put simply, if you are more that 5k from the tower, you will be getting no signal at all. Since the tower has been installed, there is now more than 100 square kilometres of enhanced coverage.
A number of factors influence coverage, including local topography, obstructions such as trees and other structures and building materials, as well as how far you are from the nearest base station. Any residents whose signal strength is impacted by some of these factors may have an opportunity to experience coverage with the aid of an external aerial and / or Smart Antenna.
At the Windellama Markets on Sunday I met with Matthew Luff, Local Customer Service Consultant, Josh Matthews, Business Manager from the Telstra Store in Goulburn and Ann Jakle, Community Engagement Specialist for Telstra Country Wide. Also present was Chris Taylor, General Manager Telstra Southern Area. I did not get to meet Chris as he was out in the area visiting various properties to experience the signal problems firsthand. All of these people gave up their own time to be able to meet with the local community on Sunday.
The three representatives that I spoke with were upfront and honest about their lack of technical expertise. Matthew started a spreadsheet with people’s names, addresses and the number of bars they were getting on their phones, so he could pass on to the technicians for their opinions. During the day, the team also provided advice on how to maximise the coverage already available in the area through the use of an external aerial. In-building coverage may also be improved in some circumstances with the installation of a Telstra Mobile Smart Antenna. This product may be effective in improving in-building coverage for residents in the area. Additional information can be found here: http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/coverage-networks/our-coverage/#maximisecoverage
In the coming months, the online coverage maps will be updated to reflect the new coverage area. Residents will be able to view the coverage down to an address level. Residents can search coverage at their location at this link - https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage
It is also important for residents to check that their handset and their SIM card are compatible with the Telstra 3G and 4GX networks. If residents are unsure as to whether they have a

Saturday 13th August this year was our Cake Auction Fund Raiser for Goulburn Can-Assist.
It was great to receive the hands on assistance from the SES, Our Garden Club Friends, Graeme Welsh Real Estate, the Windellama Progress Association and of course our Garden Club Members.
The varieties of cakes/pasties donated were many and our thanks go to all these wonderful people who donated them.
Donations of other kinds for this event were received from our Garden Club Friends, Farmer Felds, Bungendore Butchery, Goulburn Trappers, Johnno’s Shop, the Windellama Progress Association and our Garden Club Members.
Although the attendance numbers were slightly down on previous years the participants that attended were in a participating mood evident by the way our auctioneer Graeme Welsh achieved top prices for the goodies on offer.
Once again our raffle first price a lovely quilt was made and donated by our Garden Club Friend Kaye. Every year Kaye arrives from Sydney to assist at this event.
It’s worth remembering that all monies received on this day from the cake/pastry auction, ticket sales, canteen, the guessing competitions and donations received will be presented to the Goulburn Can-Assist Group at our High Tea on the 13th October 2016.
Finally, great big thanks to everyone who turned up and participated – THANK YOU.

compatible handset, they can visit the Telstra Store Goulburn, where the staff will be happy to assist.
Mention was also made of the future towers planned for the area, and how all these towers are designed to work in conjunction with each other to remove blackspots.
The other constant reference was to the hilly terrain around Windellama; the location of the tower is 591 meters above sea level, which given that the tower is 40 meters high means that the transmitters are at 631 meters (source Google Earth). If you have not already done so, an interesting exercise is to plot the elevation from your address to the tower using Google Earth. This will also give you the distance “as the crow flies” to the tower.
At the end of the day, we have to realize that the tower is not going to be moved, or raised and we that we have to work with what we currently have. The only variable that can change is the amount of wattage output by the tower; increasing the power will carry the signal further (bearing in mind that if you are in the lee of a hill getting a signal will always be difficult). Hopefully we can work with Telstra to achieve some boost in output.
When the other local towers are completed then more coverage will be available.

VOTE 1 DENZIL STURGISS on September 10 to represent you on Goulburn Mulwaree Council
Vote for a Candidate who has 17 years experience in Local Government and who wants to continue to be your voice on a proactive Council that is “easy to do business with”.
I want Goulburn Mulwaree Council to be able to sustainably fund high quality services and infrastructure for all residents and ratepayers in both the rural and the city areas. To achieve this I am committed to continuing the work I have already been focussing on including
Increasing budget allocations to the rural areas. In 2015/2016 the rural roads budget was increased by 300% and a further $1 million was added to the 2016/2017 budget.
Supporting the rural bridge replacement program with Komungla Bridge next on the list.
Representing you on the various Council Committees especially those relating to the control of Noxious Weeds and the Management of Rural Fire Services.
Supporting the continuing upgrade of the Goulburn CBD.
Supporting the maintenance and development of facilities available to all residents across Goulburn Mulwaree, particularly the Aquatic Centre upgrade and the much needed upgrade of St Clair Historical Museum. I am very excited about the Performing Arts Centre Project and wish to continue on that committee and am also keen to make sure we maintain and grow the Goulburn Recreation Area facilities.
Keeping an open mind about the High Speed Rail Project and making sure it generates associated business opportunities and jobs for the area.
Making sure the Rural Villages funding program continues to provide residents in those areas with facilities relevant to their particular needs.
These are just some of the projects I would like to continue working on and of course I will also represent you across all issues and all areas.
Vote for me on September 10 and I will continue to work for the best outcomes for everyone.

GCoPS CONCERT This year at the Goulburn Community of Public Schools (GCoPS) Concert, Windellama students participated in the choir. Students also performed recorder with students from Tirranna and Breadalbane Public School who played the ukulele. They were guided by the wonderful Miss A from the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium of Music who was very proud of them.
KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION Our extensive Kindergarten orientation program for students entering school in 2017 will begin this term. If you would like your child to participate in this program please contact the school on (02) 4844 5130.
TREC EXCUSRSION TO THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUDE OF
SPORT (AIS) AND MINI OLYMPICS Our students in TREC have been working on a unit on the Olympics and this will culminate in a mini Olympics Day we will attend at Tirranna Public School as well as attending the AIS in Canberra.
CLUB FRIDAY Club Friday is well underway and students are thoroughly enjoying Friday afternoons. The senior students have been building billy carts with Grahame Woodcock. The younger students have been sewing and making paper mache dinosaur helmets. The billy carts are just about finished and they’re looking pretty jazzy. We are very thankful to have the support and expertise of Grahame. We’d like to say a HUGE thank you to the Progress Association who have kindly offered to cover the cost of the billy cart project. Any community members who would like to share their hobby with our students, please think about coming into our school.
This weekend Peter and I drove from “Dreamers Edge” across to Nowra on MR92 for the first time ever and were pleasantly surprised with such an enjoyable trip (luckily it was early Saturday morning so there weren’t too many ACT cars overtaking at great speeds).
We continued up the coast to the South Coast Fibre Muster at Gerringong Town Hall and who should we discover but none other than our neighbours Judy & Warren Yates and Irene & Lloyd Turner. Surprise! Well, not quite, as this was the whole reason for our trip. They were demonstrating portable weaving methods on the Goulburn Spinners & Weavers table, along with Anne who was spinning.
Judy and Irene had also entered the Best in Show Sheep Competition – Judy had made a sweet wallhanging with a flock of sheep on it and Irene had made a cute hat that looked like a sheep’s face. Irene was even wearing a tiger hat she had knitted and Judy was resplendent in a pretty
pink top she had woven, while Warren sported his reliable handspun jumper. So this is what some of our community get up to when they go away for the weekend.
Such an interesting exhibition – we spent a couple of hours looking around and chatting, bagging fabric, wool and other bargains. We had taken a picnic lunch, which we enjoyed in the park next to the Town Hall, enjoying the beautiful sunny weather, a rare treat. Thanks to our Windellama neighbours for such a good day.

David is one of our newest members here at the Windellama SES. Having just completed Land Search and Fundamentals, David is keen to further his passion in cave access skills and height safety systems, through courses in the SES.
It was Kevin Muffet who persisted in getting David to join the SES. After years of trying, David finally agreed and hasn’t looked back.
David is no couch potato, as a Train Guard in Mossvale, he has a few interesting stories to tell. David has a diverse list of hobbies and interests including tapestry, caving, leadlight and leatherwork. Not to mention his major project at the moment which is the commencement of construction of his ‘solar passive, poured earth home.’!
The opportunities in the SES are endless and extremely rewarding. There is something for everyone. David recommends community members ‘come and enjoy the relaxed social side whilst learning community assistance skills’.
Always ready to lend assistance wherever he can, David is pictured here cooking up a storm for our Manly SES crew. Twelve Manly SES crew recently visited our neck of the woods to complete their chainsaw and tree felling assessments.
David is interested in joining the Community First Response team and will bring years of first aid experience with him. I believe he will do extremely well in whatever paths he chooses in the SES.

The Yarralaw Parish Map shows two locations for a Yarralaw School. One is a two acre site (Portion 150, Parish Yarralaw) for the school and an eight acre horse paddock (Portion 151, Parish Yarralaw). This site is opposite where Benduck Road enters Oallen Ford Road.
The other site is Portion 256 on the north western side of Parish Yarralaw near the Bullamalita Road intersection with Lumley Road.
The Jacqua Reefs School was established in 1873 on the Jacqua Gold Fields. By 1875 the gold fields were all but deserted so the school (now just Jacqua) was moved to a more populous area on the road from Bungonia to Windellama (Oallen Ford Road). The school was set up in the Jacqua Anglican Church.
This was about a mile from Jacqua homestead towards Bungonia. About the same time about two miles to the south of Jacqua School another school was started on Mr Thomas Blake’s property. This was not a Government run school but Mr Blake engaged a teacher to teach his children and others from around the area. The teacher of this school was George Samuel Moore who had been in the British Army and also a Waterloo veteran. He spent five years in the Yarralaw area.
Late in 1875 a committee of parents was set up to have a Provisional School provided in the area. Spokesmen for the committee were Thomas Blake, John Larkham and Thomas Quinn. On 8 November 1875 they applied to the Council of Education for a school, one mile south of George Moore’s school and put forward Mr Moore as a teacher for the school. This location was Portions 150 and 151 as mentioned above.
The Inspector of Schools for the Goulburn district, Mr DS Hicks recommended that the site for the school put forward would be suitable if it was on Crown Land. The Council advised that they would establish a Provisional School in the area if the parents provided a suitable building with furnishings.
In February 1876 the inspector recommended that £20 be provided to aid the construction but the Council declined any aid.
The Jacqua School closed in June 1878. It re opened in July 1880 in a newly built school building near the church. This meant that Mr Moore lost a lot of his pupils to the new school so he closed his school and moved on to Nerriga and had a school there on the Clarke and Rolfe properties.
A report in the Goulburn Herald in 1902 mentions a communication from Mr Blake to the local member of Parliament, Mr Chapman protesting at the closure of the Yarralaw half time school. I rather think that this refers to the Jacqua half time school as it closed in March 1905 and didn’t reopen until October 1917, finally closing in July 1924.
I have a vague recollection of something that my mother said years ago of a small school
(Continued on page 19)
Page 18 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - September 2016
standing about half a kilometre towards the Windellama Hall from Benduck Road but on the opposite side of the road.
In 1903 the Government introduced Subsidised Schools. A system where the parents provided the building and furnishings and the Government provided a subsidy for each child. Perhaps the school that my mother remembered was one of these.
The other Yarralaw School site mentioned earlier was at Portion 256 Parish Yarralaw. This school apparently did exist, again possibly as a subsidised school. In the obituary of Mr Robert (Bob) Frost that he was educated at Yarralaw School that adjoined the Frost’s Ravenswood property. He would have attended school in the years 1912 to 1920.
In a list of polling places for the 1911 Mulwaree Shire elections one polling place was to be at the Ravenswood School, surely this was one and the same as the said Yarralaw School.
If anyone has any information of these schools I would like to hear from you.
Since mentioning the Green Army in some of our recent articles, there has been growing interest in what exactly The Green Army is and what it does.
We observe that the Green Army is a government based initiative which has two main goals in mind. The first is to provide valuable life skills to young Australians aged 17-24, who may not have much prior experience in how to manage and conserve the land. The second aim of the project is to deliver a team who can help local groups in managing historical and environmental concerns.
We have already seen some wonderful output here in Windellama with our local Landcare group working alongside the Green Army to identify projects in our area. Some have already been started, with more on the drawing board.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday the 10th of September, so please save the date if you’re interested in coming along. More details about the next meeting will be included in next month’s issue.
It’s not too late to add compost or well decomposed animal manure to both your vegetables and flower gardens.
VEGETABLES
Seeds;- carrots, parsnips, lettuce, silver beet, onions, cabbages, radish, Kohlrabi, peas and beetroot, can all be sown now.
Potatoes- planting tubers from September to December, after the worst frost is over. The tubers (or seed potatoes) are planted 15cm deep and 75 cm. apart. Apply a general fertilizer at the rate of a good handful below the tubers per running metre.
FLOWERS
Plant seedlings of violas, verbena, dianthus, carnations, stock, wallflower, dwarf sweet Williams, nemesia, polanthus and for early display petunias and phlox.
Bulbs of gladioli can be planted now, give the garden some old compost and plenty of sun and good drainage. Gladioli from planting to flower takes about 90 days. If soil is sandy plant at 20cm deep, and stake when needed.
A light dressing of complete fertilizer when planting will ensure large healthy flowers.
New lawns; give the area to be grassed a dressing of garden lime or gypsum and cultivate to a depth of 8-10cm. Do this 2 to 4 weeks prior to sowing the lawn seeds. Just before sowing cover the area with a good sandy loam to a depth of 8-10cm if necessary, and water in well.
This is the time to spray the weeds, such as bindii etc., make sure the grass is well watered before spraying. You can apply a complete fertilizer to the lawns water in well, a light dressing of lime is also recommended.

Thank you to everyone who was willing to work at St Bart’s Windellama churchyard this month (4 couples compared to 3 couples last month). However, yet again rain fell all night and morning, preventing our working bee as it had done last month. Jude & Wazza kindly invited us to their warm home again for a get together and morning tea. Irene had cooked gramma muffins & gramma pie and even gave us some gramma to take home, while Caroline also brought fig cuttings from her successful tree for us to grow.
We laughed hysterically about the great white hunter episode where one of our gardening group saw a rabbit in the garden in the dead of night. He reappeared with shotgun in hand wearing his boots (clad in nothing else but his boots) – the great white hunter indeed.
We enjoyed a break in the weather to zip around the gardens and say hello to their resident animals, especially Rusty Alpaca Yates who is not very well. The large daphne bush is a delightful picture of fragrant blossoms, while violets are blooming everywhere – both purple and white varieties, bulbs of jonquils are blooming and the hellebores are looking good. In the veggie gardens the broadbeans, peas, and lots of other greens are growing well.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday 6th September at Peter & Caroline Campbell’s Nirvalley Nursery on Cullulla Road. It will be a great opportunity to
explore our local nursery (where plants are acclimatised for our region), especially as it is almost time for autumn planting of bare rooted fruit trees & roses. Anyone & Everyone is welcome to come.

There are four major environmental events in September – it’s National Biodiversity month; Save the Koala month; National Threatened Species Day on the 7th and National Bilby Day on the 11th. They are all very important events, and actually are connected one with the other – koalas and bilbys are threatened species, and biodiversity is important to all living things, including us.
As the WIRES mission is to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife and inspire others to do the same - I will concentrate on National Threatened Species Day.
National Threatened Species Day is held on 7th
September each year, being the date of the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine) at Hobart Zoo in 1936. It is a day to reflect on past losses, and think about how we can help preserve the species that are still with us, especially those that are at risk of disappearing.
Australia has the worst mammal extinction record in the world – 27 mammal species or subspecies, along with 23 birds and 4 frog species ‘gone’ since European settlement. No other country or continent has such a tragic record. In addition, of our surviving biodiversity, more than 1,500 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and plants are listed as threatened with extinction under Government Legislation.
We all know about the plight of the Koala, Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat, Leadbeater’s Possum and other iconic creatures through the media coverage and publicity they receive. We may wish to help, but apart from supporting environmental groups and perhaps donating money, there is little we can do in our day to day living.
However, it is different with birds – especially our small birds. Many of them are in sharp decline, even threatened – but these are creatures we CAN help. The major cause of the decline in our small birds is land clearing. We can plant as many replacement trees as we like, but these will only help the bigger birds – our small birds need native shrubs and understorey. They need dense bushes to hide from predators - to roost in and build their nests. Every shrub or small dense foliaged tree (preferably native, but even exotic) that we plant makes a difference – particularly a few planted in one spot so they have several places to escape to when threatened. We can all plant shrubs, no matter where we live or how small our garden. Even if you don’t have a garden, potted shrubs on a balcony or in a courtyard will help.
The environment and our wildlife are in trouble, and their biggest threat is assuming that someone else will save them. So, don’t wait until Threatened Species Day to think about this – please get planting now!
For help with injured wildlife please ring our branch Rescue number – 4822 3888, our volunteers will be only too happy to assist.
Until next time, take care all - Kay

Goulburn Mulwaree Council is encouraging parents, grandparents and carers to take advantage of the free Safe Seats Voucher which is on offer all year round; the vouchers can be picked up from the Council Customer Service Centre.
Council, in partnership with the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has teamed up with Goulburn’s authorised RMS child restraint fitter Rapid Auto Repair to provide the service.
All inspections will be undertaken by a certified technician and residents can have a new child restraint fitted free of charge.
Goulburn Mulwaree Road Safety Officer Tracey Norberg encouraged anyone carrying children in a vehicle to book an inspection. “When used correctly, child safety car-seats can dramatically reduce fatal injuries for infants and toddlers” Mrs Norberg said.
“The best way to protect children travelling in vehicles is to ensure they have the correct car seat for the child’s age and size, and ensure it is properly fitted.”
Children up to seven years of age must be safely fastened in the correct restraint for their age and size.
“A child who is properly secured in an approved child restraint is less likely to be injured or killed in a car crash than one who is not” Tracey said. “Children up to seven years of age are at least four times as likely to sustain a head injury in a crash when using an adult seatbelt compared with children secured in an appropriate child restraint.”
Once people collect their vouchers they must book an appointment time with Rapid Auto Repairs in Goldsmith Street by calling 4822 3222.
The service also runs a Safe Seats Day each year, where residents can have their existing child restraints, harnesses and booster seats checked for safety and correct installation.
For further information please contact Goulburn Mulwaree Road Safety Officer Tracey Norberg on 4823 4510 or 0409 986 691.

We went to Meroogal a house built in 1885 from the proceeds of a successful mine on the Shoalhaven river made Mr Robert Thorburn a wealthy man and enabled him to move his widowed mother and siblings to a house in town. It was bought from the last descendant of the family in 1985 by the Sydney Living Museums Trust and as it had been in the one family for its entire life there were many things acquired or inherited still present in the house. We were given a very informative and relaxed tour of the house and garden by a volunteer with the Trust and she was extremely well informed and instructive. When Robert remarried his new wife insisted they live in Sydney so the unmarried 4 sisters were left the house and 5 acres of land but no real income so they had to slowly sell off the land to new developments. The living conditions are still fairly primitive and the gardens are due for an overhaul as the trees planted early on have got rather large especially a Lilly Pilly planted in 1940 which is too near the house and has been growing very happily. Some wattle birds have built a block of flats in the camellia by the front door and although shielded from the street they are quite exposed on the house side. We counted 7 nests and it must be quite noisy at feeding time!
Next month we hope to head to Araluen when the peach trees should be in bloom and partake of lunch at the pub there. Usual arrangements meet at 7184 Nerriga Road 9am and carpool for the drive arriving we hope around 10-30am. The third Wednesday is 21st September. Rural Living Handbook Goulburn Mulwaree Council has recently updated its Rural Living Handbook; the book is targeted at residents living on the land within Goulburn Mulwaree, and providing them with a simple guide that will assist and inform them.
The handbook informs land owners of the many resources available to them, as well as the requirements and responsibilities of living on the land.
The Rural Living Handbook was awarded the President’s Award in the NSW Division of the 2007 Planning Institute of Australia’s awards. Updating the handbook was an important action recently identified by the Noxious Weeds Advisory Working Party and has now been undertaken.
Updates made include contact information for State Government Departments and other organisations. Other helpful information within the handbook include tips for buying your property, information on natural resources such as soil, water, fire, weeds and pest animals, and property management – including farm safety, stock management, use of chemicals and much more.
Correct management of rural land is becoming increasingly important as the agricultural industry continues to improve efficient practices. Grazing management, control of weeds and stock health are all important factors for rural property owners, and contribute to being ‘good neighbours.’
Mayor Geoff Kettle was impressed with the updates. “Council staff is consistently working hard to make life easier for residents within our community. This fantastic Rural Living Handbook is a great resource for residents already living on rural land, or people who are thinking of making the “tree change” to Goulburn – please take advantage of it!”
The Rural Living Handbook is easily available from Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s website; simply visit www.goulburn.nsw.gov.au and then type ‘Rural Living Handbook’ in our search bar.
