Welcome to our Spring Edition of the Williams Post. Of

course its not Spring in the Middle East but at least the searing heat of the summer is beginning to subside.

Whilst on the Middle East, you will note that we are making good progress on the Masdar Project, an absolutely World Class Project.

In this edition

The new financial year is now well underway and the momentum is clearly on winning work across the whole business for the Brisbane, Gold Coast and Melbourne Offices.

I have now been at JLW for 10 months, and some days it seems much longer. Leading the way in restructuring an old firm such as JLW is no small task with all areas of the business needing examination and reinvigoration. The simple fact is since 9/11 business around the world is far more demanding, cash is tight and more demands are placed on all of us on a daily basis.

That said, JLW is well positioned to engage the new reality and I’m pleased to say the vast majority of the staff are ready for the challenges ahead.

We appear to have turned the corner and all employees have embraced the new strategy and direction.

Well done team and may FY 2014 be successful for all.

Masdar - Positive-Energy!

Masdar will be Abu Dhabi’s iconic low emission city, a world first in environmental sustainability. The city will rely entirely on solar and other renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology and will be a car free. It is a community where cutting-edge research and development, pilot projects, technology testing, and construction will be undertaken on some of the world’s most sustainable buildings. Masdar serves as an open technology platform that gives partner companies an opportunity to develop, test and validate their technologies in a large scale, real-world environment.

James L Williams Middle East was awarded the Masdar Headquarters Building that resides right in the heart of the city.

JLW continues its good relationship with the main contractor Brookfield Multiplex. This is JLW Middle East’s 7th project since 2009. JLW won the project on the basis of our unique blend of technical and engineering competence and construction expertise.

From the word “go”, JLW have been catching up a 5 months delay in the MEP program; re-designing all

services, assisting the builder by allowing him to continue with aspects of the structure whilst catching up on the services, quickly identifying critical design flaws and correcting them. We have now managed to instil confidence in the client and project stakeholders regarding MEP Services. Well done Team.

The project is due to finish mid to end of 2014.

Ongoing projects

JLW are currently working on four projects in the Middle East, City of Lights, Masdar Headquarters and Etihad Training Academy with Brookfield Multiplex and Seaview Hotel Palm Jumeirah with Intermass.

New Projects

JLW have a good chance to pick up two new projects in the coming weeks.

The first is the Pearl Diving Pool project for His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. Details of the Pearl Diving Pool have not been released publically – but we can say that it will be the deepest indoor scuba diving facility in the world and will utilise some of the latest technological advancements. JLW are currently working on the

projects substructure package, the final works is pending award. Another iconic project to add to JLW’s list.

The other project is OneJLT, a commercial tower in Dubai’s Jumeriah Lake Towers Free Zone. A design and construct project similar to the recently completed Standard Chartered Bank Tower JLW delivered. JLW are part of the main contractors design and build team of architects and consultants that are working exclusively with developer to finalise the design and cost the works for award.

Tendering

JLW are aiming to secure another job with Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi based investment and development company (owners of Masdar City). Mubadala Aerospace subsidiary Advanced Military Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Company (AMMROC) the fastest growing defence firm in the region, registering 75 per cent growth year on year in 2012. AMMROC has released a large project in an effort to complete its Al Ain facility. AMMROC, will maintain the UAE’s military fleet of fixed-wing and rotary aircraft and has already partnered with US defence giants Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin.

are trying to secure new works with a very well reputed client Majid Al Futtaim (MAF). MAF is a large developer in the region and are known for their quality Shopping Centres, Hotels and Mixed-use Communities – with 16 Shopping Centres including Mall of the Emirates, 11 Hotels including the Kempinski and 4 million sqm of communities projects under construction and development. MAF are looking to expand the existing Mall of the Emirates and add a Hotel to their Deira City Centre Development.

ISO

ISO accreditation - a goal that JLW Middle East has set - now inches away from being achieved. Over two years ago Allen Williams (Chairman for JLW Middle East) had recognised the benefits of running a company that complies with ISO standards, and pushed for it to be a goal of the Middle East business. Following the footsteps of the Australian model the JLW team in Middle East worked on all fronts to bring their systems,

procedures, reporting and training regimen up to ISO standards. Throughout the month of September formal ISO audits were conducted in many departments including Quality Assurance, Human Resources, Procurement, Estimation, Design, IT, Health and Safety, Projects with a final interview with senior executive management. The results of which have been communicated and all positive, hence JLW Middle East is expecting to be ISO accredited for 9001 - Quality management systems, 14001- Environmental Management System and OHSAS – Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems starting October 2013.

Welcome

We welcome Colin Dowdle back to the JLW Family.

Formally our NSW State Director, Colin and his family are our newest ex-pats in the Middle East.

The Market and the Region

There are strong indications that the local market in the UAE, specifically Dubai has started another wave of a construction boom. The majority of Consultants are very busy, tenders are falling on Main Contractors desks and the rent as well as property prices are on the increase once again.

JLW ME is well positioned to benefit from the current construction market. Our name in the Middle East is now well established and known in our industry and we have a good edge in delivering D&C and high profile projects.

Queensland updateWith spring in the air the business has been reinvigorated. Michael McFarlane has transitioned from drafting to project management taking on new responsibilities and bringing further expertise to the department. Stephen McLachlan and Praneeth Ariyaratne are finalising the Six Star Green Star Global Change Institute Project. The project has many design intricacies and is a credit to all that partnered on the project. The University of Sunshine Coast project is progressing well under the management of Glen Thomas and is due for completion end October. The re-establishment of the projects department objectives, with a greater focus on retro-fit/refurbishment works has seen an increase in tender invitations from the market seeking a quality product. The new service vehicles are arriving and looking fantastic, as do the introduced new uniforms. Both technicians and clients have provided positive feedback to our new look. The rollout of our new asset management utility and iPhone application, Inbuildings, is a success driving our business toward a paperless environment. Thanks to Russel for his efforts in this regard. The new digital system provided us with real time progress feedback of scheduled maintenances along with

automated digital scheduling and online asset database management. We thank the work of all contributing to our ongoing Quality, Safety and Environmental systems and audit accomplishment. Aleks

Victorian updateWhilst Victoria’s Projects Department focuses on a slightly different range of work, the market at present, is not offering many large or even medium sized projects to tender. There seems to be an abundance of small projects which attract a lot of interest from all of our competitors. Whether this mix of work changes following the Federal Election or not remains to be seen.Away from the Tender market, we are negotiating Chiller installations, Air Handling Unit replacements and other projects which we hope to secure.Currently, we are pressing on with 27 Little Collins St., Australian Unity Carlton and Yarra Valley Water Cardinia. Work is almost complete as with the Australian Ballet Chiller replacement and Northcote Aquatic Centre.New projects include Ross House refurbishment, 600 Bourke St. Condenser Water Upgrade and a 10 Floor refurbishment and Fit-out at 180 Lonsdale Street. Decisions are still pending on Coles Tooronga and another large

refurbishment project in the Melbourne CBD. PhilThe service department has been concentrating on up skilling and providing value add services. Some of the value adds we have introduced are,1. Inbuildings Electronic Maintenance Program. 2. E-Belt Program. The E-Belt program evaluates large Vee Belt drive systems and optimizes the drive to achieve enhanced transmission efficiency gains. 3. Energy Audits. Our Sustainability Assist Program offers a variety of options to meet your needs. Our engineers can audit buildings, identify items of equipment that are energy inefficient, provide design solutions, quotations to rectify, and calculate payback periods for those solutions identified. Additionally our commissioning technicians can work together with the controls technicians to fine tune the operation of a buildings air conditioning systems to achieve lower operating costs and improved comfort conditions to the occupants.JLW has secured the Bioscience service and maintenance contract for the next 2 years (one of the largest and technically complex maintenance contracts ever undertaken). NEW SAFETY RELATED DOCUMENTS

A new register has been created that encompasses the entire training and licenses of all staff at James L Williams. It has been created as a full national networked document that all relevant staff can log into and edit to see who has the appropriate license for the appropriate job. It also keeps track of all our expiry dates.

A new Toolbox talk register has been implemented to streamline the process of issuing and keeping track of Toolbox Talks. It has also been set up as a National networked document that all relevant staff can issue out Toolbox talks as needed and keep the data up to date.

It was made apparent at the last audit in Brisbane that the MSDS’s around the sites and work vehicles were excessive and out of date. A new MSDS register has been created that makes it easier for all relevant staff to keep track of all up to date MSDS’s, update and monitor very simply.

QLD BRISBANE AUDIT

From 31 July to 2 August we conducted the Queensland Audit – which was performed from the Brendale and Gold Coast offices. The audit was very thorough, informative and overall quite successful, with only 6 minor NCR’s (Non Conformance Reports). Overall, I think it was a very good result, but the majority of the good result comes from the people that stood up and embraced the Safety Audit through the process. It was a very good team bonding exercise which everybody involved contributed and helped each through.

OBSERVATIONS SO FAR

My personal opinion so far in regards to safety at James L Williams is really good. Sure there are a few areas that need changing, updating, reducing/increasing, but, overall I think the whole Safety Culture of employees that has been created is top notch. It is clearly apparent when I step on site that everybody is embracing the safety environment and knows what they should and shouldn’t be doing. They are looking out for one another and keeping up a team atmosphere. Toolbox talks that I have attended have been very successful on site due to great group participation and even a few laughs going around.

It’s great to see everybody embracing OHS&E and making solid contributions to protect theirs and others safety.

Stand out champions I’d like to thank thus far are:

QLDLucy McIntyreRobert JamesNoel ParfittKathy Eickenloff

VICBrendan PatfordStuart FrenchLiam MonaghamMarty Healy

Check out the table on the last page of this newsletter; JLW is compliant with the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 (Act). Congratulations!

WHAT’S NEXT?

• Getting our OHSMS up to date and functioning

• Updating of all Toolbox Talks

• Updating of all SWMS

• Fire Warden Training

• Fire Evacuations

• Updating and increasing efficiency of our “Induction” system

• Re-roll new Induction to all staff and update personal filing system.

• More hands on site training
