THE WESLEY DISPATCH North Rose United Methodist Church Newsletter http://www.NorthRoseNYMethodist.com Rich Neal, Pastor 587-9544 or [email protected]Diane Walker, Assistant Pastor, 573-5444 or [email protected]Editor/Mailing List – Melissa Taber Printing – Kathy Barnes Vol. 38 No. 3 May-June 2017 A Word from the Pastor Valedictory Reflections on the Interim Year By Pastor Rich Neal Two angels visit your home each Friday evening as Sabbath begins, according to legend. If they find it neat and bright, the good angel blesses it, saying, “So may this be each week as we return,” and against his will the bad angel must say “Amen” as if he’s glad. But if the home is in disarray, the wicked angel prays that confusion will reign again the next time they visit, while the good angel must sob, “Amen!” Good endings are required for good beginnings. To make the best fresh start, we need to bring good closure to what has gone before, whether we’re talking about weeks, jobs, marriages, or any other significant experience or season of life. Even a single day. “Finish one day before you begin the next,” Emerson advised, “and interpose a solid wall of sleep between two.” Of course – you see where I’m going with this – it’s also true when a congregation changes pastors. Such a change is much more than a time of grief and uncertainty. It’s also a time of high potential, one of the greatest opportunities members of a congregation will have to influence its future. We need to celebrate the past that has brought us to this transition, and then we need to close the door on it as we open the door to the new future we’re involved in creating. During this intentional interim year at North Rose United Methodist Church you have rethought and reevaluated who you are, what you thought you were supposed to be, and what you valued and cared about. You reaffirmed some priorities and commitments as part of a ministry that will continue. You have recognized others as appropriate for their time but less relevant in the future, and you have let them go gracefully. In short, you have kept your house in order as one long season of ministry has drawn to a close, and I believe the good angel of pastoral transitions has blessed you for the new season of ministry with Pastor Anne that is set to begin. It has been a blessing for me to have served with you during this year. Unknown to me when I arrived in North Rose, this has turned out to be a time of exceptional transition for me, also. At the end of my appointment here, I will officially retire from active parish ministry. Some ideas about what comes next for me are brewing, but I don’t know what those ideas will become. What I do know is that my time with you this year has helped me bring thirty-six years of pastoral ministry to a tidy and good close, and you have helped me look to the future with hope and high expectation. Knowing you, I have come to know myself better; my relationship with God has widened and deepened, and the foundation upon which I will build what comes next has been strengthened. For all of that, and for all of you I am grateful. As we prepare to bid farewell to one another, we can both look forward to the future with great hope.
