The Methodist Men have placed Strength for Service to God

and Country, a daily devotional that provides spiritual encouragement and emotional strength for police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and all those

who are engaged in the service of others in the church office. We welcome you to pick-up a copy to send one to a loved one serving our country.

Family Life Update

September 8th Family Life will host our annual church picnic. It

will be held on Legislative Mall starting at 1 pm. There will be fun and fellowship for all ages. Family Life will provide burgers,

drinks and dessert. Each family should bring a salad or vegeta-ble dish to serve eight (8) people. Bring your chairs and blan-

kets, dress casual, bring friends and plan to spend some quality time with the church family as we kick off another school year.

October 26th Family Life will host our annual Trunk or Treat for the

church family and the community. Last year we served over 400 bag dinners and bushels of candy. We will be requesting that the

church family help by providing bags of candy and/or monetary do-nations to help with this event. Watch for details.

Search Class

Search Class is for adults who want to learn and be a

part of a loving, accepting group. The class meets in the back of the Educational Center on the main floor

Sundays 8:45-9:40 am. Once again we'll watch vide-os and respond to sermons of Rev. Adam Hamilton of

the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawod, Kansas. The September series is "This is

Us: Creating Strong and Beautiful Families." Families come in all shapes and siz-es. Some we're born into; some we choose. But no family is perfect. The Bible

offers important guidance for raising our children and honoring our par-ents. Scripture is also filled with lessons from flawed families who, just like us,

don't always get it right.

How was your summer? I hope you have made some wonderful and long-lasting mem-

ories.

Wesley UMW Circle meetings resume in September as will our plans for the Fall. Please

check our page on Wesley UMC's website for dates & times.

Wesley UMW has been represented throughout the summer with volunteers working at

the UMCOR Hub in Christiana on June 8, attendance at Mission u at Pecometh in July

and a trip to UMCOR's Mission Central on August 3.

Wesley UMW is again collecting school supplies for local students. A basket is on the

stage in Fellowship Hall where you can leave donations. Deadline is September 15th.

Supply lists are available at local stores and by contacting Mary Ann Dashiell at 302-

698-2166. Thank you for your generosity.

Let me call your attention to the Peninsula-Delaware's UMW Spiritual Life Retreat on

September 21st. The focus will be the Gospel of Mark and Radical Discipleship, led by

Rev. Bo Gordy-Stith. This program was presented at Mission u this year to great ac-

claim. The Retreat is being held at Zion UMC in Sharptown, MD, from 9 am to 2 pm.

Registration fee is $8.00. Please contact Barbara Rafte at 302-632-6308 if you are at-

tending and we will carpool if we possibly can. There is such a lot of value here for only

$8!

Wesley UMW membership is open to all women - not just Wesley UMC attendees and

not just United Methodists. Our mission has always been, and continues to be, the sup-

port of programs that serve women, youth and children locally and worldwide. Please

Christian Education By: Joe Young, Christian Ed Director

Where has the time gone? Summer is over and I have been in my current position at Wesley

for one (1) year. I would like to thank the following people for helping with Summer Sunday

School, Crystal and Kyle Brooks and family, Susan and Cliff Neidig, Carol Gambone, Mandy and

Tim Stant, Sandi and Jim Thistlewood, Amy Kellen, Allison Bumgarner, and Eunice Craig.

Sunday School starts back up on September 8th at the 9:45 am in Grace Fellowship Hall. We’re

going to be following our friends with the Deep Blue Curriculum for the pre-school thru 4th

grade. We’re very excited about where God is leading our children’s program, and hope that

you’ll join us on the adventure! We still have open spots for Lesson Leaders, Game/Craft Lead-

ers, and Snack Helpers! Contact Joe Young to sign up!

We partnered with St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church for VBS. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone that

helped in anyway this year.

Wesley’s youth group and St Andrews’ youth group enjoyed a afternoon of great fellowship,

miniature golf and enjoyed ice cream after we finished golfing.

September 8th is Kick-off Sunday, families returning from their summer vacations, etc. Please

come join us at 1 pm at Legislative Mall for the Church Annual Picnic. Details can be found on

page two (2). See you there!

Youth Group is starting back up on Sunday, September 15th, from 3:00-5:00 pm, at the Stu-

dent Ministries Center. The first meeting is for the parents and youth. We’ve got so many fun

things to look forward to this fall, and I can’t wait to get started! If you would be interested in

helping with the youth group, please connect me.

On the table outside of the Christian Ed office are envelopes with the names of all our children/

youth here at Wesley, please pick one (1) envelope, and pray for your Prayer Buddy for the

2019-2020 school year.

Youth Bell Choir By: Becky Davis

Beginning on Sunday, September 8th The Youth Bell Choir

will have a new director and some changes in rehearsal

time. Pat Root our new Youth Bell Choir director will hold

rehearsals every Sunday morning from 11:00 - 11:30 am,

directly after the 9:45 am Worship service. Rehearsals will

begin with a snack and will commence in the Bell Choir

room. Participants must be fourth grade through high

school. The ability to read music will be helpful, but there

will be instruction on how to read music during rehearsals so

this is not a required skill. We welcome high school musicians with music reading abili-

ties to come and help train the younger kids. Come join the fun and praise God with

music!

Larry Josefowski - Completion of Certified Lay Minister Program By: Donna W. Josefowski

On June 30th, the nine (9) members of the Peninsula Delaware conference held their

graduation ceremony from the Certified Lay Minister (CLM) course. The graduation, at-

tended by Bishop Johnson and conducted by the new CLM’s, was the culmination of

paths that were different for all graduates. Wesley Church member and Co-Lay Leader

Larry Josefowski, was one of the graduates.

The CLM program is a four (4) weekend course with a lot of homework on topics such

as the structure and history of the church, Spiritual Gifts, preparing sermons, and rela-

tionships. To enter the program, a person must have the recommendation of the pas-

tor, and the District Superintendent, as well a current Certified Lay Servant, which re-

quires a variety of courses on similar topics.

CLM’s in the Methodist Church serve in a variety of roles in a non-ordained position. In

some cases, they may be called to congregational leadership, where they pastor small

churches or charges, or assist the ordained or licensed pastor in their duties. In other

cases, they may be called on to lead specialized ministries, often at the district or con-

ference level.

Larry intends to continue in his leadership role here at Wesley, as well as to continue to

assist at the district and conference level on projects. Congratulations on this step in

his spiritual journey.

summer months. We are always grateful

for the commitment of our members

throughout the year who serve in Worship

in these and other roles. With Pastor Amy’s

vacation schedule this year, we were espe-

cially thankful to those who served during

the summer months including Tom Welch

and Larry Josefowski (Lay Speakers), as

well as Amy Kellen, Mike Petit de Mange,

Larry Josefowski, and Carol Gambone who

served as Worship Leaders during those

weeks in July and August.

The next opportunity for volunteers to serve (in all capacities) will be on Laity Sunday,

October 20th. Carol Gambone will be our Lay Speaker that day and the Worship Com-

mittee will be looking for volunteers in all aspects of the services so we can include as

many laity as possible on this important day.

DIGITAL SIGNAGE By: Donna Josefowski

One of the ideas that came out of our spring discussions on ways to make our church

more welcoming was the idea of digital signage. The idea was that we would have a

modern way of displaying relevant information to both visitors and members of our

church.

When former Co-Lay Leader Dave Evans offered a TV to the church, we saw an oppor-

tunity to test the concept, so our Assistant Lay Leader Jim Thistlewood made arrange-

ments to get it and mount it up one wall by the Fair Trade display. Co-Lay Leaders Lar-

ry and Donna Josefowski did the research on how to best display information, and we

now have a “do it yourself” digital sign.

The idea is that this is for information that doesn’t change that often. Eventually, if the

feedback is positive, we may add additional boards, perhaps with additional manage-

ment features, but for now, we thank all who helped get this project in place for our fall

season.

Focusing in on Our Vision

The Visioning Working Group

This Fall Wesley United Methodist Church will embark on a Congre-

gation-wide “Check-Up” of our Vision and Mission Statements with the goal of making any necessary adjustments to ensure that

these important references are accurate, relevant, and up to date. This Visioning Journey will provide abundant opportunities for each

member of our Church Family to contribute input, to share ideas, and to help define a collective Vision for Wesley.

Generally speaking, the Church’s Vision is a collaborative expression that captures the

essence of who we are as a church and through discernment, describes what God wants us to be. It represents a culmination of many conversations, discussions, and

listening sessions with congregants, friends, and strong program area leaders within

the Church. An effective Vision will paint a picture, it will solve a problem, it will stir the heart, and it will be God-sized! At its core, the Vision will inspire people to Chris-

tian Discipleship.

The journey to a collective Vision involves several key steps and will begin with Pastoral teaching on the importance of having a clear Vision. The process will involve engaging

the Congregation in meaningful discussions about the Strengths of the Church and the Needs of the Community. Key to a successful Visioning Process is discovery of places

where Church Strengths intersect with Community Needs.

On September 8th, Pastor Amy will be preaching on the subject of Visioning and why it has relevance and importance to Wesley today and into the future. This will be fol-

lowed through September and early October with a series of meetings with all of the various ministry groups of the Church to gather information concerning our congrega-

tional strengths. In October we will also be conducting at least two (2) congregation-

wide Visioning Workshops to gain additional input concerning our strengths and also what we see as the most pressing needs in the local community outside of our Church

doors. By early November, we believe common themes will have emerged lending themselves to the crafting of alternative “draft Vision Statements”. In late November

we envision the process culminating with the Members of Wesley selecting the Vision Statement that best describes who we are as a Church and what we do to advance

God’s called upon us.

Meeting dates are in the planning at this time and will be announced in the near future. Please plan to participate in this journey and help Wesley United Methodist Church fo-

cus in on Our Vision!

Trustees

Update By: Don Knox, Chair, Board of Trustees

2020 Budget Requests

All Budget requests for the 2020 budget are due to the

Finance Chair, Jake Aucoin by September 30, 2019. We rec-

ommends that everyone be as conservative as possible. Thank

you for everyone’s continued willingness to reduce spending

when possible. It is our goal to submit a balanced budget to

Church Council in November for fiscal year 2020. This will have

to be done through a continued effort to reduce costs.

We will also need you to include any Capital Budget requests. These would include big

ticket items that might be needed for your ministry. This will then be forwarded to the trustees

for consideration when formulating the building fund budget.

As usual, the summer months proved to be a busy time for Trustees projects to get accom-plished. Since the last Crier article in May, the following projects have been completed.

1. The carpet in the Search classroom in the Education Building was replaced with vinyl

tile flooring.

2. Four pillars and one hand rail at the front entrance of the Education Building were re-placed. The interior wall in the pre-school classroom on the first floor was replaced.

3. Air vents were installed in the closet door next to the elevator and closet door in Fel-lowship Hall to keep those areas cooler for storage of musical and sound system equipment.

4. An additional shower was installed in the Student Ministry Center. 5. Vinyl siding, soffit, fascia and window trim was installed on the Student Ministry

Center 6. Lastly, but very important, Johnson Controls replaced 23 fire extinguishers in the

Church and Education Bld. with newly recharged units.

As I continue to request, please remain diligent in securing our church facilities when leaving

by turning out lights, securing the exterior doors and activating the alarm system. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our facilities safe and secure.

Summer Recap

Although summer is generally a bit quieter at Wesley Church with vacations, summer camp for

the kids, family reunions, and more, we remained busy with a few extra activities. Our Out-

door Ministry Group hiked and biked at various locations (look for more activities in the fall),

we had a program about Online Civility, we journaled about the Sunday sermons, our Clothing

Closet partnered with a community event providing clothing vouchers, and we had a super suc-

cessful Vacation Bible School. If you have any ideas for events, let us know. Look for more

events coming in the fall …..

The Missions Committee believes ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive' and invites you to

serve those in need. There are many opportunities to share God’s amazing love in our local community and around the world. How will you serve?

Rise Against Hunger - Sunday October 6, 2019

Wesley UMC will once again be hosting a Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event in fellow-ship hall. This is the fourth time in the last five years that our church has come together to

package over 10,000 meals in only a couple of hours. There are volunteer opportunities for everyone of all ages and abilities. We are in need of about 75 people to come out and help package meals from 3pm - 5pm on that afternoon. Please sign up in worship during September

or contact the church office to RSVP for this event.

Second Saturday Community Meal On the second Saturday of every month Wesley UMC serves a delicious and free meal in fellow-

ship hall. This time of food and fellowship is open to anyone in our local community who would be blessed by a delicious meal in the company of others.

Please consider supporting this ministry by serving in one of these ways: Bake a homemade dessert and drop it off in the church kitchen labeled “Community

Meal.” Join our set up crew at 10:30 am to put up chairs and tables Join our clean-up crew at about 12:45 pm to take down chairs and tables

Join our food preparation crew from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Mission Trip Recap

On Saturday August 3rd a group of 8 people from Wesley Church went on a one day mission trip to Mission Central in Mechanicsburg, PA. Mission Central is one of six warehouses in the United States that collects, counts, verifies and stores the necessary resources for the United Method-

ist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to provide disaster relief and humanitarian aid to people all over the world. Our participants engaged in a day’s work that included verification of items in

cleaning buckets, preparation of homeless kits, and preparation of birthing kits to be shipped to developing countries. Our visit also included a tour of the warehouse facility where we learned about the many ministries housed in their building including bicycle repair, computer refurbish-

ing, diapers for parents in need, home furnishings for new renters/homeowners and many more. The day was finished off by a scenic ride home through the Lancaster area.

Wesley UMC Missions Endowment The Wesley UMC Missions Endowment Fund was created several years ago from a generous gift

to the church. The Missions Committee is seeking suggestions for local projects that will ideally benefit our community and involve volunteers from Wesley UMC. Please contact mis-

[email protected] or the church office for more information. Pecometh Fall Workday

The Missions Committee is planning a work day this fall to support Camp Pecometh. Wesley Church sponsors a house on the camp property that serves as the Nurse’s Station for campers

and provides housing for international students who come to work at Pecometh for the sum-mer. Volunteer opportunities include painting, light construction work, and general clean up. Please watch the church bulletin for the date of this opportunity to make improvements to

the house that Wesley Church cares for on the property.

Dover Interfaith Mission For Housing (DIMH)

Your small group is invited to provide a dinner meal to the grateful residents of our local Men's

Shelter located at 684 Forest St., Dover, DE. For more information about this volunteer oppor-

Help Keep Our Church Secure By: Don Knox and Jim Thistlewood

Secure the building after your group has met.

It is our job as good stewards of the church to make sure that the building is secure each day. When your meeting/gathering is over, it just takes a minute to check and see if you are the last in the building. If you are the last group in

the building, please take a walk through the entire building, making sure all lights are off and all doors are properly locked, before setting the alarm. There

is a check list below the alarm panel at the portico and the church entrance door (parking lot side). We are finding that these procedures are not being followed.

Access Cards and alarm codes are not to be used by anyone other than the person they are as-signed to. So, please do not share with others.

If you are a member of the staff or committee chair/co-chair and you do not have a code for the alarm, or access card, please see Jim Thistlewood or Michele Dryda to obtain one.

How can you help? Clean up after yourselves. When you have a meeting or a gathering, please make sure you leave the room in order. If you

have brought items into the room from elsewhere, please return them afterwards. If you bring items from the kitchen into a meeting, please return to the kitchen, wash and properly store them. Also, if you had food and the trash receptacle is overflowing, take a minute to tie the

bag off and take it to the dumpster. It just takes a few minutes, and with many helping hands our church can stay clean and uncluttered.

Deadlines for Sunday Bulletin and Crier Articles

Do you have something you would like to have published in either the Sunday bulletin

or the Crier? If so, the deadline for the Sunday Bulletin is Tuesday prior to the staff

meeting at 9:30 a.m. You ask why so early? All our printing of the bulletin and news-

letter is done in-house. The bulletin is reviewed at the staff meeting, corrections made,

proofed and ready for publication on Wednesday. Our team of faithful volunteers come

in first thing on Thursday to collate the bulletin for Sunday. The deadline for the Crier

is the 15th of each month. All committee chairs are expected to submit articles to

[email protected] by the 15th of the month.

Friendly Calendar Reminder

Numerous meetings are held daily at Wesley church. To

avoid conflicts with scheduling, if you are planning a

meeting, luncheon, wedding, etc., and using the church

facilities in any way, it is important that you call the

church office @ 678-9626.
