THE HELPING
HANDS
MINISTRY
WANTS TO
CHANGE
YOUR WORLD!
The Wesley UMC Helping Hands Ministry will be
working to Change the World of our
homebound and senior members the morning
of Saturday, May 20. Ministry team members
do chores such as cleaning gutters, trimming
bushes, replacing light bulbs, batteries or filters,
and other light home upkeep projects. If you do
not have family members or other helpers to
perform these tasks for you, please use the
comment section of your Making Connections
card to request help. Be sure to include your
name(s), projects to be done, and your address
and phone number so we can send the correct
number of Helping Hands volunteers to provide
this service to you. You can also call or email the
The Month of May is not only teaming with flowers blooming all around, but much will be blooming at Charleston Wesley as well! Sunday, May 14 – Be sure to join us for Mother’s Day. Whether you bring your mom to Wesley to worship or she brings you, we want to honor our moms and the women in our lives who have had significant impact on us.
Saturday, May 20 – Change the World Day May 20 is the day United Methodists all over the nation are moving beyond the walls of the church and into local communities to be a blessing. For the first couple of weeks in May, we will have sign-up sheets in the hallway next to the Information Center. You are encouraged to look at the different areas and sign up to serve in the area that most speaks to you. Buy a Change the World T-shirt online or in the hallway and wear it proudly as we seek to make a difference in our community on that day! Sunday, May 21 – To celebrate the day of service and to honor our graduating seniors, we will have a potluck dinner after second service in the Fellowship Hall. For those who served on Change the World Day, it will be a time to celebrate together. For those who couldn’t serve, it will be an opportunity to talk with those who did, celebrate our graduates, and simply enjoy a time of fellowship. Also on Sunday, May 21 – Rev. Adrian Garcia will be speaking at both services. Adrian is a United Methodist pastor in our conference serving at Peoria First UMC. Adrian works on a daily basis with the Hispanic community in Peoria and knows firsthand what that community is living with on a daily basis. In between services, during the Sunday school time, Adrian will be in the sanctuary for a presentation and Q&A. Don’t miss this great weekend of worship, as we seek to better understand what immigrants in the US experience. Sunday, May 28 is Memorial Day Sunday. Last year, we celebrated by releasing butterflies in memory of someone who has joined the Church Triumphant and to celebrate the hope and promise of the resurrection for each of us! We hope you will join us for this very special weekend.
Our May mission project is the “Our Conference/Our Kids” endowment sponsored by the United Methodist Illinois Great Rivers Conference. The 2017 Bishop's Golf Open, was held April 21 near Auburn, Illinois, and was the soft opening for the “Our Conference/Our Kids” endowment. The major kick-off for this fundraiser will be at Annual Conference in June. The plan is to raise $2,500,000 for an endowment that will fund the “spiritual life” programs at our Conference Children's Homes which include: The Baby Fold, Chaddock Children's Home, Cunningham Children's Home, Lessie Bates David Neighborhood House, and the United Methodist Children's Home. If you would like to help with this effort, please make your check to Wesley UMC with Kid's Endowment on the memo line or visit our church website at www.charlestonwesley.org and click on the $ button at the bottom of the page. If you prefer to make a cash donation, there are blue mission offering envelopes in the pew backs. Thank you very much for your support.
