Despite what the song “Wonderful World” says, there’s a lot we know about history. But there are still some pretty big gaps in our knowledge, for the simple reason that a lot of information about the past gets lost over time. Wars, fires, floods, deliberate destruction, or just plain carelessness—all of these factors and more contribute to some pretty fascinating historical mysteries.
Together, we’ll discuss the latest reliable evidence and theories for some major events, peo-ple, and buildings that fascinate all of us. Who were the first Americans, and when—and how—did they arrive? How on earth did Stonehenge get built? What did Cleopatra look like? What caused the Salem witchcraft outbreak of 1692? All of these, and more, will be exam-ined during this fun and fascinating talk.
Among the enduring mysteries of American politics is the failure of so many Jewish voters to resemble other groups who are similarly situated economically. For the past century, the Re-publican Party has generally represented the interests of the middle class and the prosper-ous. The Democratic Party has generally been the voice of the working class and the poor, although in recent years new trends have developed in some parts of the country. Yet the fact is, even as the majority of Jews ascended from immigrant poverty into the comfortable niche of the upper-middle class, they have retained their loyalty to the Democratic Party and its lib-eralism. A further examination of voting patterns and of possible explanations can shed light on this anomaly.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF JAZZ: AMERICA’S GREATEST ORIGINAL ART FORM
Key to the history of jazz is its connection to recorded sound. Jazz was the first musical genre shaped by modern sound technology — the first world-wide music phenomenon. Exploring the various facets and histories of jazz is the central goal of this course. Each class session will focus on understanding the shifting meanings of the music as it moves through various cultural/political contexts. Together, we will listen to a range of recordings — all with the goal of discovering what makes jazz so vital to America’s multi-faceted identity.
The most sacred of all American rituals—and the most crucial test of democracy—may be the passing of the torch from outgoing to incoming presidents—especially in cases when incum-bents lose to challengers. Ever since the founding era, these moments have occasionally been fraught, frosty, and occasionally even dangerous. This talk explores the best and worst of transitions—and the kindest and sorest of losers and winners—as it covers John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan and Abraham Lincoln, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt, the extraordinary example of Jim-my Carter both arriving and departing, and of course the insurrection two weeks before the departure of Donald Trump.
The first golden age of American musical theater gave rise to many of our greatest songwrit-ers, including the Gershwin brothers, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. But in that “set” there was only one woman: Dorothy Fields. Dorothy wrote lyrics for composers Jerome Kern, Ar-thur Schwartz and Cy Coleman, and scripts for Cole Porter and Irving Berlin in a forty-year career that included triumphs in Hollywood (“Swing Time”) and on Broadway (“Annie Get Your Gun” and “Sweet Charity”). Among her best-known lyrics are: “I Can’t Give You Any-thing but Love,” “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” “Hey, Big Spender” and the song for which she and Jerome Kern won the Academy Award for Best Song, “The Way You Look Tonight.”
This class has been produced in conjunction with the Kaufman Music Center’s Broadway Close Up series, and will feature performances by Sean Hartley and Gabrielle Stravelli, ac-companied by Pianist/Musical Director Greg Jarrett. Songs will include: “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love,” “He Had Refinement,” “I’m Way Ahead,” and “The Way You Look To-night.”
She has been called a witch and a saint, a brilliant scientist and a fraud. Libertarians falsely blame her for deaths from malaria around the world, while environmentalists lionize her vision and her courageous decision to take on the chemical industry. The contrasting perspectives on Rachel Carson are as vivid today as they were when she first published her science-driven parable, Silent Spring, in 1962.
Carson was a beloved nature writer, whose 1951 book The Sea Around Us was a bestseller, but she is perhaps best known for calling attention to the environmental risks of DDT. After her death in 1964, she continued to play a critical role in public policy, as a voice and a symbol.
In this presentation, Professor Lindee will explore the life and work of this sometimes-maligned woman scientist, considering her personal story, her popular writing, and her impact on the rise of environmentalism. Her perspectives on environmental risk have been validated by mod-ern science, and in the end, she produced some of the most influential ideas of the twentieth century.

Just for Fun
A little boy asked his father, “How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The little boy ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family.”

Interested in your family history? Senior Planet NYC and Center for Jewish Histo-ry are hosting a new genealogy workshop series on three consecutive Thursdays. Looking for a meaningful project to tackle while you’re staying home? Are you inter-ested in learning more about your family’s history prior to their arrival in the U.S.? Have you been meaning to get your family photos and documents preserved for future generations? If you answered yes to all three, this is the series for you! March 4 - 2-3pm: Tracing your Roots at Home, Level I: Online Genealogy Basics
Looking for a meaningful project to tackle while you’re staying home? You can find a wealth of information about the lives of your ancestors and the places in which they lived from your own computer. Moriah Amit, the Center for Jewish History’s senior genealogy librarian, will offer her expert tips and resources for getting started with your online family history research and answer your questions.
March 11 - 2-3pm: Tracing your Roots at Home, Level II: Research Beyond the U.S.
Are you interested in learning more about your family’s history prior to their arrival in the U.S. or about a branch of your family that never emigrated to the U.S.? In this follow-up to the Online Genealogy Basics workshop, Moriah Amit will show you how to broaden your family history search beyond the basic databases to specific online resources for places of origin worldwide. In addition, she’ll share her tips for finding and requesting records from your coun-try of origin that are not available online. March 18 - 2-3pm: Preserving your Family Photos and Documents
Have you been meaning to get your family photos and documents under control and to en-sure that they will be preserved for future generations? While it may seem like a daunting process, it’s not insurmountable if you tackle it step by step. Tyi Marx, the Center for Jewish History’s senior reference services librarian will explain how you can organize, digitize, and safely store your family photos and documents through manageable, affordable steps. Then, she’ll answer your questions about your specific preservation needs and challenges. We ask that you attend all three sessions to get the most out of the series. If you're interested in attending, please click below to RSVP!

What better way to learn about the cul-ture of another place than through the eyes of someone who grew up there? Through the Global Guides Program, the Museum offers virtual tours led by Philadelphians who grew up in coun-tries around the world! In addition to sharing historical information about the museum artifacts on display, our guide from Africa will combine personal expe-riences and stories to interpret objects from their home country.
An in-depth look at the complex history and mystery of England’s start in North America. Join park rangers to explore the events and unknowns surrounding the first English colony in North America. The program begins at the historic Waterside Theater and will cover the multiple English voyages, the interactions between the English and Native people and some theories about what happened to the Lost Colony. The program will continue with a tour to the archae-ology site of the 1585 scientific workshop (this is not an active dig site but rather where known parts of the story exist) and the earthen fort which is a reproduction of one from the 1580's. Continuing through the forest and ending at the north shore of the island provides an oppor-tunity to discuss the, yet to be discovered, location where the colonists built their homes.
