Competition in the local money transfer business
will heighten after Airtel Kenya unveiled its revamped mobile commerce service. Trading under the brand name Airtel Money, the new mobile commerce platform has undergone a complete transformation ranging from the access menu to distribution network. “We are not just launching a brand name today. The Airtel Money mobile commerce platform has undergone a complete transformation starting with your first interaction with it, which is a simple, easy to use customer friendly access menu that makes it faster and convenient for customers and dealers to carry out transactions. The platform provides consumers with a robust offering of products that cuts across mobile banking, service payments, airtime top up and money transfer services.” said Mr. Rene Meza, MD of Airtel Kenya, adding that Airtel Money is further supported by a state of the art platform
ensuring system stability and a great customer experience. The service has a new easy to use menu, making it faster and convenient for customers and dealers to carry out transactions. To increase uptake of the service, more than 6,000 agents have been recruited countrywide and the number is expected to grow to 8,000 by the end of the year. The vast dealer network will now be propped by corporate agents to enhance availability and reliability of the services countrywide. These include banks, bank agents, supermarket chains and Posta outlets: “We have signed up close to 100 business partners, whom we have engaged for various services including bulk payments, collection accounts and super dealership,” he added.
Mr. Meza said besides the lucrative money transfer business, the new features on Airtel money will enable the company to fully tap into the mobile commerce business in Kenya.
Airtel ventured into the local mobile commerce business two years ago under the Zap brand. The service provides e-commerce solutions including online payments, online banking, utility bill payments for electricity, DSTV, and water. Airtel Money’s extensive network has been complimented by corporate agents to enhance availability and reliability of the service across the country. Airtel Money has signed up close to 100 business partners who provide various services including bulk payments, collection accounts and super dealerships. Through Airtel Money, customers can send a minimum of KES50 at a cost of KES5 to a maximum of KES70,000 per transaction for the cost of KES25. Customers can also send money to other networks at only KES25.Mr. Rene Meza announced a launch offer that enables its customers to send money to any network in Kenya free of charge. He also announced a 10% bonus airtime value on every deposit amount to a
maximum of KES35,000 for customers using the service for the very first time. Mr. Meza commented on the offer : “This is our unique way of saying welcome with the hope that it will put a lasting smile on the faces of our deserving customers during these hard times.” The offer ends on 10 September 2011.

ATI took part in the signing of a historic deal in Tanzania. The deal is a $250 million seven-year loan facility arranged by a syndicate of local and global financiers, an Export Credit Agency and ATI - Africa’s multilateral credit and investment insurer. The government of Tanzania will use the funds for infrastructure
development, mainly in the areas of power and roads. This marks thefirst time Tanzania has sought commercial financing for its long-term development needs. ATI was selected to insure a $50 million segment of the larger facility based on its key strengths: strong capitalization reinforcing
ATI’sability to pay claims; an investment grade rating by Standard & Poor’srating agency; an ability to mobilize global insurers; and a Preferred Creditor Status, which acts as a deterrent against governments causingclaims in any ATI-backed deal. “Our unique structure - we are the only multilateral insurer with a PanAfrican focus - has helped us attract global financial and insurance partners who, in many instances would only invest in or insure a projectwith ATI’s participation. This is our value added. We are able to pave the way for increased financial and insurance capacity in countries that might otherwise be shunned by the international market as too high risk,” commented George Otieno, ATI’s Chief
Tanzania government gets $250 million seven-year loan facility
Executive Officer. A combination of economic uncertainty in many donor countries and agrowing interest in Africa from international investors may force somecountries to look to alternative sources such as facilities like this for financing. Traditionally Sub-Saharan Africa countries have looked to donor funding and more recently, bond issuances to raise capital for infrastructure finance. But with decaying road, water and power networksthat will require at least $93 billion a year to modernise, Tanzania’sinitiative may be seen as a precursor to a larger trend as African countries strive to meet their development objectives.Donor aid statistics are encouraging but they do not take into account gaps in what is eventually received as well as recent price fluctuations
of basic food commodities. While 2010 saw donor aid reach its highest level ever at $128.7 billion, a 6.5% increase over 2009, there is a gap in what has been promised and what has been received. Africa has only received $11 billion of the $25 billion pledged in 2005 at the G8 summitin Gleneagles. In anticipation of growing demand, ATI has broadened its global networkto include partnership agreements with Germany’s Official Export CreditAgency, Euler Hermes; the Export Credit Guarantee Company of Egypt(ECGC); America’s Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC); theSaudi Fund for Development; and the Islamic Corporation
for Insurance of Investments and Export Credit (ICIEC). And as a signal of ATI’s growing importance in the OECD market, SACE, Italy’s Export Credit Agency became a member of ATI with a $10 million investment in 2010. Tanzania is a founding member of ATI. The country received close to $13million worth of insurance support in 2010 covering the commercial andpolitical risks of infrastructure projects.
In 2010, ATI doubled its support of infrastructure projects over 2008figures insuring projects in African member countries valued in thehundreds of millions of dollars.

General Motors Delivers Buses to Eastern Shuttle SACCO
General Motors East Africa (GMEA) has delivered 3 NQR MAX 37
seat buses to Eastern Shuttle SACCO in line with the Public Service Vehicles (PSV) Vision 2030 initiative which aims at educating PSV
owners on the benefits of using high capacity buses and operating within organized groups such as SACCOS. The vehicles were flagged off from the Garden Hotel in Machakos by GMEA Managing Director Ms. Rita Kavashe during the
countrywide PSV Vision 2030 campaign.
Ms. Kavashe said GMEA had also played a key role in transforming the public transport sector through a Public Private Partnership with the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing, key financiers and insurance companies.
The PSV Vision 2030 campaign seeks to modernise the transport system in Kenya’s main urban centers through promoting use of high capacity buses, hence reducing vehicle congestion in the urban areas.
Matatu Owners Association Chairman Mr. Simon Kimutai called upon industry players to form SACCOs that promote organization and enhance accountability
in the industry. He further applauded Eastern Shuttles for their commitment towards the PSV Vision 2030.
The 37-seat Isuzu NQR MAX Bus has been assembled with passenger comfort, safety and affordability, making it the ultimate intra-city bus. Isuzu buses are engineered for local operating conditions and they are durable. Ms. Kavashe reiterated that GMEA will offer after-sales support through their countrywide dealer network. She also added that the company is committed to providing world class customer service.
GMEA is located in Nairobi, Kenya, and serves the Eastern Africa region covering the countries of Burundi, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Eagle Africa Insurance Brokers i, Jubilee Insurance Company in student accident policy.
THE WEEKLY SMARTSHOPPER 22nd - 29th August 2011
www.smartshopperske.com pg5
By Peter MusaYou are a parent who keeps wondered what could happen if your three-year-old pneumonia-prone child is left in the hands of a learning institution? Eagle Africa Insurance Brokers in partnership with Jubilee Insurance Company have come up with a student accident policy. The cover will be for children in learning institutions between the age of 3 and 20 years. The comprehensive cover which will be undertaken in learning institution will cover the risks when the pupils or the students are in the hands of the institution including travels.School going children face a myriad of risks on the way to and from school including road accidents, playground
injuries, sudden illness amongst others. Eagle Africa’s Managing Director Sam Ncheeri said: “One only needs to turn on the TV or read the papers to see the dangers our children are exposed to everyday. Accident insurance can give peace of mind to parents and learning institutions because you know that any medical emergencies will be taken care of.” All these result in unexpected medical expenses incurred from the first response to hospitalization. High cost of living and low insurance penetration in Kenya means that most parents are unaware of availability of insurance, or are unable to afford insurance for school going children.“For as little as Ksh 750 or Ksh450 per year translating
Tatu City to Receive Key Regulatory Approvals
continued from page 2to Ksh2 per day, parents and learning institutions will no longer have to worry about medical expenses arising when the child is at school,” said Ncheeri at the launch of the product. “We will work with providers in healthcare and evacuation
services to ensure flexibility and accessibility to the necessary services.”The benefits will include medical expenses following accident, permanent total disability, tuition of up to 16 weeks following absence from school due to accidents, artificial limbs, dental treatment and loss or damage to personal expenses. Additional benefits include accidental death and funeral expenses.
Eagle Africa Ins. Brokers is a leader in product development in the insurance industry having launched the Ksh35a day medical cover, and in the rolling out of the informal sector Ksh20 a day scheme.
