If you would like to help, it would be the best holiday gift ever. Call Care Links 399-3262 to learn the way you can give support to an older adult.

FAMILY OWNED SINCE 1997

Thanksgiving this year is about as late in November as it can be so we’re still a week away from the annual welcoming of a tree into our homes. If you step back and try to be objective, the practice of installing a tree inside our home at this time of year seems a bit bizarre. How did all this get started; and when? The symbolism and use of trees as decorations at this time of year are far older than many of us suspect. It is known, for instance, that pre-Christian Romans displayed decorated evergreens (oak trees which are evergreen in that part of the world). They lit the tree with candles and often topped the tree with a sun symbol. The ancient Celts of the British Isles also ornamented oak trees with apples and candles to offer thanks to the sun during the solstice period. Many of us can still remember when the Christmas tree wasn’t put up until Christmas Eve. This tradition likely had its roots (no pun intended, well...maybe) in the English tradition of bringing home the Yule log on Christmas Eve. The Yule log was generally a large stump, often including the roots, and was decorated with mistletoe, holly and other greenery. The log was lighted with a bit of the previous year’s log (thus protecting the house from fire for the upcoming year) and needed to be kept burning for at least twelve hours to insure continued good fortune. The evergreen tree as the tree of choice for solstice celebrating appears to have its origins in the Christianizing of the Germanic tribes of Eastern Europe. Some of the earliest accounts tell of St. Boniface dedicating the fir tree to the Christ Child with the oath “You are the light of the world, a tree ever green” to counter the sacred oak of Odin in the eighth century. Other accounts credit Martin Luther as the first to bring home a cut evergreen tree and decorate it with candles that symbolize the stars in the sky over Bethlehem the night Christ was born. Hundreds of years passed until the tradition of decorating evergreen trees at Christmas became common. It wasn’t until 1841 when King Albert displayed a decorated evergreen tree in his palace that the tradition took hold in English speaking countries. Like the American people, American Holiday celebrations have become a melting pot of customs and traditions brought to our shores from the older cultures of our forefathers. The evergreen, ancient symbol of life ever lasting is still included as the bright focal point of a celebration of rebirth, light and life. Whatever the origins of the practice, I love the smell of a fresh Balsam Fir when I bring it inside. The trick is to keep the tree hydrated so the needles stay on and the tree stay fresh and fragrant. The first step is to get a fresh tree. When you’re out in the tree lot picking out your tree, bent the little branch tips to make sure they are supple, not brittle. With Thanksgiving as late as it is this year, all the firs should be in fine shape. Beware of spruce trees which are notorious for falling apart quickly once they’re cut and brought inside. Next, make sure to make a fresh cut on the base of the tree right before you bring it inside. The reason this is so important is because the tree has sucked air into the bottom-most cells of the trunk. Even if the tree is placed in water, it can’t absorb it because the first cells at the base are clogged with air. A fresh cut exposes fresh cells that can absorb water and sent it along to the cells above right out to the branches and needles. Most tree lots will offer to make this fresh cut for you. This is fine if you’re going to rush home and get the tree into water within and hour. If it will be longer than that, you might as well wait and make your own fresh cut on the tree at home. Make sure that your tree stand is clean before you put your tree into it. If your tree stand is like mine, it spends most of its time in the shed gathering dust. If you don’t clean this dust out, it will mix with the water the tree is absorbing and clog up those all important cells that you just exposed at the base of the truck when you made your fresh cut. When you place the tree into the stand, fill the stand up with very hot water. Hot water is absorbed more quickly than cold water so the tree will re-hydrate as quickly as possible. You don’t need to use hot water every time you add water to the stand; just the first time. Make sure that the tree stand always has water in it. If you let it run dry, the tree will suck air into the bottom cells again and it won’t be able to absorb water until another fresh cut is made. This isn’t likely to happen once the tree is decorated. Remember: Fresh Tree, Fresh Cut and Fresh Water. Thanks for the read.

As the cost of living contin-ues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much more expensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shop-pers to overextend them-selves fi nancially come the holiday season.

According to a recent Gallup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790 per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercussions for the rest of the year.

In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch them-selves thin on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. One way to make shopping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dic-tate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact when approaching the subject of gift limits. Dis-cuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reason-able amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a fi gure and then determine the aver-age, using that fi gure as your spending limit.

Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to aff ord their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and you’re spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.

When no such limit is es-

HOW TO ESTABLISH GIFT

SPENDING LIMITS

tablished, you may go over-board to compensate, even if you cannot aff ord to do so.

Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for

dinner or suggest going on vacation together to make better use of your collective funds. A well-timed extend-ed family vacation in lieu of gift exchanges may alleviate the stress of the holiday sea-son, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.

Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each person to work with can make for a more peace-ful holiday season by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shop-ping.

Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to reconnect and exchange gifts. While the popular-ity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not always eco-friendly or timely, as gifts bought on-line must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that last-minute shoppers may not have.

The benefi ts of shopping locally go beyond conve-nience and the chance to reduce your carbon foot-print. The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefi t your community and the peo-ple who call it home.

Local economy

When men and women shop locally, they are put-

SHOP LOCALLY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

ting money back into their local communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbor in-stead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbors, so shopping local can strengthen the local econo-my by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your community fail to support local small businesses.

C o m m u n i t y identity

Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood identity, and that identity can create a

stronger sense of commu-nity among you and your neighbors. In addition, a unique community identity can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of local real estate

while also attracting more people to local businesses in your neighborhood.

Uniqueness of gifts

The gifts you buy when shopping locally also can benefi t your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national

chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell more home-made items than their national competitors. Re-cipients of such items may fi nd such gifts more thoughtful than mass produced items bought from national chains, and the uniqueness of homemade gifts

may encourage the gifts’ recipients to visit your com-munity and do some shop-ping, further benefi tting

your local economy.

Customer service

The accessibility of cus-tomer service is another oft-overlooked benefi t of shopping locally. When buying from national chains, especially during the holiday season when such businesses may be overwhelmed with orders, making contact with cus-tomer service departments can be a trying exercise in patience. Long wait times on the phone or online can make the process of con-tacting customer service extremely frustrating. But such frustration is rare when buying from local business-es, as consumers can simply take their products into the store, where employees can immediately address their concerns. In addition, buy-

ing locally makes it more

convenient for friends and

family members who also

live in your community to

return their gifts.

Toys will once again be high on kids’ wish lists this holi-day season, when advertise-ments will highlight this year’s most coveted gifts. But just because a particular toy is this year’s must-have item does not mean it’s the safest gift for kids of all ages.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were an estimated 265,000 toy-related injuries treated at hospitals in the United States in 2012. Of those injuries, an estimated 72 percent happened to children younger than 15 years of age while 69 per-cent aff ected kids 12 years of age or younger. In addition, an estimated 34 percent of those injuries happened to children younger than fi ve years of age. Many toy-relat-ed deaths were the result of drowning and asphyxiation.

No one wants to think about injuries or deaths involving kids, but holiday shoppers must keep safety in mind when purchasing children’s gifts to safeguard young-sters from injury.

Balloons

The CPSC notes that balloons are the leading cause of suf-focation death in children. Children may swallow bro-ken or uninfl ated balloons, which can then stick to the throat and airway, making it impossible to breathe. Holi-day shoppers should avoid giving balloons to children age eight or younger. In ad-dition, dispose of balloons if or when they defl ate.

Painted toys

Lead paints and toys con-taining lead are not legal in North America, but that doesn’t mean that imported toys are made in adherence to stringent safety guide-

EMPHASIZE SAFETY WHEN BUYING GIFTS FOR CHILDREN

lines. Before buying a toy, confi rm that it is lead-free, as exposure to lead can cause serious neurological prob-lems, especially in young children.

Button batteries

Button batteries, or the small-sized batteries found in some toys, watches and hearing aids, can be hazard-ous. Batteries can become stuck and cause chemical burns.

Adults should always verify that the battery compart-ments on children’s toys are secured with screws. Other products that have remote controls may contain batter-ies that are not adequately secured. In addition to but-ton batteries, AAA batteries, which are small, can be haz-ardous to kids.

Magnets

Small magnets can be swal-lowed and become lodged in the digestive system of a child. If two or more magnets or a magnet and metal com-ponent are swallowed, they can attract to one another through intestinal walls. This can cause blockages, perfo-rations and infections. Avoid toys that use small magnets, and check the CPSC web-site to ensure that magnetic toys are not among recalled products.

SIDEBAR: Toy Safety Tips

• Read the packaging to en-sure that toys are age-appro-priate.

• Avoid projectile toys or those with sharp points.

• Store toys that belong to older children out of reach of younger kids.

• Don’t buy toys with remov-able parts that can be swal-lowed.

• Only buy toys made from nontoxic materials.

• Only buy fabric toys that are labeled as fl ame-resistant or fl ame-retardant.

• Only buy stuff ed toys that are washable.

• Graciously decline hand-me-down toys that may not meet current safety stan-dards.

The holiday season gener-ates a lot of waste, and many things contribute to this ex-cess of trash this time of year.

• Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfi lls after the holi-day season. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and us-ers of plastic bags can recycle those bags at appropriate re-ceptacles.

• Four million tons of waste is attributed to shopping bags

HOLIDAY WASTE BY THE NUMBERSand wrapping paper. Recy-cling paper or looking for re-usable items in which to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste.

• Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each year for Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to recycle it so it can be turned into mulch instead of being sent to a landfi ll. Otherwise, consider buying a potted tree and planting it after the holidays.

• Nearly 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold and exchanged each year in the United States alone. This many cards can fi ll a football fi eld 10 stories high. One less card sent per person can save roughly 50,000 cu-bic yards of paper. Electronic greetings are another way to save paper.

• If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

VISION PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN

by Lawrence Cusma, OD9 Gleason Road

Scotia, NY 12302

EYES ON HEALTH

For further information, call our office at 399-6368

Vision problems in children tend to emerge between 18 months and 4 years. The two most common vision issues are:

• A crossed or wandering eye, which effects approximately 3% to 5% of children. Symptoms include an eye that drifts or wanders or appears crossed in respect to the other eye. Although the problem seems like a vision issue, it is actually the brain’s wiring that is at fault.

• Uneven focus, where one eye is more farsighted than the other, affects 2% to 3% of kids. The vision problem is harder to detect, because young children do not know that their vision is compromised. Because it is all they have known, they won’t complain of vision difficulties.

Uneven focus or a slightly wandering eye may not seem too alarming, but if either condition goes untreated, a child’s stronger eye - the one that sees further, or focuses better - slowly becomes the dominant eye. The brain starts ignoring the images from the weaker eye, and stops developing the nerve connections leading to it. By the age of 9 or 10, the vision loss in the weaker eye is usually permanent.

The compromised vision in the weaker eye, called amblyopia or “lazy eye”, can be reversed or stopped, but it needs to be caught early with a professional eye examination.
