century. Both tours will be offered two times a night at 7:00pm and

LOST MOHAWK VALLEY PRESENTED BY BOB CUDMORE
SCHENECTADY Lost Mo-hawk Valley, presented by Bob Cudmore, on
Saturday, October 17, at 2:00pm at Schenectady County Histori-cal
Society, 32 Washington Ave., Schenectady. Admis-sion: $5.00, free
for members of the Schenectady County Historical Society. Life in
the Mohawk Valley today is vastly different from gen-erations ago.
Long gone are the factory whistles calling workers to their shifts
in old mill towns like Amsterdam. Fort Plain still benefits
from
little-known inventor Wil-liam Yerdon, and baseball player
George Burns, with ties to Gloversville and Uti-ca, was so skilled
that fans called left field Burnsville. Few realize that a local
art-ist shared a special bond with musician John Philip Sousa. The
Tamarack Play-house was once the venue of spectacular theatricals,
and as time goes on there are fewer alumni to remem-ber Amsterdams
Bishop Scully High School. In Lost Mohawk Valley, Bob Cud-
more shows that while lost, these and other compelling stories
no longer need be forgotten. Join writer, media personality and
teacher Bob Cudmore as he explores the lost history of the Mohawk
Valley! For more information, please contact Curator Mary Zawacki
at [email protected] or 518-374-0263. The
Schenectady County Historical Society is wheelchair accessible,
with off-street parking available.

UPPER UNION STREET HARVEST FEST & ART SHOW
SCHENECTADY Upper Union Street, Schenectady, wel-comes fall with
the annual Harvest Fest & Art Show on Satur-day, October 3 from
10am 3pm along a four-block corridor of Union Street from Garner to
Palmer Avenues. The event, which is free and open to the public is
a way for members of the Upper Union Street Business Improvement
District (BID) to show their appreciation to current clients and
custom-ers while showcasing the shopping district to new visitors.
Something new for the Upper Union Street Harvest Fest & Art
Show this year comes from Stockade Station, a local arts
consortium. Several member artists will be painting plein air at
strategic Upper Union Street locations. They welcome visitors
looking over their shoulders and chatting about art and the iconic
Upper Union Street cityscapes that they will be preserving on
canvas. Tesoros Caf will feature an artists meet & greet for
the current exhibit of Magical Mandalas, original works by Marion
C. Leap, MFA. Also worth noting, our Upper Union Street neighbor,
St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish Youth Ministry will have its annual
Vendor Fair in the school gym from 10am 3pm during Upper Union
Street Harvest Fest & Art Show. Visitors are encouraged to
patronize both events and may park at St. Kateri. Its a short walk
on new sidewalks between the Upper Union Street Harvest Fest and
St. Kateri. Sponsors for the Upper Union Street Harvest Fest &
Art Show include Schenectady County Arts Incentive, Trustco Bank,
First Niagara, Head to Tail Pet Wellness Center, and Ger-shons
Deli. For further information: call Madelyn Thorne at 518 727-6689

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted when
everything is working correctly. Wheels and sus-pension systems
bear the weight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough
roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some wear and
tear is to be expected.
Many drivers know to moni-tor their tire pressure, but its also
important to check for worn treads and inspect tires for punctures
or dam-age. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essen-tial
for a comfortable and smooth ride.
Balance
Balancing tires involves equalizing the weight of the combined
tire and wheel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the
road. Tires are mounted on the wheel assembly, and the chances of
this assembly having precise weight dis-tribution is nearly
impos-sible without a little help. According to Discount Tire, the
slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce,
can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires wobble, causing
noticeable vibrations.
Mechanics will test tire balance by putting it on
MAINTAIN TIRE BALANCE AND
ALIGNMENT FOR A SMOOTH RIDE
a balancing machine. The machine will spin the tire and
determine the tires heaviest point. Counteract-ing weights will be
placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of weight.
Lead weights are often used, but some are being phased out for
other metals, such as zinc, be-cause of the medical and
environmental implications of lead.
Tires that are not balanced will not only cause vibra-tion, they
also can lead to uneven wear.
Alignment
Tire alignment is another way to reduce wear on tires
and help avoid steering and pulling problems. Bridges-tone Tires
defines tire align-ment as an adjustment of the vehicles
suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its
wheels.
When tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven
tread wear. Mis-aligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to
the left or right. Drivers who notice their steering wheel is
off-center or vibrating when they are driving may need to adjust
their tires align-ment.
Camber, or the inward or outward angle of the tire when viewed
from the front of the vehicle, will be
adjusted. In addition, toe,
or the extent to which the
tires turn inward or outward
when viewed from above,
will be adjusted. Caster an-
gle also helps balance steer-
ing, stability and cornering.
Caster is the angle of your
steering axis when viewed
from the side of your ve-
hicle.
When tires are balanced
correctly and aligned, ve-
hicles will offer a smooth
ride with little to no vibra-
tions. Having tires serviced
can maximize their perfor-
mance and lifespan.
