THE WEEKLY PENNYSAVER - WKLY April 7, 2011 w w w. c r w n e w s p a p e r s . c o m

Hopefully by the time you’re reading this we’ll have gotten a break for the lingering cold and wind. At least most of the snow has melted except for the more tenacious parking lot “bergs”. Hopefully April’s showers can melt them and May’s fl owers after all. In spite of the lingering coldt is nice to have put winter behind us even though we could see another fl ake or two. Spring will not be denied much lon-ger.!

During last few years perennials have become very popular. I suppose that this is due to the theory that, since perennials come up every year, folks can avoid “all that work” involved with planting annuals that need to be planted every year. I would prefer to think that our gardening tastes have become more sophisticated as the years go by. Perhaps we’ve learned to appreciate perennials during all stages of their development rather than demanding the “instant gratifi cation” that annuals provide. I myself would never exclude either from my garden. “Variety is the spice of life” as they say. While it’s true that perennials are a more permanent addition to the fl owerbed, annuals, with their unending show of fl owers will always have a place in my fl owerbeds. How could I resist the feathery foliage and cheerful fl owers of cosmos or the durable height of cleome? How can you top the color impatiens or coleus bring to the shady corners of your yard? The little effort involved in planting annuals is amply rewarded by the show annuls provide.

Anyway…with the planting season starting up, I am compelled to mention a product that I won’t plant a perennial, shrub, tree, or hardy fl owerbulb without.

What if you could buy a product that was high in phosphorus, lasted in the soil long enough to feed your plants for 4 or 5 years and was 100% organic? Sounds great doesn’t it? What is this amazing new product? Just something that you great-grandmother or great grandfather probably used…BONE MEAL!

To appreciate bone meal, you have to understand the importance of phos-phorus to your plants. Phosphorus is the middle of the three numbers on any fertil-izer product (remember?). It stimulates root growth and fl ower and fruit production. There are many sources of phosphorus. Some are rapidly available as in soluble plant foods like Miracle-Gro. Others are slower as in 5-10-5, a popular vegetable food.

The steamed, sterilized phosphorus in bone meal is not a chemical fertilizer and is not soluble at all. Bone meal MUST be mixed into the soil at planting time so the roots of the plant will grow into and through the bone meal. This provides the plant with a source of phosphorus that the plant can use as it needs. New gardeners become aware of the importance of bone meal when they plant their fi rst fall bulbs like daffodils and tulips. More experienced gardeners realize the value of adding bone meal to the soil whenever they are planting ANYTHING that they expect to return every year. I always add bone meal when I’m planting trees, rose bushes, ev-ergreens, fl owering shrubs, evergreens, fruit trees, and, especially, perennial plants. The only time I DON’T add bone meal is when I’m planting annuals or vegetables that will only grow for one season.

Adding bone meal to you peat moss/soil blend in the bottom of your plant-ing hole below shrubs trees, bulbs and perennials insures that the root system will establish itself in the shortest possible time. If the root system is strong and vigorous, the rest of the plant will follow suit. During the active part of the season I still use my other plant foods to provide nitrogen and potassium but, early and late in the season when substantial root growth is occurring, I know my bone meal is down there help-ing the plant take advantage of the cool weather.

Remember that bone meal can’t burn like a chemical fertilizer, so it’s very safe when placed near the roots. Anyone who’s had the experience of planting fall bulbs without bone meal only to watch them get smaller and smaller each year can appreciate the value of adding bone meal. As I’ve been known to say, “You’d be crazy to overlook the benefi t of adding bone meal in all permanent planting situa-tions.” Once again, thanks for the read.

Motorcycle Safety Prevents AccidentsMotorcycles have been around for decades and so have riding enthusiasts. Through all of the in-novations and motorcycle design changes, safety while riding re-mains of the utmost importance.

Very often motorcycle accidents are attributed to lack of rider skill. The National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration says that there are roughly 4 million regis-tered motorcycle riders on Amer-ican roadways. There may be many others who are unlicensed who still hop on a motorcycle as a preferred mode of transportation.

There are several advantages to motorcycles. With some models, motorcycles offer a ride with good fuel economy. Cycles take up less space than cars, and they can be easier to park and main-tain in an urban setting.

NHTSA statistics indicate that motorcycle fatalities make up around 5 percent of all traffi c fatalities. Eighty percent of mo-torcycle accidents result in injury or death, compared to the roughly 20 percent of other vehicles. That’s due to the minimal protec-tion the vehicle provides. This further emphasizes the necessity to properly and safely operate a motorcycle to avoid accidents in the fi rst place.

Riding safely fi rst involves pur-chasing a bike that is the right size and power for the rider. Larger bikes can be heavy and riders who are small in stature may not be able to maneuver or lift the motorcycle should it fall over. Also, riders should choose bikes that fi t their lifestyles. For instance, a trail bike will not be safe on a highway.

It is a good idea to enroll in a motorcycle safety course if this is a rider’s fi rst experience with a bike. This course will give in-valuable tips regarding maneu-vering, learning about operating the cycle, defensive driving tech-

niques and other tips specifi c to motorcycles. For example, inter-sections are one place on a road-way where many accidents take place. Bike riders should try to enter an intersection with a larger vehicle on the right of the motor-cycle or at least in the left-most lane to provide a space cushion from oncoming traffi c.

Of course, protective clothing and equipment are essential to minimize injuries if an accident should occur. Helmets, goggles, boots, long pants, jackets, and the like should be worn at all times. Injuries can often be prevented with protective gear, but many riders still don’t embrace such gear.

Another important safety tip is to recognize that traveling with another passenger is much more diffi cult to do than riding alone. A passenger can throw off the bal-ance of the bike and add weight, two factors that may be different from what the rider is used to. Be-fore taking another passenger out for a spin, riders should be ex-tremely experienced in handling the bike and profi cient in all con-trols and safety maneuvers.

Here are some other safety tips motorcycle riders can heed.

* Treat other motorists with cour-tesy.

* Do not tailgate.

* Do not cut through the middle of lanes or pass cars on the right while traffi c is stopped.

* Be especially alert at intersec-tions.

* Use signals whenever appropri-ate.

* Avoid driving during inclement weather.

* Assume the motorcycle is in-

visible to other drivers; position yourself to be seen.

* Avoid sudden braking or turn-ing.

* Maintain a safe distance be-tween vehicles.

* Use headlights during nighttime and daytime hours.

* Watch the road surface to an-ticipate potential hazards.

Following safe driving methods helps prevent motorcycle-related accidents, injuries and death.
