Bring more light into a home A home without ample lighting can be uncomfortable. Dark rooms can exacerbate feelings of depression and make a home feel less inviting to guests. However, bringing in more outside light or supplementing with artifical light can quickly transform the atmosphere of a space. Daylight hours begin to shrink in the northern hemisphere starting as early as September. When daylight savings time is in full force, it can get dark as early as 4:30 in the afternoon. While this premature darkness may be ideal for animals who are hibernating for the season, for humans who remain active throughout the year, increasing the amount of light that is present in a home is a goal each winter. There are different strategies to let in more light when the sun sets. *When purchasing a new home, be conscious of window placement and also the direction in which a home faces. Apartments and homes that face north will be

dark most of the day. Rather, those that face south will have ample sunlight. In addition, look at how many trees are on the property. Even a home that faces south can have compromised sunlight if it is hampered by many trees. *Open curtains and blinds all the way throughout the home during the winter months. Not only will this let in more light, but it also may warm the home from the sun, cutting down on heating costs. *When planning a home renovation project, consider adding a window on a wall where there currently is none or think about the inclusion of skylights to let in more light from above. Innovations in skylight technology enable small ones to be placed in rooms and connected through interior tubes that reflect the light. French doors also can bring in a lot of light. Separate a dark room from a bright room with a set of French doors to spread even more light throughout the home. *Paint walls with lighter colors that reflect light more

effectively. Dark-colored floors and walls tend to absorb light, enhancing a cave-like atmosphere. *Stagger lights at varying heights to cast equal light throughout rooms. Task lighting, overhead lighting and decorative ambient lighting can combine to achieve a warm, inviting atmosphere. *Use solar lights outdoors to add extra illumination outside, which can make your home more welcoming when arriving home at night. *Clear rooms of clutter as such items can interrupt the flow of light. *If you find that the light in your home is still lacking and you can benefit from a burst of extra light therapy, consider the purchase of a therapy lamp that simulates sunlight. Set the timer and have it face you in the morning or afternoon. There also are alarm clocks that wake you with the simulation of a rising sun.

To banish winter doldrums, sometimes the key is to simply let more light into a home.

No other flooring option delivers the splendour, warmth and value of natural wood. Today there are countless colours available to choose from as well as different species, each with their unique characteristics. No matter the decor style of your home -- modern, contemporary, zen, rustic or urban -- today’s hardwood flooring manufacturers have something for every style and taste. Here are the four key steps to consider, to create a unique centerpiece hardwood floor that’s custom tailored for any interior space from country home to urban loft. 1. Color scheme Are you looking for something light or dark? Understated or with bold character? Choose the color that best matches your decor from a wide variety of colors available in each species. For uniform hue and a clean look, opt for either “Select & Better” or “Premium” grades. If you enjoy more pronounced color variation and wood with more character, you may prefer “Antique” or “Classic” grades. 2. Species From Red Oak, Hard Maple, Yellow Birch, White

Ash, White Oak or Brazilian Cherry, each wood species has its own personality and distinct look (grades and width) that comes across in its maturity, hardness, and durability. 3. Gloss Depending on the species, you can choose between a matte, semi-gloss and satin finish. A matte, semi-gloss finish tends to project a more formal atmosphere; whereas the natural look of a satin finish will feel more casual and better disguise wear and tear. 4. Widths and textures Wider planks, which are becoming increasingly popular, tend to create a more casual rustic appearance, while narrow planks are more formal. Manufacturers are now offering 61/2” and even 71/4” boards in certain species. This is part of the emerging trend of the last few years where consumers are seeking more rustic looks for their hardwood flooring choices. Along with wider boards, another way this is achieved is with the latest use of different textures to give wood either a distressed look of barn wood, prominent knots or the natural lines of boards planed the old fashioned way.

NOWOPEN!

The Ring Around Wild Rose Garden Tour will be held on Saturday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Six gardens in the Wild Rose area will be featured this year. The sites feature a variety of gardening styles and designs, and are sure to provide inspiration to those attending the tour.

Springwater Covered Bridge Park

Unlike most ‘garden walk’ sites, this garden is owned by Springwater Township. An authentic covered bridge, built by township volunteers was completed and dedicated on June 2, 1997. Kermit & Shirley Jorgenson who lived on the adjacent property decided to provide a “private park dedicated to the public” on part of their property. They worked many years creating a beautiful and durable landscape with shrubs, flowers, path-ways, gazebo, picnic tables and wa te r f a l l / pond area.

Roger and Carol Rosin

Roger and Carol Rosin have been farming their garden for about 20 years saying it’s “wild and nothing is in order”. However, you will find surprises at every turn – rock islands with overflowing native plants, grasses and perennials; a gazebo and round corn cribs covered by sprawling vines. All are full of flights of fancy, whether patio furniture on which to relax amid various hanging pieces of “art” or filled with a mix of bird and squirrel feeders. Another corn crib covered in grapevine secretly hides a hammock, metal works or cement pieces of garden art. Finding antiques and cleverly stacked rocks, scattered through the gardens, brings a surprise followed by a smile.

Butch and Helen Cox Moving onto this former

Christmas tree farm in 1997, Butch and Helen Cox started by planting the site to grass and gardens. Having lived in Florida previously, they were anxious to grow plants they couldn’t grow there and started with lilac trees, peonies and bulbs. Over the years, they added several islands of perennials, shrubs, herbs and vegetables, making changes as they found necessary, including an active compost bin to regularly amend their soil.

Rachelle Towne Rachelle’s ten-year-old garden surrounds her tiny home on a very narrow lot. This limited space is packed with plants creating a beautiful, private garden which provides food and space for this gardener’s plant collection. Because Rachelle’s garden is surrounded on three sides by street, alleys and views

of neighboring yards, many shrubs and fruit trees help create privacy. Included in this garden are a potager (kitchen garden) of herbs, salad greens and vegetables; and many edible fruit trees and berries.

Larry and Nancy (Jirik) Martin

Nancy has gardened at this site for 15 years. Her English garden is filled with annuals, perennials, over 50 hostas and a variety of prairie plants. This charming lakeside home is landscaped to take advantage of the beautiful lake views. Terraced gardens brimming with perennials and annuals

cascade to the shore.

Darrel and Marilyn Apps After living out of state for nearly 40 years, late in 2005 Marilyn and Darrel Apps purchased a “fixer up” Queen Anne style house, built in 1900 by Robert K. Jones, the proprietor of the Wild Rose Hardware Store. The house design includes many windows to view the gardens. The front yard features the original buggy stepping stones, a semi-circle walk around them and a large entrance planting of dogwoods, hydrangeas, yellow sumac, bulbs and various perennials for all growing seasons. A solid fence, constructed to tie the new garage, barn and home together provides privacy, an enclosure for the family dog and keeps the gardens rabbit and deer free. Another marvelous area is a small parterre (a pattern

of boxwood h e d g e s filled with c o m p a n i o n p l a n t s ) , p r o v i d i n g vistas from the upstairs g u e s t b e d r o o m and the d o w n s t a i r s m a s t e r bedroom. The surrounding fence has trellises with C l e m a t i s

‘Wisley’. Tickets for Ring Around Wild Rose Garden Tour will be available from Shar-a-Gardeners members; also in Wautoma at the Argus, Floral Expressions, Pioneer Floral, Candle Freak Gallery, and the Farm Market. In Plainfield, they will be available at Russell’s Farm Market and in Wild Rose at Roseville and at Russell’s Farm Market. At both events, information will be available regarding the UWEX-Master Gardeners program and the local Waushara County group, Shar-a-Gardeners.

Garage organization 101 Garages are coveted by homeowners across the country, offering a space to park a car and protect it from the elements. But many people do not park a car in their garage, only to find the garage become a home to clutter. Garages tend to become the official catch-all of a home. When an item cannot be crammed into a hiding space elsewhere, it often ends up dumped into the garage, where it joins the long list of other abandoned items. It can be easy to let garages become a wasteland because everything put inside a garage is behind a closed door. That mess can quickly build up, and reclaiming your garage requires energy, time, organization, and a plan.

Organizing a garage will take some time. An entire weekend or two consecutive days may be necessary depending on the level of disarray. Taking everything out of the garage and going through the sorting process may take the most time. When

sorting, separate any broken items, which can immediately be put at the curb for trash pick-up. Examine things that you have not used in some time. If you haven’t missed it, there’s a good chance that you can discard the item or donate it. Create separate piles for donations and trash. After completing the sorting process, look at the garage as a blank space and measure out the room that you have. This will provide an empty canvas as a starting off point. To maximize the amount of space you have as a work area or a place to park your car, invest in as many tools as possible to utilize vertical space. Shelving, hooks and cabinetry will take things off of the floor, while storage units with doors can hide items that lack aesthetic appeal. Rolling tool caddies and cabinets can keep all tools neat and in organized drawers so you’re never hunting and pecking for a tool again. A cabinet that has a lock and key can be utilized for dangerous chemicals that need to be kept

out of the hands of children and away from pets. Think about how the garage will appear from the curb when the door is raised and create a design that will be functional and neat. Take the opportunity while the garage is empty to give walls and floors a fresh coat of paint and improve the lighting in the garage. A brighter garage makes for a better work station.

For those who can use a little extra help, there are professional garage organization companies that can come in and install custom cabinetry and work surfaces. This is an option if you desire a high-end garage. When putting items back into the garage, label where everything is stored until you become accustomed to the new organization. This way you’ll be able to find everything easily. Organizing a garage can be tedious, but the reward is ultimately worth the effort.

Increase storage possibilities What homeowner has not lamented that they have many more belongings than they have storage space? In some homes, particularly in older homes, closet space and other areas to store items may be lacking. Apartment dwellers often find they’re lacking in storage space as well. But savvy homeowners can find both permanent and temporary solutions to their home storage problems.

One of the easiest ways to create storage space is to simply remove some belongings from the residence. Go through closets around the house and pick through the attic and/or garage to see if there are any items that can be discarded or donated. Items that are broken can be discarded, while those things that still have utility can be donated or sold. The next step is to maximize the space of your existing

closets. Many closets are equipped with just a shelf and a clothing rack, greatly limiting the storage potential. Investing in a closet organization system is one way to transform a poorly utilized space. These systems can be purchased, often inexpensively, from a home improvement center. Compiled of modular racks and shelving, the positioning can be customized depending on the size of the closet. Oftentimes, the addition of shelving or another rack for hanging clothes can solve some storage issues. These closet systems also are ideal for renters because they can be installed with minimal damage and be removed when a lease expires.

Homeowners may have to think vertically to solve storage solutions. Wall space may be abundant in a home where closets are not. Therefore,

shelving and cabinets can be places to keep items neatly off the floor. A series of shelves can be installed next to a washing machine to keep laundry supplies organized. In children’s rooms, build bookcases the height of the room so children can store frequently used reading material and toys on the lower levels, and adults can put collectibles and mementos near the top. Hang hooks to hold hats and robes. Whenever possible, look to store items on the walls where they will keep clutter off the floor. Storage can even be created in the bathroom, where the space over the toilet can be used to hang a cabinet to store hand towels and other toiletries if the space under the sink has already been claimed. Even when there is a small amount of storage space, individuals can find clever ways to neatly store items.

Using bold paint colors Paint is one of the least expensive and most versatile means to changing the look of a room. According to the experts from “This Old House,” 60 percent of the colors of a home that visitors perceive come from the paint on the walls. Choosing a color scheme can be challenging, which is why so many people stick with neutrals like beige and white. For those who are ready to add a spark of color, there are a few guidelines to consider. Color theory is a science and there are rules of using color that are taught as early as a child’s first foray into art class. We know there are primary, secondary and complementary colors on the color wheel. Even novice home decorators can do well with color if they use the color wheel as their guideline. According to HGTV, color should flow throughout a house. Every room need not be painted the same color. However, colors should be complementary enough that they flow into one another.

Don’t paint one room in child’s basic primary colors, while painting other rooms in jewel tones and pastels. Stick with one theme and carry it through the house. Once you have decided to use a bold color, first find your color inspiration. Color combinations that appear in nature are more readily accepted by people, so look for an item in nature, such as a seashell or a flowering plant that you can base your color choices on. Others pull inspiration from a particular design item. For instance, maybe an area rug strikes your fancy. Use colors that appear in the rug in the room. Keep in mind that using bold color doesn’t mean you have to paint every wall from ceiling to floor in that color. Rather, if you’re just starting out with bold colors, select one wall to serve as an accent wall. If you will be incorporating complementary colors into the room, use the paint color swatch as your guide. Most paint manufacturers use three

or four different shades on one sample card. When selecting a complementary shade, be sure to pick from the same tone on the card. That means if you’re choosing the darkest of color #1 from a card, you’ll want to choose the darkest from color #2. Another idea is to leave walls neutral and use bold color on design accents. For example, designers at marthastewart.com recommend painting the inside of niches, shelves or cabinets with glass doors in bright tones and the outside white to create an eye-catching space without going overboard. Put a bold color on moulding or use an appliance or a fixture in a bright color as your splash of boldness. Remember to have balance. If you will be painting an entire room in a bold color, think about having the other decor items in neutral colors. Sofas and rugs should be neutral colors, or consider toning down a vibrant color with the use of white molding or baseboards.

Creating a beautiful and bountiful garden is a popular pastime for people all across the country. It is important to keep in mind that aesthetically appealing plants may be appetizing to area wildlife, including deer. Those who do not want their gardens to turn into all-you-can-eat buffets for deer, rabbits and other wild animals can take a more proactive approach to gardening. Deer are opportunists who will no doubt see your garden as a salad bar ripe with all of their favorite foods. As housing developments continue to encroach on the natural habitats of deer and other animals, these animals are becoming more visible. Deer may not be able to forage for food effectively in their smaller, natural surroundings, or they may become accustomed to the “easy pickings” they find in neighborhood yards. Either way, you may encounter a deer in or around your area.

Fence It Fences are one way to deter deer from entering a yard and dining on your garden. Keep in mind that deer can jump fences that are quite tall, but they have to be especially motivated to jump an eight-foot-tall fence. Still, they tend to be weary about scaling a fence when they cannot see what is on the other side. Therefore, if you are fencing out deer, choose a fence that camouflages the garden well and completely encloses the area to be protected. If you do not want the fence to be solid, consider putting stakes or thorny plants within the garden so that the deer will hesitate to jump into the garden.

Scare Them Deer are naturally skittish around people, but over time they can become quite complacent around human beings. Once a deer decides that something will not present a threat, the deer can adapt to its presence. Motion-activated devices may not work, nor the presence of pets. Predator urine is typically an effective way at keeping deer at bay. Bottled coyote urine can be quite effective, although human urine may work as

well. Reapplying the product weekly around the plants is a good idea.

Repel the Deer There are many organic or chemically-based products on the market that deer may find offensive to the taste or smell. Hot pepper, sulfur and eggs or even the use of soapy water have been successful in certain instances. The use of blood meal or even human hair around the garden may repel the deer and keep them on a different foraging path. However, remember that any deer that is very hungry may ignore unpleasant tastes or smells for a quick bite.

Change Plants If other food sources are available, there are some species of plants and trees that deer will avoid. Filling your garden with these plants can help you maintain a beautiful, albeit untasty, environment for deer. When planting annuals, select among: * Alyssum * Begonias * Calendula * Celosia * Dianthus * Foxglove * Geraniums * Parsley * Poppy * Snapdragons In terms of perennials, plant these items once, and deer could stay away: * Ageratum * Anemone * Astilbe * Bearded iris * Catmint * Honeysuckle * Lantana * Monkshood * Rock rose * Rosemary * Soapwort * Wisteria Plant these herbs alongside flowers for even more protection: * Chives * Eucalyptus * Garlic * Mint * Thyme * Wintergreen Gardeners who use a combination of methods to keep deer out of their yards and gardens may have a higher success rate at deterring these animals.

Local nursery receives national award

Neil Diboll, President of Prairie Nursery in Westfield, Wisconsin, has been chosen to receive a 2013 Great American Gardeners Award from the American Horticultural Society (AHS). Through its national awards programs, AHS celebrates outstanding achievements, encourages excellence, and inspires innovation in the art and science of horticulture. The Paul Ecke Jr. Commercial Award is awarded to an individual or company whose commitment to the highest standards of excellence in the field of commercial horticulture contributes to the betterment of gardening practices everywhere. Named for Paul Ecke Jr. (1925-2002), innovator, facilitator, businessman, and formerly known as the Commercial Award, it was first awarded in 1971.

Neil Diboll is an internationally recognized pioneer in the use of North American prairie plants in modern landscapes. Diboll took over the half-acre nursery in 1982 and steadily expanded it to the current 200 acres that serves as a retail, online store and mail-order source for a wide selection of prairie natives. Thanks in large part to his efforts over the last few decades, native plants have gone from being viewed as weeds to becoming integral components of gardens, meadows, wildlife habitat, and rain gardens. Diboll is also a sought-after consultant and speaker, lecturing worldwide on topics such as establishing prairie meadows, designing

with native plants, and the socio-economic benefits of converting high-maintenance, resource-intensive landscapes into self-sustaining ecological sanctuaries. Over the years Prairie Nursery’s online and mail order catalogs have become

an invaluable resource for gardeners nationwide who share enthusiasm for the unique beauty and ecological benefits of native plants. Native plants are exalted for their support to birds & butterflies. They are also used to protect the soil in extreme conditions, help

with water conservation in urban and rural settings, and eliminate the need for fertilizer and pesticides.

The Prairie Nursery retail outlet is located in Westfield, at W7262 Dover Ct., and is open for the season from

Friday, April 12 through Oct. 4. Store hours are listed on the Prairie Nursery website. The store location does not display correctly on GPS devices and is best located by referring to a map, also available on the website: www.prairienursery.com.

Did you know? Many times it is to a homeowner’s advantage to open the drapes and let sunlight shine in. Still, for shift workers, parents of young children who need to nap or just those who have south- or west-facing windows that make rooms overly warm, darkening the room is necessary at certain times of the day. The easiest and most effective way to do so is to purchase blackout curtains. Depending on the brand and quality of the curtains, some of them may block out sunlight entirely while providing additional benefits. While preventing sunlight from entering a room, blackout curtains, which are thicker than traditional curtains, may also be effective at insulating rooms against drafty windows and providing noise reduction.

Eco-conscious ways to tend to your lawn Many homeowners are constantly on the lookout for ways to make their homes more environmentally friendly. Such a pursuit is both noble because it helps the environment and practical because it often saves money. While there are many eco-friendly improvements homeowners make inside their homes, it’s important to note that there are several ways for men and women to be more environmentally conscious outside of their homes as well. Lawn care can be done in a way that’s conscious of the environment, and the results can be just as appealing as if the lawn were tended to without regard for the planet. The following are just a few of the many ways homeowners can adopt more eco-friendly practices when tending to their lawns. * Be conscientious when watering. Overwatering a lawn is pretty common, especially during the dog days of summer, when homeowners try to overcompensate for hot days with excessive watering. The growth of moss on sidewalks or the driveway is a telltale sign that you’re watering too much, as is a standing pool of water on the grass. Homeowners who find it difficult to determine

when their lawns have gotten enough water can purchase an intelligent irrigation control system that adapts your watering to a lawn’s needs as well as the weather. *Turn back the clock on your tools. Before gas mowers became the standard, man-powered push mowers were used to cut the grass. Such mowers still exist, and they require no fuel, making them a more eco-friendly option than their gas-powered counterparts. Along those same lines, leaf blowers are a far less friendly way to rake leaves in the fall or clean the yard after a long winter. While there’s no denying their effectiveness, leaf blowers need gas to operate, while a rake just requires some elbow grease and a little extra time out in the yard. *Stay local. If you need to plant new grass or you’re beginning a garden, then stick with local plants, flowers and grasses rather than more exotic options that are not native to your area. Plants, flowers and grasses that aren’t native to your region will require more maintenance and often more watering. That added maintenance might prove to be a headache, and that excessive watering will not be

beneficial to the environment. Native plants, flowers and grasses have already adapted to your climate, and they can be provide just as much aesthetic appeal as more exotic alternatives. *Avoid pesticides whenever possible. Many homeowners treat their lawns with pesticides, which can make a lawn look beautiful. But that beauty typically comes at a steep price, impacting local wildlife and perhaps even the local water supply. When pesticides are applied to a lawn, the chemicals within may run off into your local water supply. If you can’t avoid pesticides entirely, then do your best to minimize how often you use them. *Don’t let rain water go to waste. Rain barrels are a great way to make good use of rain. Rain barrels can be placed beneath a gutter’s downspout, where they will collect water that can be reused throughout your property to water the lawn and garden. Rain barrels can be relatively expensive, but over time they will pay for themselves as you save money on your water bill. Lawn care can be conducted in a way that benefits the environment as well as your bottom line.

The benefits of pruning trees and shrubs Pruning trees and shrubs is necessary to ensure they maintain their health and vigor. Trees and shrubs should be inspected annually to determine if they need to be pruned. Mature trees typically do not need to be pruned as frequently as young trees, which need pruning to establish branch structure. Trees and shrubs that go years without pruning can become overgrown and weak. In addition to promoting tree and shrub health, pruning pays a host of other dividends. *Pruning removes dead or diseased branches. Pruning helps a tree or shrub maintain its shape and vigor by removing broken, dead or diseased branches that can be unsightly and make it more difficult for the tree or shrub to stay healthy. When broken, dead or diseased branches are removed, trees or shrubs look healthier and add aesthetic appeal to a property. *Pruning trees and shrubs promotes growth of other plants. Trees and shrubs that go years without being pruned become overgrown, making it difficult for plants underneath or adjacent to them to grow in healthy. For example, grass beneath an overgrown tree might not get adequate sunlight, which it needs to establish strong roots so it can grow in lush and healthy. Pruning allows plants beneath the tree and shrub and even those next to the tree and shrub to grow in nicely.

*Pruning can sometimes bring plants back to life. Shrubs that have gone years without being pruned can sometimes still be salvaged. In some instances, pruning such shrubs can restore natural and healthy growth. *Pruning reduces risk of accidents. Overgrown trees can interfere with power lines, increasing the risk of accidents and power outages. In addition, overgrown trees tend to have larger, weaker limbs, which can prove hazardous and cause property damage during storms. Pruning overgrown trees reduces the risk of such accidents. *Pruning can save money. Over time, overgrown trees might require professional assistance in order to be

removed or pruned from a property. Homeowners who prune their trees as needed can save themselves the cost of a potentially pricey tree service. *Pruning adds curb appeal. A property littered with overgrown trees and shrubs hurts a home’s curb appeal, giving prospective buyers the

impression that homeowners might have been careless with regard to maintaining the whole house and not just the lawn. But trees and shrubs that are pruned and well-maintained can add to a home’s curb appeal, something that goes a long way toward impressing prospective buyers.
