From the Principal’s Desk ...

Reporng

Semester One reports will be mailed to families on the

final day of this term. Remember that a review of our

reporng procedures endorsed by our P & C in 2017 has

led to significant changes. This will minimise lengthy

comments and engage parents in Parent/Teacher

Interviews with an opportunity to discuss student

results.

All reports will include rangs for student achievement,

behaviour and effort and comments for English and

Math subjects, and overall behaviour and effort.

Dependant on the year level, addional comments for

some subject areas may be included.

I encourage all parents to parcipate in Parent Teacher

Interviews when offered in Term 3.

PBL Focus this week:

“ I use calming strategies when I am upset.”

It is important to

recognise when we are

upset and idenfy

strategies to use to calm

ourselves down.

This is pernent at this

point in the term as we

head into the final weeks

before holidays, as

students become less

resilient and less tolerant

of others.

P & C Meeng: Thursday 14 June, 5.30pm

At tomorrow night’s P & C Meeng, I will be presenng

our school’s Bullying Policy for endorsement a:er

undergoing review by staff and the PBL Team as well as

the 2017 School Annual Report which will be uploaded

to our website by the end of this week.

Have a great week,

Rowie Price

Principal

Welcome to Week 9!

It is hard to believe that we are almost to the end of

Week 9. Students and staff connue to focus on ‘Every

Student Succeeding’ through constant revision of

learning goals and celebrang when gains are made

towards these. With only a li?le over two weeks remaining

for the term, it is important that students connue to do

their best to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Highlights of Week 8:

♦ Students of the Week being recognised for their

ability to work effecvely as a member of a team as

well as connuing to focus on their learning.

♦ Golden Broom Award winners, Years 9 & 10 - they

have taken responsibility for the G block area and

have made some changes to their learning space for

the be?er. Well done!

♦ Students represenng our school and Miles and

District at the South West Cross Country Trials.

♦ Students being recognised for their Reading and

Spelling milestones as part of our connued focus on

literacy. It is great to see students improving in their

reading levels.

♦ Students compleng assessment tasks to the best of

their ability—this will connue this week.

A?endance

Congratulaons to our Prep and Year 9/10 students for their

100% a?endance last week, followed closely by the Year 2s.

A friendly reminder that if your child is away to contact

administraon with an explanaon for the absence,

preferably before or on the day of the absence.

This term has seen Year 5/6 listen to, read and view a variety of news reports from television, radio and the internet. Students have identified and analysed bias in media reports. They evaluated the effectiveness of language devices that can influence an audience. They have created a written response to a news report for their assessment.

The 5/6 students have also been creating a number of documentary style films to tell a person’s story. Students have had to create an interview-based documentary that features someone from our school community such as a parent, teacher, student, librarian, groundsman or principal.

The documentary focuses on how the person contributes their time or skills to the school community (their role in the school), and informs us more about who they are or what they do outside of school.

Students worked in small groups (two or three students) to plan and design the documentary that communicates the subject’s point of view about the school community.

These short documentary films will be on view at the end of term.

INCLUSIVE INSIGHTS

Social Skills Everyday social interactions are complex and multi-layered. Everyone makes social gaffes but on a whole we are quick to recognise our errors and act to repair them. People with Autism Spectrum Disorder have great difficulty understanding non-verbal communication, such as facial expression, body language and tone of voice. Their literal interpretation of the world means that they frequently misunderstand the actual words.

This is why our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) lessons each week are so important for our students with additional needs. It gives us the opportunity to think about different social situations and work towards understanding what might be going on in each person’s mind and help students to come to an understanding of each other. We often use visual aides to help remind student to stop and think before they decide on a course of action.

Many students with ASD have difficulty with voice control. Some may talk very loudly in inappropriate places, while other students may use a soft voice. Teachers often talk to students about using inside and outside voices to remind students to use the appropriate voice for the situation or use visual cues. Using role playing is another powerful way to help students.

Parents can also help their children at home, to think about the volume and tone of voice they use. When parents and teachers work together by giving consistent messages we can have the greatest impact on our children.

Kind Regards

Ms Zackrisen

The Year 9/10 students in Informaon & Communicaon Technology lessons (ICT) have been working on a

project using a combinaon of engineering and coding skills. They had to build a robot using the Lego kits

and then program them to travel a pathway that simulated a tractor that was spraying for pests in a

paddock. There have been many trials and reprogramming and it has been a joy to see the engagement

and persistence of some students. It has been pleasing to see the way students have been helping each

other out when things don’t go as planned. Ms Zackrisen
