I am writing this the night before the Oscars, aka the 86th Academy Awards. I have always loved movies,

especially the ones that leave you feeling like you’ve just

gotten off an emotional roller coaster as you walk out of

the theater. I want to feel wrung out, strung out, shaky,

overwhelmed, and consumed. This year was full of films

that did that to me: August: Osage County (have there ever

been more real characters?), Dallas Buyers Club (left me

mourning my best friends I lost to HIV), Nebraska (beautiful

black and white cinematography), Blue is the Warmest

Color (achingly felt lost love), Blue Jasmine and Philomena

(Cate and Judy!), 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle

(Chiwetel Ejiofor and Christian Bale!). Why cinematic as a

theme for a fashion zine? Film and fashion have forever

been linked. I’ve been inspired by numerous films and

directors in editorials I’ve styled over the years.

My two favorites directors are Terrence Malick and Sofia

Coppola. Malick’s Days of Heaven and Badlands and

Coppola’s Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation are inspiring

in both cinematography and wardrobe. Stanley Kubrick is

another genius whose vision continues to inspire fashion and

moviemakers. Sadly, we lost one of the world’s best actors,

Phillip Seymour Hoffman, whose performance in Capote

I’ve seen at least 30 times. Why do I watch movies over and

over? Watching a favorite movie is like shrugging your best

old leather jacket on or zipping up a beat up pair of beloved

boots; ultimately comforting and familiar.

So grab a bag of popcorn and flip through this issue of The

Wallflower. I hope you enjoy our artists cinematic interpretations

as much as I did. I know I’ll look at them again and again.
