Healthy fats are important. Fats are not only an important source of energy for our bodies; some fatty acids (certain compounds of the fats) – the (poly-) unsaturated fats – are even essential elements of good nutrition. Two poly-unsaturated fatty acids (also known as Omega-3- and Omega-6 fatty acids) belong to the essential nutrients, meaning that the human organism needs them to live. Saturated and unsaturated fats The compounds of fat can be differentiated between saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids, the latter can be mono- or poly-unsaturated fatty acids. What all fats have in common is that they supply significant energy that the body needs to be able to “function.” Fatty acids are chain-like bonds of various lengths. They consist of hydrocarbon atom chains of various lengths and various degrees of saturation. These are distinguished by whether there are double bonds between the hydrocarbon chains, and if so, where they are and how many of them there are. If double bonds are present we speak of unsaturated fatty acids, if not, we call them saturated fatty acids. The essential poly-unsaturated fatty ac-ids have more than one double bond in the hydrocarbon chain. De-pending upon where the first double bond is positioned we speak of Omega-6 fatty acids (the first double bond sits at the 6th position) or Omega-3 fatty acids (the first double bond at the 3rd position). Monounsaturated fatty acids (Omega-7- or Omega-9 fatty acids) have only one double bond. The double bonds normally have a cis configuration (meaning that both carbon atoms at the double bond are on the same side of the fatty acid chain.). Saturated fats that do not have double bonds are primarily of animal origin and can be found in meat- and milk products, but also in fried meals, candy and ready-made meals.

Cis and trans configuration

In addition to unsaturated fatty acids with double bonds in the cis configuration, there are the trans configurated double bonds, referred to as trans fatty acids. Contrary to the cis configuration, the carbon atoms are on the opposite side of the fatty acid chain. This arrangement stabilizes the fatty acid chain with the result that the human organism can hardly break them down. The result may be an unhealthy effect for the human organism. In addition, heat destroys chemical bonds and thereby also the “healthy” double bond of the atoms of the fatty acid chain (in the cis position). Heat, as occurs with the production of industrially manufactured foods, breaks these bonds (mono); unsaturated fatty acids become saturated fatty acids. Trans fatty acids result which can cause, among other things, micro-inflammation in the human body owing to the fact that they can only be broken down to a certain extent. Therefore, nutrition with a high share of saturated fats and trans fatty acids can promote chronic inflammatory processes in the body. Studies increasingly confirm the theory that many diseases of civilization can be traced back to this.1) What causes our other-wise stable “inflammation mechanism” to fall out of balance like this? In summary: a lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits. A healthy, non-inflammatory diet consists of plenty of fiber and antioxidants, and, in particular, healthy poly-unsaturated fats, such as those that can be found in fish, nuts, seeds and olives.

Optimal daily supply of fats As all fats consist of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids – with one type normally dominating, there can be no general judgment of

“fats”. It’s the right mixture that counts: with regard to the share of fats as a supply of energy and with regard to the shares of saturated and unsaturated fats within the daily intake of fat. The following “rules” apply as guiding values according to DGE - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung (German Nutrition Society): Fats should make up around one-third of the daily energy (=calo-ries) intake. This means, if we assume an average energy require-ment of 2,000 kcal per day for women and 2,500 kcal for men, then approx. 700 kcal to 800 kcal should be from fats. As one gram of fat supplies approx. 9 kcal then fat intake should be limited to around 75 grams for women and around 90 grams for men (1 Tbs. is about 10 grams).

Of this, a maximum of one-third of the fats should be from satu-rated fatty acids. As these fats are often “hidden” fats, meaning fats not immediately recognizable as such as they are “hidden” in e.g. cheese, processed meat, baked goods and sweet desserts, then care must be to taken to not exceed the recommended limit. Trans fats should be avoided to the greatest extent possible. As they can-not be completely avoided, however, they should be limited to less than one percent of the daily fat intake. Unsaturated fats should make up over two-thirds of the daily fat intake.

To be exact, at least one-third of the total fatty acids should be poly-unsaturated fatty acids which can be found, in particular, in hemp-, flaxseed-, olive-, peanut-, sesame-, rapeseed-, nut-, avo-cado- and sunflower oil. The rest should be mono-unsaturated fatty acids, as predominantly found in olive-, peanut-, nut-, thistle- and sunflower oil.

So that the body can correctly process the essential Omega-3 fatty acids (a-linolenic acids), the “right” relation of Omega-6- to Omega-3 fatty acids is very important. In this, it is frequently advised that a maximum of five times as many Omega-6 fatty acids than Omega-3 fatty acids should be consumed.

The VOM FASS Omega 3-6-9 Power-Mix Consuming the right fats and avoiding other certain fatty acids is “hard work”; it requires conscious consideration. As it also requires experience and sufficient knowledge of the composition of various oils, VOM FASS has developed an oil mixture that closely corresponds to the fatty acid recommendation issued by the DGE and which also tastes great. For this, we selected 7 fine oils and combined them accordingly:

Hemp OilHemp oil is used by people with neurodermatitis and allergies, sometimes with promising success2). Also for treating or preventing arteriosclerosis it is taken due to its composition.

Hazelnut OilHazelnut oil is rich in Vitamin E and is also taken for external applications, particularly for sensitive and dry skin.

Flax OilThe “Queen of the Omega-3 fatty acids” is nearly the only natural source with which the share of Omega-3 fatty acids (a-linolenic acid) exceeds the Omega-6 fatty acids. In extensive scientific stud-ies it was proven that flax oil can strengthen the immune system

and even influence the growth of tumors. Through a positive effect on cholesterol levels there is an indirect reduction of high blood pressure.3)

Cedar Nut OilCedar nut oil derived from the Siberian Cedar (origin: Siberian Taiga) is said to reduce feelings of hunger. In studies, a cholesterol-reducing effect was also found, as well as a positive effect on raised blood sugar levels. Cedar nut oil is said to alleviate or even completely cure symptoms tied to inflammation of the stomach lining due to gastritis.4)

Grapeseed OilGrapeseed oil, which is also described as a skin vitamin and as the „anti-aging oil of today“ 5) is rich in Vitamin E. It supplies Vitamin E, which has an antioxidative effect and can among other things bring ben-efits for the cardio-vascular system. It also possesses excellent skin-care qualities.

Rapeseed OilRapeseed oil is a source of Vitamins A and E. It is said to have a positive effect on the regulation of cholesterol levels.6)

Wheat Germ OilWheat germ oil has an extremely high natural Vitamin E content, with corresponding antioxidative effect, which can have repercussions on the free radicals in the body.

VOM FASS W-Omega 3-6-9 Power-MixThe VOM FASS W-Omega 3-6-9 Power Mix is a further develop-ment of the VOM FASS Omega 3-6-9 Power Mix and was specially adapted to nutritional recommendations for women. The basis is our VOM FASS Omega 3-6-9 Power Mix supplemented with natural gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) through the addition of high-quality borage oil.

Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA)

Gamma Linolenic Acid is a triple poly-unsaturated Omega-6 fatty acid (3 double bonds). It is synthesized in our organism from the essential Omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid or ingested directly from food. Important sources of gamma-linolenic acid are, among others, borage oil (approx. 20 to 25 % content) and evening primrose oil (approx. 8 to14 % content). Gamma-linolenic acid is important for the biological cell membranes of our nervous system; in particular, it harmonizes hormone production (not only of the gonads); it is also said to have a strengthening effect on the immune system and an anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory effect.7)

Page 11: The VOM FASS Omega 3-6-9 Power Mix

Gamma-Linolenic Acid is the substrate for dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). From this, the Series 1 prostaglandin also referred to as the “good tissue hormone” PGE1 is formed. Prostaglandins belong to the group of the eicosanoids. These are hormone-similar substances that can be only formed from poly-unsaturated fatty acids with a chain length of 20 C-atoms. Gamma-linolenic acid plays an important role in women’s nutrition (to be exact: through its further development to a “good tissue hormone”) through its regulation effects on hormone production and neuronal stimuli– relevant for preventing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) – GLA is said to alleviate some symptoms tied to PMS, such as headaches, cyclical breast discomforts, depression and irritability.

Borage Seed Oil Prized as a remedy for depression; used by homeopathic practition-ers to be taken internally for neurodermatitis, chronic skin diseases and stress-related illnesses (such as hormonal imbalance, rheu-matic symptoms, inflammatory processes and a weakened immune system).8)
