Introspection and Review on a Piece of World NewsWong Hoi Lam Lilian, 6A On Wednesday, 5th November, the presidential election 2008 of America finally came to an end. Barack Obama, who had been placed with a heavy responsibility, successfully became the new president of the USA rather than the candidate of Republican National Committee, John McCain. But why did they have different outcomes? In July 2008, Sarah Palin was invited to be the vice presidential candidate of the Republican National Committee at the very beginning of the campaign. A capable assistant will help the presidential candidate in order to influence the public votes. Initially, Sarah Palin’s performance was outstanding and was extraordinarily effective. However, her image to the electors became negative after electors found out that she lacked the basic knowledge of political affairs. More and more negative news about her appearance. Her charm was no longer useful to the campaign. John McCain was even blamed for selecting Sarah Palin as the vice presidential candidate. One of the main popular newspapers in the USA, The Washington Post, said the reason that the USA chose Barack Obama instead of McCain was that he had made an imprudent decision in naming the vice president who would have the responsibility of helping to rule the USA. The reputation of McCain was ruined by his own hands. On their policies, both Obama and McCain brought up the idea of ‘change ’. But only one change worked. George Bush, the present leader of the USA was in the same party as John McCain. Unfortunately, he was not viewed to be a good leader. His policies were not supported by the American population either. Richard Holbrooke even said that McCain was encumbered with Bush. We could easily see that some of McCain’s policies and ideas were the same as Bush. That was the main reason why his change didn’t work. Unlike McCain, Obama advocated withdrawing the soldiers from Iraq. This policy was welcomed by the electors as they believed peace would come to America as soon as the policy was carried out. However, John McCain was not a complete failure. His speech to congratulate Obama was the best ending for this campaign. His action to urge his own supporters to support the new president was appreciated by the whole world. It doesn’t cost anything to be polite. A winner may not necessarily be admired. However, a person with a good demeanour and the gracious defeat would always be appreciated. People do not live forever. However, their burning desires can last for years, centuries or even forever. Moreover, one false move may cause failure. Every action has consequences. In daily life, our actions always affect people around us. Therefore, it is necessary for us to pay attention to our words and deeds. As Obama said, every position is important to the USA. He would like to carefully consider appointing the United States Treasury Secretary. Before we make a decision, we ought to consider very carefully the consequences of our actions in order to avoid regretting them later on.

Lo Pok Ho Vincent, 6COn Saturday, I joined the school’s hiking trip to Luk Keng. When we arrived, we played a game about the food chain.

It was meaningful. Then we walked around the houses of the village. I also saw some birds’ nests. When we walked near a river, we found two male dragonflies fighting. They fought over a female dragonfly.

After that, we walked up a rocky mountain. One hour later, we arrived at the pavillion. We had lunch there. We enjoyed the views of Shenzhen.

Although I felt exhausted, I felt happy to learn something about nature and made some new friends.

Leung Yau Jun Eugene, 6ALuk Keng, a beautiful and wonderful place for hiking and a great place for us to learn more about nature. We walked past some old houses that were built in the 1960s. Most of the residents emigrated to Los Angeles or to

other European countries. After they got rich, they came back to Luk Keng and rebuilt the houses. They also engraved the year the building was completed on the corner of the buildings.

After walking for about 45 minutes, we saw a pond with lots of dragonflies flying around. It made for a marvellous picture. Then we saw a fort, which was built by some pirates in the Ching Dynasty. It was used to protect the village.

After that, we walked up a hill and there was a pavillion. We had lunch there and we could see Shenzhen clearly. The view was good. After lunch, we went back to school.

I was extremely tired but happy because I learnt many things about nature. I will start protecting the environment in order to let more people see this beautiful world.

Look! The slope is steep and we need to walk up the mountain.

Look at the beautiful views

of the countryside. We took the photo at a

pavillion.

We saw some dragonflies

around the river.

On 15th November, we went hiking on a sunny day. We went to Luk Keng. During the trip, we learnt how to prepare for the hike and the ways to protect the environment. Also, we learnt about the plants that have grown along the trail.

Pull-out Programme for linguistically gifted studentsThis year, an English Pull-out Programme, ‘Unlocking the Creative and Critical Minds of students’ has been developed to

explore and enhance students’ creativity , critical thinking skills through various reading and writing tasks that require investigation, problem solving and decision-making.

Participants are 12 Primary four students who are excused from the regular class for enrichment and acceleration activities in the visual arts room once per month.

Based on different tasks, students’ reading skills can be strengthened by introducing students to the following reading techniques—scanning, skimming, comparing and contrasting.

Students will predict what the subject matter is about, analyse and write poetry, and present their findings to the class.

The lessons will train up students’ high order thinking skills and problem solving skills. This will allow students to read and think critically and to identify the main ideas of a reading text.
