    Dear Colleagues,

In our profession, with few exceptions, massage therapists and bodyworkers are accomplished in more than one modality. Even before moving into the arena of continuing education and advanced certifi cations, the entry level practitioner has been taught to use more than one modality. Today one would be hard put to fi nd a school that taught only Swedish massage!

The modalities we learn to use were almost always developed as complete systems, and within each system, certain results can be rightfully expected when working with clients. The purists among us stay true to this principle and separate out modalities offered through the use of a menu of services presented to the client. Perhaps even discussing which modality would be the best choice for that day’s session, based on the client’s current needs. This is a popular and comfortable modus operandi in many private practices, in holistic health centers, and in spas. So this type of therapist might, for example, be skilled in cranial sacral, Swedish massage, Bowen, and deep tissue. Depending on what type of results were needed for that day and the preferences of the client, only one of these modalities would be used. Frequently, informed clients seek out practitioners of these modalities because they want to have a certain kind of bodywork experience. The effect of a session or a series of sessions is often profound.

Another type of therapist views all of the individual moves, strokes and pieces that comprise the modalities they have learned as fi lling a virtual tool box from which they construct a session for the client based on the needs and preferences of the client and even what they fi nd while working in the session. For the most part, this client happily gives over to the therapist the decision-making about what the therapist is going to do with the client during the session. Of course some modalities complement each other better than others, and in the interest of producing results for the client, this type of therapist becomes skilled over time at mixing and blending techniques, a little of this, a little of that-an alchemy that works magic for both the therapist and the client.

Knowing which approach more closely defi nes your style of working can help you to choose continuing education courses that will satisfy you. And as you see where you fi t into these philosophies, it can also hone your marketing and help you achieve success.

    With warm regard,

    Nancy Toner Weinberger, Publisher

The head, neck, shoulders and upper back—areas where tension is more likely to accumulate—are gently, firmly and rhythmically massaged until the pressure simply melts away. A new course series teaching hands-on work devoted to mastery of touch that reaches the mind, thus generating lasting changes in health and well-being.

There is one place, and one place only, that we experience our physical existence: our body. Every experience we have is filtered through our senses which dance upon the landscape of our body. Every thought, every belief, is based upon what we have experienced in that sacred space. As bodyworkers, touch and movement are the two tools we have to reach the body, and deeper, the mind, where we can help to create a milieu for healing to occur.

In this hands-on experiential class you will learn to: •Workeffectivelywithmovementatthetablethrough feeding proprioceptivity •Workintuitively-developlisteninghands • Letgoofprotocolandperceivetheneedsofthe tissue directly • Clearaway“shoulds,”findingauthenticacceptance and thus enhancing your client’s natural healing process

Instructor: Nancy Toner Weinberger, Bodyworker of more than 30 years, is an accomplished Trager® practitioner and teacher who trained directly with Dr. Milton Trager. She has a strong and varied background in mind-body health concepts.

    About the PERG

The Professional Education & Resource Guide Guide is an easy reference for continuing education opportunities for massage therapists and bodyworkers.

The PERG offers a variety of ways to select courses that meet your continuing education needs. • Browse the pages of advertisements to discover opportunities to enhance your skills and explore new and exciting theories and approaches. • Find courses in a location near you offered as part of a continuing education program designed to meet the needs of the professional community. • Look up the dates you are available to take classes in the index at the back of the guide and choose from among those listings.

The PERG is published twice per year; look for the Spring issue in January and the Fall issue in July.

The PERG is mailed free of charge to licensed massage therapists and bodyworkers, so keep your address up to date with your state massage board to ensure you receive each and every copy. There are six editions of the PERG:

North Carolina South Carolina Chesapeake (Maryland, Washington DC, and areas of Virginia surrounding Washington DC) The Virginias (all of Virginia except the Washington DC area, and West Virginia). Tennessee Georgia

For your convenience, you can download all the current editions of the Professional Education & Resource Guide in PDF format at www.ProEdResourceGuide.com (high-speed access needed).
