Whether you are a first-time Vinland family, or returning for another year, we’re glad you’re here and part of our community. We’re starting this year with 604 students in 27 K-5 class- rooms. This is about the same number of students as last year, but with one more teacher and classroom. This means our classes are a bit smaller overall than last year, thanks to additional state funding to address class size. Another positive change for this year is our new English and Language Arts (ELA) curricu- lum, ReadyGen. This district-wide adoption provides our teachers and students quality materials to support our high standards in reading and writing. You have likely already seen homework or teacher information about ReadyGen, but don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher if you have questions about how you can support literacy at home and school. Our staff has adopted a theme this year which we believe supports our work with students as well as with each other and our community. Learn Togeth- er, Grow for Life reflects our belief that it takes all of us working together to support our students. It also reminds us that we are all learners, and each day brings learning opportunities for adults as well as kids. One example of this is our approach to teaching behaviors. We don’t assume that all students know exactly what is expected of them each day, so we teach behaviors as well as aca- demics. We focus on the positive, acknowledging and reinforcing students mak- ing good choices. This approach is known as PBIS: Positive Behavior Interven- tion and Support. By having a system-wide approach, we keep the focus on learning together and developing skills for life. Mark next Friday on your calendars: our annual Fall Carnival will run from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. This is just one example of the many fun family events offered by our PTSA. I encourage you to join our PTSA, even if you cannot attend our monthly meetings or events. Your support of PTSA helps us provide programs and re- sources for the school that would not otherwise be possible. Take a look at our new playground equipment to see just one example. From the spider web to the mountain, our kids have been loving these new additions. Thank you, PTSA! Lastly, a warm welcome to our new teachers this year at Vinland: Mrs. Stener- son in preschool, Mrs. Ben-Judah (1 st ), Mrs. Williams (2 nd ), Mrs. Hendrick and Mrs. Park (3 rd ), Ms. Nelson (4 th ), Ms. Meyers (5th), and Mrs. Munson (5 th ). Wel- come, too, to two returning teachers in new roles: Mrs. LaPorte is our new PE teacher, and Mr. Heckard is our technology teacher. We have a great team here to support your kids, ready to Learn Together, Grow for Life!

Volunteer Forms Required
Adults and secondary students volunteering at any North Kitsap school need to have a current volunteer form on file. If you are planning to attend a field trip any time this year, help in the classroom, or work in the building at all, please have the form on file ahead of time. If you are a new applicant please allow two weeks for pro-
cessing. These are good for two years. The NKSD Volunteer Packet is available in the
school office, as well as on the Vinland website - click on for families’ tab and then click on
‘Volunteering.’

Late Arrivals and Early Pick Ups
Students who arrive after 9:20 AM are considered tardy and need to
stop by the office to check in.
If you need to pick your student up before the end of the school day, please stop by the office and sign your student out. We will then call them down to the office to meet
you. The North Kitsap School District does consider an early pick
up an afternoon tardy.
No students in the building before
9:10 please.
We are unable to provide supervision before that time.
Thank you for helping us keep our students safe!
End of the Day Messages
If you have a change of plans for your student regarding how they go home after school, please remember to send a note with your student in the morning. If for some reason you are unable to do this, please call the of-fice before 2:00 p.m. as messages received after that time are not guaranteed to get to your student before the end of the school day.

this year is Jungle Book.
Wanted: Box Tops!
One steadfast way for our teachers and staff to earn
FREE money is through the BOX TOPS for education
program! It’s so easy and there are hundreds of
products out there that have the little BOX TOP coupons on them. For every coupon clipped, we earn
10 cents. But the best part is that the teachers/staff
can spend this money any way they want - books, paper, art supplies, educational materials, rewards,
library needs - whatever they need!
We collect box tops year round and twice a year the
box tops are turned in - at the end of October and
the end of February! Please clip your coupons, save
your BOX TOPS and send them in with your student.
The first Box Top Collection deadline is October 21st.
If you have any questions, please contact Nicole Perry
LOTS of parent volunteers are needed for set up AND candy donations need-
ed!

Bullying Basics We are committed to do-ing what we can to make sure our students have a safe place to learn. We start by teaching, rein-
forcing, and celebrating our school-wide expectations of respect and kindness. We then directly teach students to recog-nize conflict and bullying behavior and we teach basic skills to deal with such situa-tions. Through classroom guidance les-sons and through daily review, real-time practice and constant reminders from the classroom teachers and support staff, our students learn and practice critical skills for dealing with conflict. They learn to RECOGNIZE the difference between bul-lying and other forms of interpersonal conflict. They learn to REFUSE to be bullied by using strategies to avoid or deal with problem situations. They learn to REPORT bullying if their attempts to help themselves are unsuccessful or if the situation is dangerous or threatening. Our hope is that our students will gain skills to react to interpersonal struggles assertively and with effective strategies and that they will feel safe seeking help when their strategies fail. Thanks to funding from PTSA, we are again able to reinforce our teaching points through an entertaining and edu-cational live theater performance by the Taproot Theater Touring Company in
November. Thank you PTSA!
Who is Kelso? Over the next several weeks Mrs. Nichols, special-
ist teacher, and Carolyn Mosiman will teach a se-
ries of lessons about problem solving using the
Kelso’s Choice Conflict Management curriculum
in all Kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms.
Your child will learn about “big” problems and
“small” problems. They will learn that “big” prob-
lems are actions or works that are dangerous,
threatening, or issues we try to solve but what we
try hasn’t worked. Students learn to ask adults for
help resolving “big” problems. They will also
learn that “small” problems can often be resolved
independently using one or more of Kelso’s strate-
gies.
Kelso is a frog friend who offers all kinds of ideas
t help kids resolve small problems. Kelso recom-
mends things like walking away, talking it out,
making a deal, ignoring it, etc. Your child will re-
ceive a copy of the Kelso Choice wheel below.
You can help by reviewing these “Kelso Choices”
with your child at home and encouraging them to
use these strategies t resolve small problems inde-
pendently.
Kudos! A HUGE thank you goes out to Lowell Sannes Photography for filming and editing

Happy Autumn!
Important information
coming your way!
1. Look for school picture enve-
lopes - Picture day is October
3rd!
2. Federal Impact Aid cards will
be going out in October. It’s very
important that these forms are
filled out and sent back with your
child. The school has to be
accountable for every card sent
out.
The Laporte Report in Physical Education
Welcome to a new school year! Mrs. LaPorte has enjoyed getting to know all
of you in her new role as PE teacher. September has been focused on learning
the routines of the gym, cooperation, and various locomotor movements. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are just starting to work on evaluating their intensity level and trying to get to level 4 out of 5 for
heart health. Primary students are working on moving safely in space and noticing when their heart starts beating faster and they are starting to breathe heave as signs of strengthening their
hearts and improving their lung efficien-cy. It looks like it’s going to be a great
year! Second Graders: Remember your
photo of being active outside of school is due September 28th.
Be sure your name and teacher’s name is on the back so I can return them at
