Welcome to The Village Emporium.TM

With more and more of us using mobile phones to access information on the move, we decided that it was time for The Village Emporium to embrace this wonderful new technology and introduce our very own App – EMPORIUM in your pocket. It’s designed to make it even easier for you to fi nd out where to go and who to call locally. What’s more there will be vouchers and special offers for you to check out as well as regular notifi cations of special events. All at the touch of a button, anytime, anywhere! Find out more on page 10. We’ve also improved our web site so you can browse the magazine online if you wish. Take a look at the new What’s On page for information on charity and community events in our area. Do visit www.villageemporium. But with all these high-tech developments we haven’t forgotten the printed magazine which we know you enjoy reading. So we’ve packed this issue with competitions and features as well as adverts from our fantastic local businesses.

Best wishes,

Karen, Alison & Clare

You won’t need to take the latest issue out with you,

just download the App from the Apple App Store or the iTunes and Androids Market. Just look for EMPORIUM in your pocket.

When you’re having coffee with a friend and can’t remember the name of that ultra-reliable gardener who you know is featured in The Village Emporium, just get out your phone. If you bump into a friend who is desperate to fi nd a therapist, EMPORIUM in your pocket is right at your fi ngertips. Each business is listed in a category on the App, so if you want to know where to go for lunch or dinner – the ‘Eating out’

category on the App will give you a choice. What’s more the advertisers can make it easy for you to fi nd them by linking to our map button.

You’ll also fi nd handy links to local events. No more trawling the web, it’s all on a simple App.

If you’d like to list your local club or association on the App for others to fi nd – it’s FREE! Just email us with the name and a 50 word description of the group, together with a contact name, number and email address/website as appropriate.

As each issue comes out you’ll fi nd the App updates with all the latest advertisers and events PLUS vouchers and special offers. It won’t be long before you wonder how you ever managed without it!

Soft Furnishings by Mickie comes to DunchurchMickie Fenwick-Wilson opened her fi rst Soft Furnishings studio on Clifton Road, Rugby

four years ago. She quickly gained an exceptional reputation in the area, making and

selling made-to-measure curtains, cushions, blinds, pelmets, loose covers and bed throws.

Soft Furnishings 2

And this year, after the former owners of a Dunchurch store decided to retire and sell their premises, Mickie saw the perfect opportunity to expand her business and launched Soft Furnishings 2 just after Easter.

“I’m delighted at how well it’s going,” Mickie explains. “I think that our success is down to the personal service we offer our customers. You can visit us at one of our studios, look through our many sample books and take them home for a couple of days. Or I can visit you so we can discuss your ideas, share inspiration and do any measuring required in the comfort of your own home. I am also incredibly lucky to have a team of skilled ladies who can create just about anything my customers want!”

Choose fabrics, blinds and

furniture in one place

The studios stock a wide variety of stunning, competitively-priced fabrics. You can also leaf through the studios’ stylish wall coverings or browse the made-to-measure blinds. Furniture, lamps and mirrors complete the treasure trove.

More than just a train station!

Personal service

Roger Cleaver, owner of Rogers Butchers

explains,

“I have lived here for more than forty years and know fi rst-hand what a wonderful village it is. It has a friendly, community feel and all the amenities, shops, businesses and clubs you could want. Having owned and run the shop for over eighteen years, I have a lot of regular, loyal customers, who enjoy free parking, a personal service and the knowledge that they can get exactly what they want; instead of having to buy pre-packed in the supermarkets, they can pick and choose from the counter.

“And of course, there are the practicalities of running a business in the village you live in – it cuts down on both expense and time!”

Simple smile and cheery word

Cathy Down, owner of Useful Things on the

High Street tells us her perspective:

“I love living and working in the village. It’s a great community with locals that greet you with a simple smile and cheery word and people doing so much good for others and for charities.

“There are loads of activities, clubs and societies to join or try and I bet you didn’t know there was a walk to Long Buckby Castle and a museum next to the community centre!

“The shopping experience in Long Buckby is full of choice, with the added bonus of free parking in the square. The local market held in the community centre on Thursdays from 9am until 11am is also well worth a visit.

“I’ve been in the shop for two years, stocking a wide selection of cooking, dining, bath & body, gardening, housekeeping and living items. I honestly believe that owning a shop in a village is completely different to a town location, because I am able to really get to know my customers.”

If you were to mention Long Buckby to anyone other than a resident, one of the fi rst things

mentioned would probably be the train station, which every morning and evening becomes packed

to the rafters with commuters making their way to Rugby, Coventry, Milton Keynes, London and

everywhere in-between. But if you just carry on a little way further up the road, you will discover

a thriving, bustling village that offers a wide range of amenities and services to both residents

and visitors alike.

But who are we to say? The Village Emporium spoke to the people that really know what the

village has to offer – Long Buckby business owners.

Strong community support

Deborah Coles of DCL Dog Training is a

qualifi ed dog trainer and canine behaviour

counsellor.

Deborah comments, “Long Buckby’s location amongst numerous smaller villages, together with the availability of facilities for my dog training classes, such as the St Lawrence’s Church Schoolrooms, enabled me to establish a thriving dog training and canine behaviour business. The strong community support from many local clients and businesses has further contributed to my fl ourishing business.”

A gentler, slower pace of life

Home Farm Stoves is owned by Geoff Seymour, a Long Buckby man born and bred.

“Long Buckby one of the few places you can still go down to the bank or shops and leave the door unlocked,” he explains. “In my former career, I had a three hour commute to work and back; now, with a business in the village, it is around two minutes. I can enjoy a gentler, slower pace of life. I have the time to speak to customers in depth to fully understand their needs and desires. This has for example allowed me to discover a need for quality ready-to-burn fi rewood in the local area, which I now sell to go with my stoves and cookers. This year, we have three exciting new lines of products and expansions to existing ranges to unveil, as well as our constantly evolving showroom stock.

“The village itself has everything I need. I can do my banking, get my hair cut, buy the basics, treat the wife and eat out, all in Long Buckby.”

Everything you need

Gems Jewellers’ Chrissie Atkins has owned a

business in the village for twelve years.

“There are many benefi ts to shopping in a village; for example, we stock a wider selection and less of the same pieces than larger jewellers – no-one wants to be wearing the same necklace as their neighbours! If anyone wants an item not in stock, we’re happy to order in, and because I run two businesses from the same premises, shop prices can be kept affordable for all budgets.

We also visit elderly customers in their homes, ensuring they receive the same choice and service as our other clientele.

“It surprises people to hear that we offer ear piercing, repairs and alterations and a watch battery and strap replacement service; many assume they’ll have to travel to town for those services.

“In actual fact, Long Buckby has everything needed to sustain life, just on a smaller scale.”

Bringing it home! The Olympic Torch relay comes to Dunchurch...

2nd July: a date for the diary! Excitement and anticipation are in the air in Dunchurch after the announcement on March 19th that the Olympic Torch will come through the village. Local people will be able to get a glance at the Olympic Torch on Monday July 2nd as it makes its way from Coventry via Rugby and then onto Northampton as part of its 70 day relay around the UK.

The Dunchurch leg of the relay is scheduled to start on Rugby Road (where it meets Northampton Lane) at 9.43am and will continue through the centre of the village, ending on Coventry Road opposite the entrance to Don Cerce Close.

Local resident Hayley Burke said of the announcement: “For most people in the area, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. To get this close to the Olympic Torch reallyis momentous and is something we’ll keep

with us for the rest of our lives.”

With its Gunpowder plot connections, Dunchurch holds

a picturesque location for people from the local areas to see this momentous convoy.

Our moment to shineThe pupils of Dunchurch Junior and Infant Schools will be out in force, lining the streets to witness this historic event.

Dunchurch Parish Council are also putting on bacon sandwiches which will be available in the Square (near the library) so come and combine a late breakfast with this truly momentous occasion!
