Advisory ConfusionBy: Maricel Tan

Do you remember the first week of school? Many new, and returning students were greeted by Mr. Win-ters, Ms. Jaramillo, and Mr. Contre-ras. They were giving a warm and joyful welcome to all students, but they, along with the ASB students, were helping all students figure out which room number they were sup-posed to go to pick up their locator cards when the bell rang. They told us to make sure to go to our advi-sory period so the teachers could explain to us more about our sched-ule. Many Vikings just asked their friends to help them figure things out.

Many students were still confused when the bell rang and had to go to class they didn’t know they had to go to. This is when the teachers, ASB students and staff members re-ally helped the students get to the right class.

Da Juan Gines, a 7th grader said, “I was confused but some teach-ers explained where to go.” Jessica Martinez said, “I wasn’t confused because I went to the Counseling

Wednesday or Friday?window and listened to the PA an-nouncements about what to do.” Debora Pureco, a 7th grader said, “No I wasn’t because Ms. Jaramillo helped me.” Chanelle Thomas said, “I wasn’t confused because a friend explained this situation to me.”

Advisory period started, students received their locator cards and 20 minutes later, the bell rang again for first period to officially begin.

Friday of the same week, students were told over the PA system, very clearly, to go to the advisory period listed in the locator cards. Many students were still confused about which advisory period to attend, the one from the first day of school? or the one on their schedules?, and many went to the wrong one.

Considering that they had to go to 2 different classrooms for advisory on the same week, it’s easy to see why many students got confused.

Now there is only one advisory class to go to and less confusion.

We are almost to fall break and now the students are not confused anymore. It might have taken a while to get used to the scheduled but Vikings catch on quick!

How much time do MVM students spend on Facebook?By: Kimberly Piedra

According to Wikipedia.com, 900 million people all over the world use Facebook, and 350 Million people, about more than a third of the users, are addicted to Facebook, claims sickfacebook.com, an anti-Facebook blog.

We decided to find out how many students at Mar Vista Middle use Face-book , and how long they are on it to see if Facebook addiction is a problem for MVM students.

Most students at MVM have a Facebook account. Some students use it re-sponsibly because their parents or guardians check their Facebook accounts, others do not. When on vacation, many students are on Facebook more often than when they’re in school, since they have not much else to do.

“I like everything about Facebook,” says Deana Rankin. “I only get on Facebook when I’m really bored or when there’s nothing else to do,” says Johnny Garcia. “Facebook is annoying because of game requests that some people send you,” claims Gretchel Cesar. “Facebook is cool,” recalls Ale-jandro Montes Maya. “I like the pictures of the cute guys on Facebook,” states Savannah Deonne.

Take a look at the wikihow.com article titled “How to Defeat a Facebook Addiction,” they provide the following signs to show an unhealthy needi-ness for Facebook: Put a checkmark next to the ones that apply to you.____You wake up and the first thing you do is “check Facebook”. And it’s the last thing you do at night.____Nothing else thrills you or you feel “empty” without Facebook. All you want to do is spend time on Facebook, ____When not being on Facebook causes physical pain, sweats, and illness.____You’re not able to go for more than a day without using Facebook. ____Even if you’re not on Facebook constantly (indicating you need a real-ity check), checking it many times during the day is a sign of compulsive behavior. ____Adequate sleep stops being important to you. Instead, you’re prepared to stay up way too late just to be able to accommodate your Facebook needi-ness.

Do you think you’re addicted to Facebook?

I Don’t Wanna Sleep

So, how long do Vikings spend on Facebook? We decided to ask MVM students and only received 23 responses from random students. The graph shows how much time these 23 students spend on Facebook during their breaks.

Kyle Denney andDustin Peralta know exactly where to go to pick up their locator cards.

Aloha Danceby: Faith Lopez The clues are: Posters were put up two weeks before the event,

the price was set at only $2 per person and if you waited till the last minute, your price went up to $3. It was also the first event like this of the year. What am I talking about?Answer: The First Dance of the year, the Aloha Dance, sponsored by Mar Vista Middle School ASB.

Shake Your Groove Thang!

Izaak Sanchez started a new dance craze at the Aloha Dance, he calls it the “Point to the left and jump to the left slide”. Let’s see if it catches on.

Back to School NightBy: Phoebe GarciaLots of people attended back

to school night at Mar Vista Middle for different reasons. Students wanted the wristband for free dress day, and parents came to meet their students’ teachers. Many came to watch the spectacular performances by Choir, and Band both led by Ms. Hall and Orchestra, led by Mr. Caldera, before the class-room visits. The song that the choir per-

formed was “A Man In The Mirror” by Michael Jackson. We heard the soloist Jovelle Ladiero. After his perfor-mance he said, “I didn’t really feel anything because I knew I could do it.” Melanie Vil-lela also from the choir quoted, “When we started singing I

Everyone is Watchingwas nervous and I was think-ing I didn’t mess up.” Sahara Lopez said, “At first like ev-eryone else I was nervous but at the end I felt happy about it.” Also, Julia Martinez stated that, “I felt nervous but happy at the same time.” Rowena Mendieta said, “I was nervous because everyone was watching.” The band performed a few songs from a CD playlist they made, which had spectacular musical sounds. Maybe all the superstar per-

formers will turn into famous celebrities one day. You may also have seen new faces and new classrooms but, students got their free dress day and parents got to meet all of their children’s teachers. Everyone ended up happy at the end.

On Friday August 24th at 1:45pm, the gates opened, the music was blowin, people were dancing and partying, the fun had begun. The lights and confetti were colorful and awesome, and the deco-rations topped it right off. It felt like a luau. The Aloha dance was such a big hit that the music seemed like

it went through the roof. Everyone showed Hawaiian spirit and everyone was dressed in leis. The laser lights and strobe lights put students in a dance trance that lasted till 3:45 when the lights went on and it was time to go home.It seemed like from start to finish, everyone was having a great

time. However, for every group of students that said they had a great time, we found a few that had some suggestions for the next dance. Izaak Sanchez, and David Weiber both want to see more dance battles. Do you have suggestions or ideas for the next dance? Do you have

a theme that you would like the ASB to consider? Write it here and send your vote to the ASB_________________________.See you at the next dance Vikings

Jovelle Ladiero sings his heart out despite being nervous performing in front of over 350 students and parents at Back-To-School Night.

Garret Conder is surpised he is having a good time, and Erika Azhocar wants two more hours of awesome dancing.

ASAP Sports By: Catlyn Castillo

Do you like sports? If you do, the After School Activities Program (ASAP) has many great options for you if you want to play an organized sport. Each team has their own coach, each sport has their own season and each sport has their own practice times so you can find the one that fits your schedule.

Playing Sports is a great way for you to exercise and have fun, Kyle Denney, who plays baseball said “I joined baseball because I wanted to try a new sport and I’ve always wanted to try playing baseball”, Crystal Sanchez from girls soccer said “I love going to soccer because it’s fun and the coach is super nice.”

The ASAP has many sports to choose from, sports like soccer for girls and boys, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, football, and track and field. However, for some students this variety isn’t enough, Juan Carlos Rodriguez and Hassan Gates both said “I think they should have a La Crosse team”, and Deana Rankin said “I think the after school program should have cheerleading.”

If you want to play sports all you have to do is sign up for the after school program and line up for the ASAP sign in line, located near the cafeteria. Once you’re signed up and ready to go to sports, you go to the fields and find the coach for the sport you like, but your sport isn’t always going to be there, sports also have a beginning and ending season.

For example, baseball and softball start in mid September, Soccer season starts from early November until the first week of March, Football is from November through February, while volleyball and track and field are from February to June.

If you want to play in one of MVM’s sports teams, hurry, sign-up for the ASAP program so you too can be of the team. The ASAP office is located in room 907. You can pick up a practice schedule there so you can get started.

Put Me In Coach, I’m Ready To Play

Alberto Ruiz takes the ball from Jaime Rosas close to the net, he shoots, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

Diego Gonzales is thankful for his new MV baseball cap, he can block out the sun and not miss a fly ball.

Gilbert Verdugo warms up during practice. He’s glad the heat wave is over.

One Direction Or Justin Bieber By: Marla Gallegos

One Direction is the New Brit-ish/Irish boy band that is known worldwide not only because of their awesome looks, but because of their great hits. Have they beat the Canadian cutie Justin Bieber? He too is known worldwide be-cause of his looks and songs. In a battle of who is liked the most who would win, Justin Bieber or One Direction?

We conducted a survey asking students and teachers. We inter-viewed 48 girls, 48 boys, and 4 teachers. The girls voted 32 times for One

Direction and 16 times for Justin Bieber.

The boys voted 25 times for Jus-tin Bieber and 23 times for One Di-rection. Frida Aguayo said, “I love their British accents they sound so cute and smart when they talk, I just love them!” Hunter Carr said “ I don’t like any but I dislike One Direction less.” Jenna Tijerina said “Justin Bieber is way cuter than the One Direction guys”.

We also asked four teachers Dr. Espanol liked One Direction, Mrs.

Jaramillo said “Well, I like both I don’t prefer one over another, I would have to vote for both.” Mr. Dotson cheered on Justin Bieber, and Mr. Lopez voted for One Direction.

In the end Justin Bieber ended up with 42 votes total and One Direction ended up with 58 votes. MVM has chosen a winner. The winner is One Direction!

One Direction came in and left Justin Bieber behind, but someone new will eventually come in and leave One Direction behind. In a couple years it could change, Justin Bieber could come back or maybe both will be forgot-ten in the past .

As Long As You Love Me or One Thing?

In the battle between Justin Bieber and One Direction, MVM students voiced their opinions and have made the winner, the most popular group in the country.

The Hunger Games, Book or Movie?By: Miriam Torres

The Hunger Games (Book and Movie) were very big hits across the Globe. But, do people prefer the book over the movie?, or the movie over the book? That is probably a question that many Vikings have thought over, and it has remained unanswered for quite some time... until now.

It’s time that we found out if Vikings prefer the book or movie, so we surveyed over 100 students, and a couple of teachers from Mar Vista Middle School. Some MVM staff and students thought the book was interesting because it had a lot of details, Mr. White

May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor. says, “Personally, I would like the book because it has a lot more detail in it.” America Hernandez says, “ The book is always better than the movie, the movie always leaves out all of the good parts.”

Some Vikings prefered the mov-ie because it has a lot of action. Priscilla Gonzalez says, “ I like the movie because it is thrilling and full of suspense.” Jaila Jor-dan says, “ I like the movie better because it’s awesome, and is full of action.” It’s official, the Mar Vista stu-dents, and teachers, have made up their minds and now, the moment you have all been waiting for... the book, or the movie? The students have chosen, the

votes are in. The students who voted for the book, 18 votes. The students who voted for the movie, 82 votes.

Well there you have it, the stu-dents think the movie is better. I guess the students prefer the ac-tion movie, rather than the book, maybe because they like to SEE the action, instead of reading it. But that’s just their opinion...what would you choose?

Page 5 Entertainment News The Viking Times Fall- 2012

Mr. White says, “Personally, I would like the book because it has a lot more detail in it.” Many students won’t argue with this opinion, but students like to see and experience the characters in the way the movie portrayed them.
