The stars unfold the splendid sky,

All nature bows creation shouts,

Then I believe that God is real.

Chorus:-

Yes I believe that God loves me,

His hand I feel, His ways I see,

From moving tides, cross space so wide,

For I believe that God is real.

Yes I believe that God loves me,

His hand I feel, His ways I see,

From moving tides, cross space so wide,

For I believe that God is real.

A fleeting glance on wings of morn,

His wonders ever to perform,

For I believe that God is real. (C)

The birds that sing God’s creatures call,

From ocean wide His by my side,

And I believe that God is real. (C)

His mighty power but speak thy word,

And I believe that God is real.

Welcome

The Archbishop of Southwark, the Most Revd Peter Smith, welcomes the Holy Father to the Vigil.

Greeting

Pope : In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen

Pope: Peace be with you

All: And also with you

Pope: God of truth and love, your Son, Jesus Christ, stands as the light to all who seek you with a sincere heart. As we strive with your grace to be faithful in word and deed, may we reflect

15

Page 16: The Vigil of Prayer Large Print.doc

the kindly light of Christ and offer a witness of hope and peace to all. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading           Eph 3:14-21

This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father, from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes its name:          Out of his infinite glory, may he give you the power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong, so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith, and then, planted in love and built on love, you will with all the saints have the strength to grasp the breadth and the length, the height and the depth; until, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond all knowledge, you are filled with the utter fullness of God.

16

Page 17: The Vigil of Prayer Large Print.doc

Glory be to him whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine; glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.            This is the word of the Lord

(R) Thanks be to God

Psalm 119: 1-2. 10-11. 145-6    Music Copyright: © Westminster Cathedral

I have sought you with all my heart: let me not stray from your commands. I treasure your promise in my heart lest I sin against you. (R)

I call with all my heart; answer me, O Lord,

17

And I will obey your decrees.I call out to you: save me And I will keep your commands.(R)

Gospel Acclamation© 2002,2004 Christopher Walker, published by OCP Publications Reprinted with permission of Calamus

Choir – “Alleluia, alleluia Alleluia, (x2)

All: Alleluia. I am the light of the world says the Lord.    All who follow me will have the light of life. Alleluia!

Deacon; The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 5:1-12,14-16          Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven.            Blessed are the gentle: they shall have the earth for their inheritance.

18

Page 19: The Vigil of Prayer Large Print.doc

Blessed are those who mourn: they shall be comforted.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them.

Blessed are the pure in heart: they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.”          Deacon: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Thine.Shine through me,and be so in me that every soul I come in contact withmay feel Thy presence in my soul.Let them look up and see no longer mebut only Jesus!Stay with me,and then I shall begin to shineas Thou shinest,so to shine as to be a light to others;the light, O Jesus, will be all from Thee;none of it will be mine;it will be Thou shining on others through me.Let me thus praise Thee in the way Thou dost love bestby shining on those around me.Let me preach Thee without preaching, not by words but by my example,by the catching force of the sympathetic influenceof what I do,the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to Thee.

Hymn_ “Lead Kindly Light”J.H.Newman (1801-1890) Meody C.H. Purdy (1799-1885)

Lead, kindly Light, amid th’encircling gloom,

26

Page 27: The Vigil of Prayer Large Print.doc

lead Thou me on!The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on!Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to seeThe distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on;I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead Thou me on!I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still will lead me on.O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till the night is gone,And with the morn those angel faces smile, which IHave loved long since, and lost awhile!

Meantime, along the narrow rugged path, thyself hast trod,Lead, Saviour, lead me home in childlike faith, home to my God.To rest forever after earthly strifein the calm light of everlasting life.

Between the intercessions a refrain will be sung from the hymn:

"But thanks be to God" G.F. Handel

If God be for us, who can be against us? Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth, who is he thatcondemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is at the right hand of God, who makes intercession for us. (Romans8:31,33-34)
