Preface

St Patrick Parish in Prince Edward County was formed in 1755 from Nottoway Parish (then in Amelia Countybut later and nowin Nottoway County). Nottoway Parish in the lower part of then Amelia County had itselfbeen created out of Raleigh Parish in the same county only four years earlier in 1748. Raleigh Parish andAmelia County had in turn been formed from Bristol Parish and Prince George and Henrico Counties in 1735. Theantecedents of Bristol Parish (1642) are not completely clear. somehave claimed that it derived principallyfrom Henrico Parish, but it is safer to state that Bristol Parish probably derived from such very early plantation parishes as BermudaHundred (in presentnday Dale Parish and Chesterfield County) and Jordan’s (inpresent~day Martin's BrandonParish and Prince George County) and only possibly in part from Henrico Parish.The transition from informal plantation parishes of the earliest days in Virginia to moreformal parishes withproper metes and bounds is usually difficult to trace and the matter is very poorly handled in a publication(1964) sponsored by the Virginia state Library. In despite of this one can say that St Patrick Parish in alllikelihood descends from the plantation parishes of early Charles City that lay along the south side of theRiver James (in the area east of modern Petersburg and Hopewell).

Mostcolonial parishes were formed before their usually coterminous counties. St Patrick Parish was,however, created a year after Prince EdwardCounty. It will also be noted that the colonial vestry—minutesinvariably show"st Patrick Parish" and never "st Patrick’s Parish".

-l- i * ......._

In the 19th century-after the separation of Churchand State-—recordswere less well kept (even althghthere were fewer records to keep) and the parochial system was less well understood. The congregationalpolity of Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, and others was obviously also of someinfluence in the matter.Oneof the results of this general weakeningof the parochial system of ecclesiastical governmentwas thetendency of somechurches to want to becomeseparate congregations within a parish or even separate parishes,simply so that they could better control their owndoings. This is undoubtedly what happened whenWilmerParish was founded in 1866 without any bounds. Nothing else seems to be recorded of the parish until 1880,when Johns Memorial Church was first reported as being in Wilmer Parish.

It so happens that colonial st Patrick Parish has been unreported in Prince EdwardCounty for some timenowsave for its daughter in Farmville. Inasmuchas, in the system of government by parishes, dormant areasare automatically absorbed by other parishes in due course rather than left suspended in limbo, as it were-—aprocedure quite contrary to the principles of Christian care and evangelism--the parish in question is nowknownas st Patrick with Wilmer Parish. .

The somewhatirregular creation of WilmerParish for the area only in and around Farmville did havecolonial precedents though these precedents generally had non~Anglicanassociations, as with the creation ofKing William Parish in 1700 near Manakin (west of Richmond)for the French uguenots and St George’s Parish in1714 around Germanna(between Fredericksburg and Culpeper) for the GermanCalvinists. For the Hnguenots theparish was to cover wherever the Huguenots settled; for th GermanReformedthe boundaries were to extend fivemiles in all directions from Germannaitself. It should also be added that ilmer Parish was, unfortunately,by no means the only boundless parish formed in 19th-century Virginia.

Tere is still another developmentconcerning St Patrick Parish that should not be overlooked. whenAppomattox County was formed in 1844 from parts of Prince Edward, Buckingham, Charlotte, and Campbell Counties,no changes were madein the parish~lines that fell within the newcounty: St Patrick in Prince Edward,Tillotson in Buckingham,Cornwall in Charlotte, and Moorein Campbell. Inasmuch as the only church everreported in the diocesan records since 1844 from AppomattoxCounty was the nowdemolished log church (st Paul's)at Hurtsville and inasmuchas this church was always listed as in St Patrick (or occasionally--through error,igorance, or confusion~—simplyPatrick) Parish, the whole county cameto be considered part of St PatrickParish. Through a misunderstanding of parochial development or the apparent unimportance of the matter at thetime, sometimes the part of the parish that lay within AppomattoxCounty was actually thought to be a separateparish. For all intents and purposes, however, the counties of Prince Edwardand Appomatto are but a singleparish with the parish (mother or principal) church at Farmville and a more recently established church atAppomattoxCourthouse. Indeed, if this interpretation were ever disallowed and the old records and arrangements strictly followed, part of AppomattoxCountywould lie within the Diocese of Sothwestern Virginia! Thismatter of the relationship betweencolonial St Patrick Parish and-Appoattox Countyis also misunderstood andmisinterpreted in the aforementionedpublication of 1964.

In sum, unless and until other arrangements are formally made, colonial St Patrick with post-bellum WilmerParish now embraces two churches (at Farmville and Appomattox Courthouse) and two counties (Prince Edward andAppomattox).

* * *

The colonial Vestry was a combination of parochial Vestry, board of supervisors, overseers of the poor,and county surveyors. Therefore, Vestry records embrace an immenserange of activities both secular andecclesiastical. Furthermore, aside from a few colonial constructional remnants at Sandy River (nowSharonBaptist) Church, which at present is in fact hardly an ante-bellum church muchless a colonial church, theSt Patrick Parish Vestry-book is the only tangible survival of the colonial Established Church in Prince Edwardor AppomattoxCounty. Further still more, in the large area south of the James and west of RichmondandPetersburg only one set of colonial church walls, six colonial Vestry-books (with fragents of another), aregister, and a glebe-house survive. The single church (nowin the possession of another faith) is mutilatedand its walls almost invisible; and only three of the books have been transcribed. Fromall this mayperhapsbe inferred the significance of any transcription of the Vestry-bookof colonial St Patrick Parish.
