The Vanguard Cadets during their final show of the season atSanta Clara University's Buck Shaw Stadium
An "age out" season, for those who have never marched
or never received a green feather, is an interesting one … to
say the very least.
This being my fifth year with SCV, I have been through the
trials and tribulations of tour to the point where sleeping on a
bus is more comforting than a bed, and the food tastes better
when the only seating available is the pavement.
I've been through staff changes and Director changes. I've
gone from being cut from the Baritone line in 1996, to being an
alternate (that made it!) in 1997, to being the Head Drum Major
in 2001. It was an awesome five-year ride that has come to
fruition, and my time is up.
To explain what The Vanguard has given me would turn
this newsletter into a novel, but I will say this: Though I leave
this organization as a member, Santa Clara will always be in
my heart. The roads of America by night, the football fields by
day; marching with the Vanguard- there is no better way. Thanks,Mark Irons1997 - 2001

The "Spirit of Disney" Award recognizes one outstanding
drum corps in each division for its ability to translate imagination
into an education and
fun forum for all
participants, to utilize
new ideas and
techniques, and to
provide great en-
tertainment value for the
audience.
While discipline and strict adherence to guidelines are
essential for a successful drum corps performance, winners of
the "Spirit of Disney" Award demonstrate more. Their
performance also reveals the showmanship, creativity, and
entertainment appeal of imaginative people.
Because the name "Walt Disney" is synonymous with
innovative and creative family entertainment of the highest
quality, the "Spirit of Disney" Award challenges performers to
reflect those standards as they reach for new heights in gaining
a fuller awareness of the entertainment industry.

If I could choose one word to describe what biking across
the country was like, I would choose “empowering.” Each day
was a new adventure and there was no way to know what lay
before me. Some days, the group and I would have the time of
our lives. Other days were exhausting, hot, and in many cases,
the wind blew straight into our faces. One day was so
demoralizing that the only words uttered were shouted
expletives by different individuals at strong gusts of wind that
swept through the plains and pushed us around on our bikes.
The greatest part of the journey was once again realizing the
potential of the human spirit, something I was reminded of daily
while I was a member of the Corps. Many of the same feelings
of accomplishment passed through my mind.
This summer I faced a few of the greatest challenges of
my life. After pushing myself to the max, I somehow managed
to drag myself to the computer everyday to write about it. Even
with this though, the ride didn’t compare to the emotional highs
and lows, and sense of mission I experienced while being a
member of the Santa Clara
Vanguard. The sense of
family wasn’t there, and the
interactions between cyclists
were void of the care and
love I was used to. Seeing
the Corps for the first time in
Buffalo was a coming home
for me. I raced out of the
stadium after retreat to hear
Clowns and made it just in time. I watched the faces of the
members as I recalled my summer and I couldn’t hold the tears
back. There is nothing quite like being a member of the Santa
Clara Vanguard. I was proud to be a part of helping a few
members experience it for themselves.
Congratulations to the 2001 Santa Clara Vanguard, I salute
you! Never forget!

Hello SCV Fans,
Just want to take the time to say thank-you to all who
stopped by the souvie booth this year to either buy a t-shirt or
your favorite trinket, or just to say hello and whisper some
encouraging words.
All in all we had a great tour, saw some old friends and
met some new ones... Wish to thank all the folks from the kids
on up that helped with any little thing. And to the Corps, you
make our job so easy by doing such awesome shows night
after night. We are the lucky ones who got to hear all the
positive comments from the fans!!!
We will be selling at both Banquets so you have yet another
chance to buy those great Summer items....
Thanks again,

Now that the fleet is back on the lot, and all the members
are home safely, we can consider the 2001 season almost over.
After the awards banquets and the reflections of the past season
complete, we will start focusing totally on the 2002 anniversary
year.
Expectations are high towards the coming year. The Alumni
is planning on another anniversary year corps, which should
surpass 1997’s accomplishment. The Cadets expectation is to
again attend DCI Finals in Madison. The Booster Club is
anticipating activities to celebrate another milestone for the
Vanguard family.
With our organizations goals of safety, excellence, financial
stability, and growth guiding us, we can look forward to the
continuing ability to field top performing groups. We will again
meet our budget targets for this year, exceeding as planned in
the revenue area, allowing us to both invest in our long range
goals, and support the programs with needed capital
expenditures.
When we experience major problems such as we did this
summer with SCV1, we have the resources to tackle them and
move forward. We expend a lot of time and money into insuring
the safety and reliability of our fleet. It is a liability we take
seriously and as a result, can take pride in both the visual
presence we have moving down the nations highways and
knowing that our members are safe.
Congratulations go out to the Vanguard for their Spirit of
Disney award and to Mark Irons for being awarded the Jim
Jones Leadership Award, both being presented at DCI Finals.

As your Booster Club President, I would like to welcome
you to Santa Clara Vanguard's 35th performing year.
Membership in our organization this year will provide an
opportunity for you to participate at different levels within the
organization. However you choose to participate, the key is
"participation". We have many needs within the booster club.
Once the season begins, each corps member attends a
monthly camp. This is a great time for you to visit and help out
at the camp. We need folks to help cook and serve the kids.
This is a great opportunity to meet the other corps members
with whom your son or daughter will spend hours with
throughout the season. You will find this level of volunteerism
to be very rewarding and fun.
As a team you and your child will be obligated to work a
certain number of bingo games this year. These are also fun
and rather easy to do. Charlotte and Dave Luciani are great
bingo leaders in the organization and they will help you learn
the process quickly. It's a good idea to sign up early for this
with Maya Bonte-Salvucci, our Volunteer Coordinator, by calling
1-888-640-1086. There will be more information about the bingo
responsibilities with your child's membership information.

We also conduct monthly meetings for the booster
members. Meetings are scheduled quarterly on Saturday
mornings and other months in the evening on the first
Wednesday meeting after the first Monday Board meeting. We
have great committees that work on events such as Pacific
Procession, our annual drum corps show. We also host a
Division II and III show profiling smaller corps throughout
California.
Our Souvenir Coordinator, Jo Blatcher, always appreciates
volunteers to help her with new stock and sales throughout
the year. Our Bingo Committee, lead by parent volunteers, need
assistance meeting with corps members to help them
understand their bingo timelines and obligations. This is usually
done at camps. If you are handy with the computer, our
Membership Committee, chaired by Mary Minjares, can use
your help entering membership data or sharing new ideas about
membership recruitment. See the listing of the chairpersons in
this Vanguardian newsletter.
These are a few of the many activities you can help with
throughout the marching season. It's the best way to say to
your child, I care about you and what you are doing! As a parent,
you will find this to be one of the most exciting youth activities
and this thirty-fifth year promises to be exceptional. Along with
the other Booster Club officers, I look forward to meeting you
and welcoming you to the Santa Clara Vanguard 2002!

Another year, another class of age-outs, another great
summer, and another great edition of the Santa Clara Vanguard!
It was an amazing finish to an amazing year. The performance
on Saturday night was spectacular. Congrats to the SCV
members, staff, and support staff!
Also, congratulations to the 2001 Champions: Cavaliers
(Div. I), Mandarins (Div. II), and the Blue Stars (Div. III). I would
also like to congratulate our members who participated in the
Individual and Ensemble competitions. Your performances were
outstanding.
And we can’t forget the two special awards and recognitions
we received in Buffalo! Congrats to the Corps, the recipient of
the Disney award, and Mark Irons for receiving the DCI Drum
Major award.
There are so many highlights and memories from the year.
We were lucky enough to be visited by some of the legends in
the music world. The composer of our second tune – “Jug Blues
and Fat Pickin’” Don Freund, traveled to Charlotte, NC, to see
the show and talk to the Corps. It was great to see him so
thrilled with what we were doing with his piece of music. Of
course, no one will ever forget the visit we had from the
legendary Dr. Frederick Fennell. The look on his face as he
enjoyed listening and viewing the Corps was priceless, as were
the words of wisdom he bestowed upon us. It was a truly
amazing night. We also had visits from internationally renown
percussionist and
studio musician, Steve
Houghton, and Sam
Palafian, famous tuba
player and one of the
pioneers of the renown
Empire Brass, known
as one of the nation's
best brass quintets.
The Corps is so
lucky to have been able
to share these and
other great memories
with our support staff.
The people who feed us, drive us, clothe us, and generally
look after all of us! I can’t say thank you enough to those of you
who were a part of our support staff team. On behalf of the
members, the instructional staff, and myself, thank you so much
for everything you did for SCV! The same applies to the
instructional staff and the office staff – thank you for all of your
help!
But the biggest thank you must go to the marching members
– as they have become what the Vanguard is all about. Keeping
up with our traditions and, at the same time, creating new ones
for the future. Your intelligence, intensity, dedication,
commitment and caring, has not gone unnoticed. And, of
course, your performances will forever be remembered! I can’t
say enough about how proud I am of each and every one of
you. Thank you!
I said something to this effect last year but this year, I’ll let
the legendary Dr. Fennell state it for me: “Take what you’ve
learned here, and teach it to someone else.” I hope the age-
outs stay involved with the organization – join the Alumni
Association and the Booster Club to help shape the future of
SCV.
For those of you marching members who are young enough
and able enough, I hope you all return for the 2002 season. I
know you come from near and far, some of you are living on
your own, some have a very busy schedule, but I hope you’re
all able to be a part of SCV again. Don’t forget – for those
returning, you’ll need to make sure you finish your financial
and bingo requirements for 2001 before auditions.

Another drum corps season of wonderful and exciting
moments has come to a close. I am very proud of everyone
who was a part of the Vanguard Cadets season. I am especially
proud of the drive and desire of the corps members and
instructional staff who continuously developed and refined this
year’s show. It was also very impressive that the corps
members, parents and boosters worked together to meet our
financial milestones, along with fulfilling corps member bingo
obligations.
There were a lot of great moments and memories that were
shared throughout the season and I would like to share some
of them with you:
Cultural Concert at the historic Agnews Auditorium; two
performances in one morning (Santa Clara Open House and
Mountain View Parade); another performance at the historic
Agnews Auditorium; Pacific Procession our first show; weather
in the Northwest; Husky Stadium in Seattle, Washington (this
is Astroturf, it feels almost like grass); strawberry shortcake in
the forest after the show in Woodburn, Oregon; pancake
breakfast at the Redwood City Firemen’s House (was that the
state governor speeding by in Redwood City when we were
waiting to leave after the parade?); Magic Mountain (the Goliath
roller coaster was great); the roach motel; housing at the show
site in Southern California; all corps barbecue
after San Diego show; a successful last Div II/III
season show in Santa Clara; the best show performance at
the last show of the season; an encore performance for our
home crowd.
This year’s success could not have been possible without
our many parents, alumni and boosters support. We can all
share in the success as everyone who pitched in to sew, cook,
clean, pack, work bingos, manage bingos, run the booster
office, paint, drive, fix things, prepare the fleet, etc., helped to
create an environment that allowed the corps members to focus
on their show development and performance. It is through the
collective work of the corps members and supporters that the
competitive season was a success. Thank you to everyone!
As you can imagine with all of the fun and travel during the
season, there are a lot of expenses that must be paid. Our
main source of funding to pay these expenses is bingo. We
need anyone and everyone who is 18 years or older to come
work a bingo or two to help pay for these expenses. Please
sign up to work bingo on any Tuesday, Friday and Saturday
evenings or Sunday afternoons. If you are done with your bingo
commitment, you could start working your bingo commitment
for next season now.
I would also like to congratulate the Vanguard staff and
corps members on a great season. Their performances
during championship week were wonderful and one of the

Championship week in Buffalo (Orchard Park) proved to
be an action-packed week including a couple of guest
appearances at the Vanguard rehearsal site by nationally-
recognized music industry professionals and many, many local
area SCV fans. SCV Boosters participated in a lunch at the
historic Roycroft Inn in East Aurora that included welcoming
remarks by Mayor Pagliaccio. A docent tour of the inn was
held after the lunch. Remarkably, the area is also known for
toys, home of the Fischer-Price Corporation and Arabian horse
farms and polo fields. A very diverse area with much historical
reference including a good number of drum corps, most of
which are now extinct.
In addition to several nights of great performances, the
corps, staff, parents and fans celebrated after Saturday's show
with a late night dinner back at the Orchard Park High School.
The cook staff, with a very "disco-like” Miss Amana, prepared
a great dinner for over 250 persons! What a great way to cap
a very successful season! Thanks for all the hard work by the
cook crew!
I would be remiss if we did not pass on our special thanks
to the drivers and support staff for making this one of the most
hassle-free SCV tours ever. A special thank you is also in order
to Aldo, our patron saint of buses. Your generosity and
thoughtfulness paid off in more ways than we can possibly
express and for that, we are truly grateful.

As the book closes on the 2001 season and work begins
for 2002, I urge the parents, boosters and alumni to actively
participate in the upcoming season as we prepare for
Vanguard's 35th Anniversary. Plan to attend an upcoming
booster club meeting and learn more about the Santa Clara
Vanguard and how you can get involved. I'll close with a little
tip for those of you planning on attending the next year's DCI
Championships in Madison, Wisconsin; book your rooms well
in advance. If you are a Vanguard fan, you will not want to miss
any of the special appearances by Vanguard, The Vanguard
Cadets or the Alumni Corps this coming season.

My greatest joy as Drum Major is that I am able to see the
change from each corps member as they grow throughout the
season. This year was no exception. From a recent eighth
grade graduate to our four age-outs, everyone grew and
matured. There was a sense of togetherness and camaraderie,
the kind you can’t get anywhere else but in corps.
We faced many interesting challenges, and I have to admit
that I enjoyed the game. At the beginning of the season, our
drumline caption head set a 24-piece battery and a 10-person
pit while the hornline had about two rookies for every returning
member. Although we faced musical balancing issues all
summer, we pulled it off. This was where the change and
maturing of the group really came into play. I remember talking
to some of the hornline members in May and all they could talk
about was how it would be impossible to play over the drumline.
Well, for those who were able to attend the Santa Clara show
on the 22nd of July, you know that the hornline could be heard
loud and clear. Congratulations, members of the hornline and
staff, you did an excellent job of stepping up to the plate and
hitting a grand slam.
The drumline also did a great job of stepping up to the
plate. The hardships of marching a 10-person snareline are
numerous, and they did it. After repeatedly being told to "listen
to the center," the line pulled together and became, to put it
simply, fantastic. The bass, tenor, and cymbal lines were great;
they always knew their stuff, and helped the corps stay intact
Reflections On A SeasonKelly Johnson, 2001 Vanguard Cadets Drum Major
in times of musical tears. As the conductor, I know that a great
drumline is not only essential, but comforting. Drumline, your
strength and togetherness helped to bring the corps to a higher
level. Great job!
Still, no matter how well the drill is performed and the music
is played, we all know that a drum corps show is nothing without
the colorguard. This year, we had two new colorguard
instructors, Diane Corbett, and Tyree Leslie. They did a great
job and were a pleasure to work with. The guard looked great
and the attitude of the whole group was overwhelmingly positive.
One of the challenges that the guard faces is to convey, through
their expressions and movements, the story of the show. It takes
a mature member to communicate effectively, and this year’s
guard did a fantastic job.
One more group of people that should be acknowledged is
our support staff. They wake up before the corps, spend the
day taking care of us all, and then get to bed after lights out so
that they can wake up and do it all over again. Thanks for
everything … you were all great!
Overall, the season was awesome! The staff was great,
and the members responded well to their teachings. I am proud
to say that the Cadet Corps upheld the Santa Clara traditions.
Great job to all of you who helped us out and all of you who
were fortunate enough to wear the uniform. It was a great
year, and it will only be followed by more success stories.
